- Salt Lake City, Utah, USA - 1990 United States Figure Skating Championships, Men's Free Skate - Paul Wylie won the Free Skate, earning four 6.0s for Presentation. However, he would finish in 2nd Place overall as Todd Eldredge (who was in 1st Place going into the Free Skate) placed 2nd in the Free Skate. He’s just head and shoulders above so many other skaters. His musicality and line are so beautiful. The music he chose was so inspiring.
Paul’s skating was so exquisite that the back crossovers during “The Mission” portion of this performance become important and meaningful when usually such simple moves are forgotten. Had Paul been consistent during his career, he would have been an Olympic gold medalist (actually should have been in 1992 instead of Petrenko who had a dreadful, error-filled program while Paul’s was mostly clean and skated with such beauty). One of the loveliest skaters ever.
He always picked beautiful music
Still the best!!!! 💗 Paul!
I just feel so lucky to have been born and witness such amazing skating!
Paul is amazing..he must never have wasyed a single minute of his life...Wold class skater, Harvard Graduate, Law School Graduate...How does he do it? That was an amazing performance..breathtaking.
Wonderful comments I agree with all of them.
His coaches said we always knew that he was a wonderful skater we just wanted the whole world to know.
We all know know even to this day how much he is loved and respected.
Its nice to know how much joy someone can bring and how happy he makes all of us.
Have a wonderful life Paul and your family.
Huge fan was always my favorite.
Not many skaters have the "presence" to skate to the type of music he chose. He had it.
Timeless!!!!
Paul, terrific outstanding, phenominal job
Well done. Hugs
Such an awesome, and memorable skate. He truly had a style all his own despite comparisons to John Curry. He should have won this competition. Not sure how he lost to Eldridge’ lackluster performance unless Paul finished poorly in the compulsory figures.
Yes, that’s what happened.
They don't skate like this anymore!
just here to see paul wylie land a clean triple sal 😉it is quite a rare occurrence, same as kristi yamaguchi
i can not believe he didn't win (and i'm not that big of a fan of his).....that says a lot!! Todd should NOT have won!!
the fact that Dick Button was just about to jump for joy at the end, makes this a very special moment....
Dedra Kaye DeHart such a lovely comment
God he’s amazing. I could watch him all day long.
Deborah Hoffman me 2
Such a beautiful skater, my god. I often think he should have been a dancer, the way he moves so far outside of his frame and how musical he is. He’s a joy to watch, was so happy to see him put it all together in Albertville.
DM Wilcox he reminds me a great deal of the great John Curry
@@elainesnow326 Oh, yes. For awhile when he was a junior skater, Paul's coach was Carlo Fassi, who trained John Curry. Seeing Curry greatly influenced Paul, he has said. I believe he worked directly with Curry some. Robin Cousins, another Fassi student and great artistic skater, lived with the Wylie family while training for the 1980 Olympics.
Curry was the skater most responsible for me falling in love with the sport. Wylie is my all-time favorite.
One of the "best" mens artistic skaters that I have ever seen, a memorable skating program, so glad I was able to see it again, a real thrill !
CONTINUALLY. one of the very best skaters to ever represent the USA!
Without figures, Paul would have been US champion.
According to Misha Petkevich (and I agree), Paul has had a great classical style.
What a beautiful skater and beautiful man.
Agreed!
Yes indeed!
