Malone also had a big impact on Hakeem. They used to play pickup during the summer when Hakeem was at University of Houston. You can see that Hakeem learned a lot from him. Hakeem was a more athletic type player, but he brought a similar relentlessness and competiveness to the game.

Watched Moses b4 he came to Houston. Been a Rockets fan since 72. Witnessed him when he played for us. Dude was beast. Hated when he was traded yet understood business dealings. He was tenacious. He continued to have Houston connection’s until his transition. Met him directly

My only arguments against would be he wasnt as prolific a scorer for as many years as shaq and he wasn't the rim protector that shaq was. Also you really cant discount the effect of all the non shooting fouls shaq drew during his career. Shaq also shot a much higher percentage and was a great facilitator in the half court. Moses was a dominant rebounder but really thats the only statistical advantage over shaq. Maybe you can say he is a better overall player, that would be completely subjective to argue though. But I don't think you can overstate just how big an impact shaq had on every game.

I'm so glad I grew up in that era I was a Jr in high school when he sign with the sixers what a team Doc Moe cheeks and downtown Andrew Toney in 83 what a perfect team. Moses would get 30 and 30 alot in those days. I love this game!

When Kareem was in Milwaukee he used to bust Moses ass it's only after the 70's was over and Kareem was old is when Moses started playing better against Kareem. Kareem was the only center Moses couldn't fu** with.

Moses is one of my favorite centers. It looked like he played volleyball and no one else could touch the ball. His three point shooting was one of the greatest for a big man.
That Sixer team that crushed the Showtime Lakers in the '83 Finals was really, really good. They had Moses on the inside, crushing, rebounding, dominating. Doctor could score, of course. Toney could shoot. Cheeks was quick on the break, good with distribution and shooting, Jones was great defensively and did a lot of little things well. But most importantly, they just meshed as a unit: the whole was even greater than the parts. Sort of forgotten in NBA history.
Sure the 83 sixers swept the lakers in the finals that year the lakers could have made it interesting if james worthy hadden broken his knee before the post season. But philly was on a mission and was strong the entire season and earned the championship.
The reason why the 83 sixers was forgotten is because they didnt repeat as champions like the pistons did in 89 90 .yeah the sixers ran into a rejuvenated Michael ray Richardson as the the new jersey nets shocked the sixers what a show he put on in that series cheeks and toney had no answer for Richardson .

Moses was a great rebounder a great offensive weapon good at the foul line excellent defensive player he just never had the talent around him until he got together with the sixers and Dr Jay. Moses Malone beat Kareem head-to-head when they were both at their peaks. Repeatedly. Moses Malone carried two otherwise bad Houston teams to heavily contested Finals. Moses was the king of offensive rebounds (since the Wilt, Russell, and Thurman era). Offensive rebounds are one of the most under-appreciated stats in the game. He was a superb player, and if Kareem is a definite GOAT candidate and a top center of all time, Moses most definitely deserves to be included in any GOAT conversation and deserves to be considered one of the top 5 centers of all time. He had an excellent touch with the ball around the hoop. Bill Walton is completely wrong; Moses had a ton of skill, which allowed him to occasionally go coast-to-coast with the ball. That one-handed bank shot he made from an obtuse angle in the clip in this video is a shot he made many times. His abilities on defense relied on a combination of strength and skill rather than athleticism. And as for that comment about Moses being the "missing piece" in Philly - he was the primary piece on that team. He is the central reason that team won the championship. Dr J was great, but he was definitely past his prime at that point. Moses made that championship happen, and with him added to an already very good Philly team, the '83 76ers were easily one of the best teams of all time, if not the best. Moses didn't get many or even really pursue dramatic dunks. He simply put the ball in the hoop efficiently. And when his teammates missed, he was there to give them a great chance for another scoring opportunity. And because of his excellent ability to position himself in the paint, he drew a lot of fouls. This softened opposing defenses, allowing for more efficient scoring for him and his teammates. Moses was fouled a ton right after getting an offensive board because he was so great at quick putbacks. He was a consummate big man, doing exactly what a team-oriented big man needed to do to make his team better. He couldn't necessarily stop a taller center if they got the ball over their heads near the hoop, but if they got the ball within reach of Malone there was a great chance he'd slap it away with quick hands or tie them up. And, when he blocked shots he seemed to have a knack for doing it in such a way that his team got possession of the ball afterwards. Moses Malone was one of the greatest players of all time and helped usher in the greatest decade of basketball thus far. He was sound fundamentally, developed a very high level of skill, and worked as hard as any other player ever. He, like Larry Bird, was a model young players should look to in order to set a peak standard for themselves to aspire to. Unlike many other all time greats, Moses wasn't great because he did things almost no one else could do. Moses Malone was great because he did the things almost anyone can do, better than everyone else.
Malone came from an Era when they played like football players under the basket. The playoffs were different the calls were differenthe is underrated like an unsung hero.

I’ve always felt Moses was so great that I have him at #12 on the top players list. He could be higher. As a 3X MVP and the greatest offensive rebounder ever, at his prime he averaged 30 ppg, 15 rpg. He is so underrated. Talent wise though, I would rather have Moses rather than Kareem or Shaq. Moses taught young Olajuwon how to play better inside.
His reputation to many is a bull in a China closet that just out worked everyone else, I see a lot more subtlety to his game. I am amazed by how smart and crafty he was, a pure genius out there.
Moses was very underrated. People forget that during early 80s he was considered the top player in the league. I recall after they won in 1982-1983 season, they were expected to clash with the Celtics in playoffs. But they got upset by the Nets. Although they were very good team for few years after they won the title, they had short window. Partially because Doc was getting older and Bird and Magic had clearly risen as too players in the league. Malone was still very good and productive after the title but he seemed to plateau and he wasn't that old. Barkley gave them a burst in 1984-1985 but Doc was no longer top five player by then.
This was a great video (I don't like the clickbait with Jordan and that quote tho!) but I wanted to learn more about him for a while now, there are some other old guys I want to learn more about. It interesting that the original Moses in the Bible wasn't eloquent either; but they both lead their teams to the Promised Land and they spoke words that foretold victory.
Back in 1983 in college sixers pre season practice at Franklin and Marshall. My buddy and I show up and walk into the gym and sit on the court under the basket. We got to watch them practice. Occasionally grabbing a loose ball and handing it back to DR. J, Moses, Tony and others. We took it for granted but looking back what an experience. No one questioned us being there. Couldn't do that today.
Moses didn't just score and rebound the ball, he owned the paint. No one got an easy board or bucket without knowing that Moses was coming that way and making the "beast" play.
Moses was the one Ewing feared when coming to the east out of college...Moses made it known he'd break Patrick in...I still remember him saying that in the papers in 85

I was a die-hard Lakers fan as a kid. When Philly swept my Lakers in '83, I wasn't even mad. I just wanted us to win ONE game!!! That Philly team I would match against ANY team in Finals history.
I'll never forget having seen him play. It's like he was from another planet. He was just different. Like Tiger Woods, like Wayne Gretzky, or like Babe Ruth, he was a bolt from beyond.
Speaking of Wayne Gretzky, honestly, that guy had an impact beyond any other player in any sport in my mind. I've never been so shocked by someone who was so obviously on another level. Barry Sanders at his very best is about the closest comparison I can think of. It just didn't matter what everyone else was doing - they were going to do their thing and there was no stopping them. Just with Gretzky, it was practically every game.
Definitely one of the most underrated players. He was the best all rounder center for many years. Loved those Sixers teams. From the Doug Collins days through Charles and Iverson.
Everyone always talks about how Isiah was left off of the 1992 Dream Team, but to me, Moses was actually the bigger snub. Hard to compare two different skill sets, but if you check out win shares, Moses was well ahead of Isiah in the years leading up to 1992 (though he did it with non contenders, so he didn't get the publicity). As far as resumes, Isiah had one more ring, but Moses had 3 MVPs, 2 All-Defensive team memberships, and an 8 to 5 edge in All-NBA teams. Isiah had one assist title, Moses had 6 rebounding titles. And Moses didn't rub people the wrong way, he played hard, but clean.

(He dropped off the map the next year). Clearly, he wasn't one of the top 11 players in the NBA. BUT... Neither was Isiah. In each of the four years between Olympics, from 89 to 92, Moses outperformed Isiah in Win Shares. To be fair, there are other metrics that said Isiah was better, but Moses presents the perfect counter-argument to those who, for the past 30 years have been saying Isiah being left off the team was a horrible injustice. (Don't take this as an Isiah hit piece, had there been a Dream Team in '88, Isiah absolutely would have belonged on it.) The truth is, back when it was free, I used Basketball Reference to rank the players by total Win Shares from 89 to 92, and 10 of the 11 Dream Teamers were in the top 11. The lone exception was Larry Bird, but it's understandable that he'd be there, he was Larry Freakin' Bird. IIRC, the missing player was Terry Porter, how's that for a forgotten name from the past? Considering that they didn't have advanced metrics, I'd say the committee did a damn good job.

It seemed right before my eyes I was watching Zeke become a better.player focusing on what the team needed at every moment if they needed defense, rebounding, feeding everybody, making entry passes....scoring only when needed.....Billy Packer substituting for Dick Stockton and Tommy Heinsohn confirmed my observations with this statement, "I have seen Isiah had games where he has had more productive games in points and assists, but I don't know if I have ever seen him have a better LEADERSHIP day." The commentator next to Billy said by 3rd quarter, Isiah had 9 points but an outstanding floor game ( I realize u don't hear that term said hardly at all in today's game)....Late in 4th quarter Billy asks his cohost "Does Isiah have double figures yet-his floor generalship has been outstanding set the pace, get everybody together." They had confirmed my thoughts....What I am going to say here is heavy.....I felt like I watched Zeke enter into this game as a future Hall of Famer, but he transformed into one of the 50 greatest ever in this game right before my eyes.....He played 40m 16pts, 6rbs, 11ass, 5 stls, 1blk, and 1tov,1pf....Steve Colter had 1ass and 4pts in 13m......Walker had 3ass, 7pts shooting 3-11 from field in 33m.......But next game I saw last year completely OVERWHELMED ME! In 1980-1 I was completely fascinated how in the world did a sub .500 team beat the defending champions Lakers besides the mighty Moses.....To say I was shocked is an understatement! Moses took a Philly team that was overmatched in 1980 and 1982 against L.A., and with Moses they crushed everyone his 1st year and swept L.A..The 76ers made a terrible trade when they traded Moses for Jeff Ruland in 1986. Even if Jeff didn't get hurt and lose his career it was still a bad trade.

Sometimes he would come to the city and get a haircut at one of Harvey's 💈 barbershop's . where he would shop and buy jewelry from the Pawn shop I worked it was the 1980's and a real treat. My only arguments against would be he wasnt as prolific a scorer for as many years as shaq and he wasn't the rim protector that shaq was. Also you really cant discount the effect of all the non shooting fouls shaq drew during his career. Shaq also shot a much higher percentage and was a great facilitator in the half court. Moses was a dominant rebounder but really thats the only statistical advantage over shaq. Maybe you can say he is a better overall player, that would be completely subjective to argue though. But I don't think you can overstate just how big an impact shaq had on every game.

That Sixer team that crushed the Showtime Lakers in the '83 Finals was really, really good. They had Moses on the inside, crushing, rebounding, dominating. Doctor could score, of course. Toney could shoot. Cheeks was quick on the break, good with distribution and shooting, Jones was great defensively and did a lot of little things well. But most importantly, they just meshed as a unit: the whole was even greater than the parts. Sort of forgotten in NBA history.

Sure the 83 sixers swept the lakers in the finals that year the lakers could have made it interesting if james worthy hadden broken his knee before the post season. But philly was on a mission and was strong the entire season and earned the championship.
The reason why the 83 sixers was forgotten is because they didnt repeat as champions like the pistons did in 89 90 .yeah the sixers ran into a rejuvenated Michael ray Richardson as the the new jersey nets shocked the sixers what a show he put on in that series cheeks and toney had no answer for Richardson .

Moses was a great rebounder a great offensive weapon good at the foul line excellent defensive player he just never had the talent around him until he got together with the sixers and Dr Jay. Moses Malone beat Kareem head-to-head when they were both at their peaks. Repeatedly. Moses Malone carried two otherwise bad Houston teams to heavily contested Finals. Moses was the king of offensive rebounds (since the Wilt, Russell, and Thurman era). Offensive rebounds are one of the most under-appreciated stats in the game. He was a superb player, and if Kareem is a definite GOAT candidate and a top center of all time, Moses most definitely deserves to be included in any GOAT conversation and deserves to be considered one of the top 5 centers of all time. He had an excellent touch with the ball around the hoop. Bill Walton is completely wrong; Moses had a ton of skill, which allowed him to occasionally go coast-to-coast with the ball. That one-handed bank shot he made from an obtuse angle in the clip in this video is a shot he made many times. His abilities on defense relied on a combination of strength and skill rather than athleticism. And as for that comment about Moses being the "missing piece" in Philly - he was the primary piece on that team. He is the central reason that team won the championship. Dr J was great, but he was definitely past his prime at that point. Moses made that championship happen, and with him added to an already very good Philly team, the '83 76ers were easily one of the best teams of all time, if not the best. Moses didn't get many or even really pursue dramatic dunks. He simply put the ball in the hoop efficiently. And when his teammates missed, he was there to give them a great chance for another scoring opportunity. And because of his excellent ability to position himself in the paint, he drew a lot of fouls. This softened opposing defenses, allowing for more efficient scoring for him and his teammates. Moses was fouled a ton right after getting an offensive board because he was so great at quick putbacks. He was a consummate big man, doing exactly what a team-oriented big man needed to do to make his team better. He couldn't necessarily stop a taller center if they got the ball over their heads near the hoop, but if they got the ball within reach of Malone there was a great chance he'd slap it away with quick hands or tie them up. And, when he blocked shots he seemed to have a knack for doing it in such a way that his team got possession of the ball afterwards.
Moses Malone was one of the greatest players of all time and helped usher in the greatest decade of basketball thus far. He was sound fundamentally, developed a very high level of skill, and worked as hard as any other player ever. He, like Larry Bird, was a model young players should look to in order to set a peak standard for themselves to aspire to. Unlike many other all time greats, Moses wasn't great because he did things almost no one else could do. Moses Malone was great because he did the things almost anyone can do, better than everyone else.

I’ve always felt Moses was so great that I have him at #12 on the top players list. He could be higher. As a 3X MVP and the greatest offensive rebounder ever, at his prime he averaged 30 ppg, 15 rpg. He is so underrated. Talent wise though, I would rather have Moses rather than Kareem or Shaq. Moses taught young Olajuwon how to play better inside.
His reputation to many is a bull in a China closet that just out worked everyone else, I see a lot more subtlety to his game. I am amazed by how smart and crafty he was, a pure genius out there.

Moses was very underrated. People forget that during early 80s he was considered the top player in the league. I recall after they won in 1982-1983 season, they were expected to clash with the Celtics in playoffs. But they got upset by the Nets. Although they were very good team for few years after they won the title, they had short window. Partially because Doc was getting older and Bird and Magic had clearly risen as too players in the league. Malone was still very good and productive after the title but he seemed to plateau and he wasn't that old. Barkley gave them a burst in 1984-1985 but Doc was no longer top five player by then.
The reason the 83 Sixers were so good was because everyone had a role and everyone knew exactly what their role was.

Back in 1983 in college sixers pre season practice at Franklin and Marshall. My buddy and I show up and walk into the gym and sit on the court under the basket. We got to watch them practice. Occasionally grabbing a loose ball and handing it back to DR. J, Moses, Tony and others. We took it for granted but looking back what an experience. No one questioned us being there. Couldn't do that today.

Speaking of Wayne Gretzky, honestly, that guy had an impact beyond any other player in any sport in my mind. I've never been so shocked by someone who was so obviously on another level. Barry Sanders at his very best is about the closest comparison I can think of. It just didn't matter what everyone else was doing - they were going to do their thing and there was no stopping them. Just with Gretzky, it was practically every game.

Everyone always talks about how Isiah was left off of the 1992 Dream Team, but to me, Moses was actually the bigger snub. Hard to compare two different skill sets, but if you check out win shares, Moses was well ahead of Isiah in the years leading up to 1992 (though he did it with non contenders, so he didn't get the publicity). As far as resumes, Isiah had one more ring, but Moses had 3 MVPs, 2 All-Defensive team memberships, and an 8 to 5 edge in All-NBA teams. Isiah had one assist title, Moses had 6 rebounding titles. And Moses didn't rub people the wrong way, he played hard, but clean.

@@brandonmartin7713 You're right, Moses wasn't the player he used to be at that point, but he was still a solid contributor, he was 17th in a 27 team league in rebounds in 91-92. (He dropped off the map the next year). Clearly, he wasn't one of the top 11 players in the NBA. BUT... Neither was Isiah. In each of the four years between Olympics, from 89 to 92, Moses outperformed Isiah in Win Shares. To be fair, there are other metrics that said Isiah was better, but Moses presents the perfect counter-argument to those who, for the past 30 years have been saying Isiah being left off the team was a horrible injustice. (Don't take this as an Isiah hit piece, had there been a Dream Team in '88, Isiah absolutely would have belonged on it.)
The truth is, back when it was free, I used Basketball Reference to rank the players by total Win Shares from 89 to 92, and 10 of the 11 Dream Teamers were in the top 11. The lone exception was Larry Bird, but it's understandable that he'd be there, he was Larry Freakin' Bird. IIRC, the missing player was Terry Porter, how's that for a forgotten name from the past? Considering that they didn't have advanced metrics, I'd say the committee did a damn good job.
@@big8dog887 Thank you for your feedback.....I am going to throw a compassionate curveball at you concerning my concern with win shares based upon two performances that revolutionized my thinking about trickiness of point guards and using win shares to gauge how great they play.....1988 game 5 bullets against Pistons and 1981 game 3 Rockets against Lakers.....I was watching this game 5 game last year all the way to the 3rd and I noticed something Zeke was doing to Darell Walker what Darrell Walker did to him, playing fantastic defense, same on Steve Colter. It seemed right before my eyes I was watching Zeke become a better.player focusing on what the team needed at every moment if they needed defense, rebounding, feeding everybody, making entry passes....scoring only when needed.....Billy Packer substituting for Dick Stockton and Tommy Heinsohn confirmed my observations with this statement, "I have seen Isiah had games where he has had more productive games in points and assists, but I don't know if I have ever seen him have a better LEADERSHIP day." The commentator next to Billy said by 3rd quarter, Isiah had 9 points but an outstanding floor game ( I realize u don't hear that term said hardly at all in today's game)....Late in 4th quarter Billy asks his cohost "Does Isiah have double figures yet-his floor generalship has been outstanding set the pace, get everybody together." They had confirmed my thoughts....What I am going to say here is heavy.....I felt like I watched Zeke enter into this game as a future Hall of Famer, but he transformed into one of the 50 greatest ever in this game right before my eyes.....He played 40m 16pts, 6rbs, 11ass, 5 stls, 1blk, and 1tov,1pf....Steve Colter had 1ass and 4pts in 13m......Walker had 3ass, 7pts shooting 3-11 from field in 33m.......But next game I saw last year completely OVERWHELMED ME! In 1980-1 I was completely fascinated how in the world did a sub .500 team beat the defending champions Lakers besides the mighty Moses.....To say I was shocked is an understatement! So I watched this game 3.....And I am noticing something weird....in spite of having The incomparable Magic and the allstar caliber Norm Nixon neither one of them could wrest the control of the tempo of the game from this guy I had never heard of before.....TOM HENDERSON! Coach Del Harris had did something that is deep....Calvin Murphy was the team's pg, and he had two sg's one of note to basketball guys of the 70s early 80s Mike Dunleavy....but he had another guy names Tom Henderson. So he has Calvin be the 6th man, starts two sgs and has. Tom Henderson run the point.....I only remember that Tom had 7 ass, he may have had 4 points in maybe 31 minutes......BUT I WITNESSED ONE OF THE GREATEST FLOOR GENERALSHIP, FLOOR GAMES IN MY BASKETBALL LIFE!! Obviously Moses was Moses.....But Tom had everybody where they were supposed to be, and playing HOUSTON BASKETBALL.....This game changed my life....and I finally began to understand just a little bit of what The one and only Bill Russell said about himself, "The greatest part of my game is invisible". Win shares simply can grasp the fulness of pgs floor generalship in a game, series or a season......Moses beat zeke in win shares no doubt in the time period u told me......but I am pretty sure he didn't pass him in floor generalship during those years......that is why pgs or even Point forwards win shares don't do them justice.....You pulled a lot out of me today.....BUT I LOVE IT!!

Moses took a Philly team that was overmatched in 1980 and 1982 against L.A., and with Moses they crushed everyone his 1st year and swept L.A..The 76ers made a terrible trade when they traded Moses for Jeff Ruland in 1986. Even if Jeff didn't get hurt and lose his career it was still a bad trade.

Sometimes he would come to the city and get a haircut at one of Harvey's 💈 barbershop's . where he would shop and buy jewelry from the Pawn shop I worked it was the 1980's and a real treat. He was a hometown and area hero. Love him and was sorry when he passed.
