Isn’t it tragic to see someone with so much talent and potential throw it all away? If Chris trained as hard as his competitors he easily could have done a quad and have been world and possibly Olympic champion. All the elements of a great skater were there, but his demons interfered. I miss his skating so much.
These worlds were held at my Home club…..my mom and I worked back stage and were in Heaven getting to see all these incredible skaters just standing a few feet away.
5:42 -- Interesting to see Lloyd Eisler. Fun trivia : The last rink where Chris Bowman coached before he passed away in 2008 was at Panorama City ice rink -- called Valley Ice Center today -- and where Canadian Lloyd Eisler would become general manager in 2010.
I agree that it must have been difficult to work with such a loose cannon as Christopher Bowman, but I'll bet you any money that working with Frank Carroll was no dance party either...
Like Frank insinuated, it really looked like Chris ditched his choreography between his jumps and pieced parts together. Lots of random arm movements. Chris, himself, said that he was “so lost” admitting that he was winging his choreography. Despite that, he was able to pull of 5.8s for artistic with his charm and charisma. Such a naturally talented though undisciplined skater. His jumps are fantastic - great spring and nice open and confident landing position. Really tragic how things fell apart for him in his personal life which influenced his skating. RIP.

Christopher Bowman was a amazing skater, natural raw talent, just had a great way of connecting with a audience! Franks program and music was a beautiful fit for Christopher to skate to, one of my favorite performances of Christopher's! One slight miss step but he delivered the rest of that program beautifully! Seen a interview with Frank and he said Christopher was the best skater he has ever seen, he trained him from 4 1/2 years of age, for 18 years! Also said Christopher could not show up for a week or two, didn't know where Christopher was but could get on the ice, in front of a audience and just push this button inside and deliver! He could just be lost and show up and make it happen! He also said what a waste it was to the world what happened to Christopher, he had everything going for him, said not only was he a great skater but was funny and witty, he had a wonderful sense of humor and was so charming, he said Christopher could charm the skin off a snake! But the experience training him was painfully because Christopher was all these wonderful things but he had a drug problem and there's nothing you can do till they want to get clean! He said it wasn't his place to out him about his drug problem! He said he brought him cloths in rehab, he got chocked up talking about him! Said he'd never train someone on drugs again, he said what happened to Christopher was death and he had another boy he trained who had a drug problem but said he was ok! He said it was just to painful! See all this potential and then there gone because of drugs! But it must of been hard on both of them, I'am sure there was love and respect for each other but in the end addiction can kill you and you can't love someone better or make them! I choose to remember Christopher Bowman, as the great showman and artist that he was! I wish he could've won against his addiction! I hope he has found peace in his after life! He brought alot of joy to the skating world when he performed! RIP, missed but not forgotten!
Wow! Thank you for this synopsis of the interview with Frank. Frank clearly did care very much for Chris. Chris had it all and I hated to see his wasted potential. I also didn’t like the way his death was announced at nationals. His passing was barely given a 30 seconds blip and then nothing else was said.

My wife's watching figure skating, and I suddenly remembered a skater who once had impressed me but couldn't remember his name. I entered American male figure skater, athletic, handsome, flashy, bronze medal, announcer, short life - and after 5 search engines and 30 minutes I found the name and recognized it. this is a bonus--to see him skating on youtube. (I only wish I could find the tiniest amount of video of my favorite tenor saxophonist, the ever soulful and melodic Hank Mobley). [Johnny Weir just said "The skating world so small." Not judging from the time it to me to uncover C.B.
caponsacchi Look up his skate early in his career to "Maria". Superb. His Mom started taking him to acting "cattle calls" at age 5 for commercials. He was told to call attention to himself to get the job. This had to have affected him later. He was amazing. Made some sad, bad, choices but he still was the best. Kira

He then pretty much improvised the entire program and relied on his charisma and raw talent to salvage a bronze. This was also the breaking point in Chris' relationship with Frank, as they parted ways not long after Worlds ended.
I think Frank Carol stop coaching him after this you could tell he was not happy at all with him for rearranging the program. Frank is known to be bitchy. Once they parted ways from what I’m told, they never spoke again, if I’m not mistaken.
Frank said that Evan Lysacek wasn’t the most talented skater but he had an incredible work ethic and Frank believes that work ethic got him gold. Talent or not , you have to put every ounce of commitment into it.

Yes, Toller coached Chris for one year. Then Chris' off-ice antics took over again, and they parted ways around late 1991. Chris then moved back to So-Cal to finish off the 1991-1992 Olympic season with John Nicks.
Christopher Bowman is the male version of Sasha Cohen. So much raw talent ruined by ego and lack of discipline. Both could easily have been two of the greatest skaters to ever take the ice. They had moments of brilliance on the ice that are practically peerless and yet, neither could ever put two clean programs together. During their respective eras, nobody could touch them but they got in their own way by not trusting those around them that knew better. They were their own biggest competitors, and they lost because of hubris in the end.
Hmm. Interesting comment--I see him as the male version of Nicole Bobek. Sasha was *extremely* disciplined, MUCH more so than either Chris or Nicole. Sasha's problem was nerves, not discipline. Both Chris and Nicole were almost *too* naturally talented--they didn't have to work for it so much, so they took it for granted. And both were natural performers, naturally charming.
What are you talking about? Sasha’s problem was nerves and insecurity, not ego. I believe she went through several sports psychologists trying to combat the mental aspect of the sport.
Rick Mileske I don’t think so he went through a lot of coaches and wasn’t disciplined. He was an amazing artist but I’m sure it was frustrating coaching someone who struggled with addiction.
