Speaking from experience: this piece is really a test of dexterity and endurance, and I can tell you that this piece is NOT easy! Yuja Wang made this piece sound so easy, but it’s so hard to get the notes nice and crisp (especially the 3rd movement). But, once you can get it up to speed, it becomes really fun!

For the confusion around 2:37, the orchestra is a bit late that’s why the conductor reacts and yuja want look at him à this moment

I forgot how lively and energetic this Mendelsohn concerto is! And this particular performance is legendary! Exceptionally well-synced (and that's why they were both killing it, like you said). And, of course, those S-Tiered hands of Ms Wang are just (for lack of a better word) perfect! Thanks for popping up on my algos. You certainly know how to pick 'em! (That yell from the audience during the first movement also caught my attention - apparently it was like a 'bravo' of sorts but not in the usual Italian). Will catch up.... CHEERS!

Was really hoping you would react to Mendelssohn's PC's since I've never listened to them, and was kind of hoping to listen to them here, and this was REALLY nice. Energetic, swift and sweet, interesting and creative writing, really enjoyed it. I heard that this piece used to be very played in the 19th century but for some reason is not that much played nowadays....I say bring it BACK

I played this piece. It's like playing an exercise in a fun way. And yes, Mendelssohn is known for is great melodies.

The comment Gidi made about the orchestra "everybody gets their spot light" is especially true as a reflection of what a wonderful and sensible chamber musician Yuja is, even if it was a piano concerto with an orchestra. She never overpowers other player's part even when she is the star soloist. Listen to her Rach 2 or Rach 3, especially the passages where piano is the filigrees and you will see how she defers to the orchestra.

Mendelssohn gets overlooked so often, perhaps because he doesn't really fit into one of the classic "drawers" so to say. Dunno how to put it, but for me he doesn't quite fit into either romantic or classical (rather romantic), he seems kind of a tweener, just like late Beethoven for example. Nevertheless he has some really good pieces. Personally I'm not too into it, but now and then I listen to it and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Just a "good vibes" piece.

the orchestra's behind Yuja's beat in the first movement...can't watch anymore!

IMO the best concertos are true partnerships between the soloist and the orchestra -- not just show-off pieces for the soloist, but building something bigger by making full use of the contrast in sound between the solo instrument and the orchestra.

Hey Gidi, i don't know if you already reacted to Franz Schubert, but i recommend reacting to his "Wanderer-Fantasie". It's a solo piano piece (fantasy) that's about 20 minutes long but takes you on a journey with a lot of emotions.

My favorite performance of Mendelssohn's piano concertos Nos 1 & 2 is that of Lubov Timofeyeva (cond. Veronica Dudarova)

The main theme of the Finale is like some fragment from French operetta. Pure joy.

if you want you should check out shostakovich 7th symphony. Its about the battle of Stalingrad in WW2. It's the greatest and most horrifying depiction of war in music. My favourite intepretation is by Klaus Mäkelä and the hr symphony orchestra

This is the exact concert where Maestro Masur started to sing along with the orchestra, which made it a "classical music fails" clip.
