Not sure how much Shostakovich you have listened too, but you are wasting time on this symphony. It's a hack work. Listen to his best ones - 4, 8, 10 plus the two vocal "Symphonies", 13 and 14. These are among the greatest classical works ever composed. 🙂

Glad to see a revisit. This is a very nerdy audiophile thing but it pains me a little to see you put your hands on the outer cups of you headphones, they are open backs, designed ideally to be heard without anything obscuring the ear cups. Putting your hands on it would mess up the sound signature bc they are suppose to be "open" where sound can be projected mostly free on both side of the drivers. I know your are just enjoying the moment and I don't want to ruin the fun so you do you. Just a FYI😄Great video, cheers.

Valentina has a number of videos on UA-cam,, of which this is one of the most popular. Another video I could suggest is her playing of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2.The song is divided into two parts, each of about 5 minutes duration. The first half is rather slow paced and ponderous, but the second half is memorable for her skills at the keyboard. Usually when I watch it, I just move to the 4:50 point, and at 5 minutes, just hold on to your hat. Valentina Lisitsa is widely regarded as the greatest living classical pianist, and has several hundred thousands of subscribers on UA-cam.

"The 22-year-old composer-pianist won the Anton Rubinstein Prize for pianistic accomplishments in an 18 May 1914 performance of the work before the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He had proposed his own concerto for the programme, reasoning that, though he may not be able to win with a classical concerto, with his own concerto the jury would be “unable to judge whether he was playing well or not.” Competition rules required that the piece be published, so Prokofiev found a publisher willing to produce 20 copies in time for the event. The jury headed by Alexander Glazunov awarded Prokofiev the prize rather reluctantly." - Wiki

This kind of piece is part of the "impressionist" movement that took place during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. There are several "water games", the most well-known being this one and Debussy's. But the very first one, the one that inspired all the others is a piece by Liszt called "Les jeux d'eaux à la villa d'Este". Definitely worth a listen.

The "Bolero" is the first minimalist piece decades before Minimalism existed. It's not Ravel's best piece but it's hypnotic and awesome. And no-one can say the melody is not beautiful. Besides it's a march and a march is a repetitive music.

Bernstein's Mahler has 0 transperency. It's always just a soup of sound because bernstein put his own emotions towards the piece much higher above the composers intend. Listen to the second movement. Not much dynamics, you can't hear specific voices that have a bit more important parts than others etc.. it just destroys this complex art of mahlers composing. And he just rewrites stuff as he likes it which annoys me so much. Listen to Bernad Haitink and Jonathan Notts Mahler Symphonies and you will hear what i mean.
