Don't Buy MMA! Another Wish Product Review

  • Hi everybody
Welcome to… The Kirsty Meakin SHOW!!!!!
Today my client is.. me! It’s a hand dolly with my tattoos painted on, how cool is THAT? We’re going to be testing a kit from Wish, it was less than a fiver and Adam bought it, because he saw an Advert. Let’s see how crap it is.
When I started doing nails you could go to the pharmacy or “drug store” and buy a kit like this to do your nails yourself but you can’t in the UK anymore.
Look at that brush? It’s definitely synthetic and it’s already got a little bend in the top because it wasn’t protected. There’s a little cheap dampen dish which should be fine, I have one for my brow and lash tint. The acrylic liquid is just called acrylic liquid, and it’s not got and ingredients list so I’m worried it might be MMA… and it is! MMA is not advised for cosmetic use because it’s not flexible and if you damage the acrylic then you’ll damage your natural nail too, it’s so bad. MMA in a powder form is fine, but in liquid form it’s really bad for the nail. The jars for the powder don’t say the colours so we just have to guess.
We’re going to do this on tips because this is going nowhere near my nails and I’m wearing gloves to protect my hands. This brush is awful, the bristles aren’t straight at all, I wouldn’t even use this on a canvas. I’m going to try for a smile line with the pink, once the acrylic is on the nail it wants to stick to the brush. The clear, or maybe the natural, is so bubbly and the brush, 3 beads in, is already separating.
I’m doing a full nail of clear to see the full clarity of the clear powder. I’m going to have to use my own files on the smile line and it already feels hard so I’m using a higher grit file that normal. This rigidness isn’t good for a nail and can cause a lot of problems. I’m going to try the white and oh my god it’s so grainy! It’s sticking to the brush and the brush is flared out and super flexible so it’s not really doing anything to the acrylic. I’m struggling with this and I have decades of experience so imagine if you’re a beginner using this kit.
The pink is fairly transparent when it dried and is super bubbly. I tried to make the brush better, but it definitely didn’t work so that’s going in the bin. My poor, poor files had a workout filing these bad boys. The thing with MMA products as well is that the technicians using them will use an file and actually file the natural nail down which makes people scared of files but really, it’s just the fools using the tools. I’m going to try an e-file on the ombre nail and you can hear it struggling to work on this super hard product.
MMA is used in hip replacements and dentures where it’s cured in a mold but if it’s curing on your nail or in your mouth it’s not good so if a product doesn’t say exactly what it is with the ingredients list and a country of origin then don’t use it on your body.
I’m dying to top coat these nails because I think it’s going to be amazing (can you hear the sarcasm?)
I’m going to be using my own Top Coat for these nails, that Kirsty Meakin Gloss Topcoat which really just highlights all of the problems with these nails. They’re so bubbly and the clear is cloudy which is just awful.
Moral of this video is: don’t buy MMA, make sure you know EXACTLY what you’re buying before you buy it. I’ll see you in the next video.

This seriously terrifies me. I thought I went to “high quality” nail salons and everything that was explained/ happened in this video is what I thought was totally normal!!! I pay up $100 to 150 for a full set and my nails have become weak and brittle. My nail lady told me I should start taking more nail vitamins because I might have a deficiency… I feel so hurt and betrayed now!! I trusted her with my nails :,( I wish there is more honest people like you Kirsty Meakin. God bless you for sharing the dangers and to stay aware.

(As soon as I was comfortable) I was going to try acrylic and I’m so glad I didn’t open this kit!! Now with Kirsty’s help I can confidently throw it away!!

Your nails are.weak and brittle bc of your nail tech! She is filing down your nail to much during prep! Product never makes your nail weak or hurt it! It's the person that's dozing your nails! Pls get a new tech asap!! Acrylic does not ever damage nails unless the person did it wrong!

its worth the trouble to find someone more local:3✌🏻they have different ethics on what is right & wrong bc they grew up around you & prob. went to beauty school in your area where your local OSHA regulations are, well..regulated/enforced properly, & taught to us as we learn how to do nails, in a clinically clean environment.
im an ex-nail tech in the us, and i assure you, i was taught very specific procedure on safety & regulation of both my work & product. we werent allowed to use anything containing harmful chemicals including MMA or formaldehyde. the OSHA regulations are taped to the wall of every classroom & on the clinic floor.
the "classic" outsourced nail technicians didnt have the same regulations, or sanitary procedures. we have to use an autoclave, or dry heat sterilization oven for all metal instruments we use, no exceptions. & anything that can't be put in the oven, & is fully 100% sterilizable like reusable files etc, gets soaked in a very specific anti-microbial/anti-contaminate solution called barbicide.
its been a few years, but i assume the procedures are still the same. ive actually been knicked by a classic nail tech before, & she just dabbed glue onto my skin and kept going...we have VERY DIFFERENT blood spill procedures, & its not dab a bit of glue..
shopping local is worth the trouble, based on my own experience as both a nail tech & then customer myself. i promise you it will save you from staph infection, as well as everything else you might catch from unclean instruments & unsafe, unregulated chemicals. there are plenty of us, you just have to bother to look. your skin & nails are not something to be frivolous with, & wer're usually a lot more honest & cheaper.

I think almost every nail salon, where I live in the States, has decanted their acrylic powders and monomer. They are all very sweet people but I don’t think there is anyone in my area that does nails at the same quality and with the same attention to detail that I’ve seen from several different UA-cam channels.

Look for a facebook group for nail techs in your area. You'll find a lot of independent techs, small salons, etc, who tend to do very good work. Make sure you check for a license if it's required in your state though, they aren't always licensed, especially if they travel or work from home.

I 100% agree. I'm scared to go get my nails done cuz there are a lot of places I have been where they say they are using creative or something but it's mixed with other things. I hate doing my own, I'm a cosmetologist (retired) but I want to be pampered getting my nails done, not do my own. But too scared to go anywhere and get them done.

The key is don’t go to the walk-in nail salons in Walmart or where you can’t communicate with the nail techs. Super cheap nail prices usually mean cheap nail products with MMA. Quality nail products aren’t cheap so don’t expect inexpensive sets of nails. Most legitimate nail techs are proud to show the brands they use. There’s lots of us out there, look online. Always ask your nail techs questions if you’re unsure.

As Kirsty said… hip replacements…. My hubby just had two done and they use it as an adhesive or cement to the bone and parts… apparently it’ll last 10-20 years with regular wear; so imagine accidentally ripping an MMA based polymer off your nail bed by accident. 😱 I’m just hearing about using the tip to pry off the nails and it’s scaring the crap out of me! At my college nail course I remember my classmates talking about how some salons put cheap unregulated gels inside name brand bottles or pots of gel or how they convinced them that liquid powder was “new gel”. After that, I never went to a salon again and do my own nails. 😭 I wish we had the same regulations in the UK, so jelly! (In Canada). You are such a wealth of truth, Kirsty!

I should’ve known when the pricing sign said “removal” instead of Soak off that they were gonna pop them off. The guy did it so fast and my nails weren’t even lifted!! They advertised $20 to remove nails. I thought, fair enough. The used a nail tip to pry my nails off. All the top of my nails were torn off.. it was many many months before they healed. I bought one of these types of kits a few years ago to practice with and I really thought my skills were bad. I can work with gels really well but that discouraged me from working with acrylic. Honestly. I’m not a professional. I don’t have a channel but I started doing my nails in quarantine(in the U.S) so it’s been about a year and a half. This kit (I also got from wish) was the first thing I bought. I received it in the mail, had no experience, no nail knowledge but knew something wasn’t right about this kit. I’m so glad I never even opened it. Watching these kinds of videos beforehand is life changing. If I have no experience and a professional can’t work it then I know it’s bad. I would have been crushed if I used this on my first attempt and fail. So thank you for this video!! It’s empowering for a professional to give their knowledge to those who are learning or just starting out and what to use (or not to)

The cheap kit was really hard to work with and I used a plastic finger to experiment on luckily. Although I’m very proud of my first ever nail I wouldn’t use it again. Hello, Kirsty. Love your new line - so beautiful. Yes, I bought cheap products when I first started doing nails... What a waste of time. You actually made that crap look like decent nails - I'm talking about the shape and that is because of all your experience - but when you're new to nails, it is impossible. I was against gel (at that time) mostly because of price - I don't think there is that much difference now.
but, the point is, it made me switch to gel and I do love gel now. You did a great job with garbage but you'll never see me use that sh** ever again. HA! HA!

I have bought acrygel from Ali Express, and that was also not very good. It was when I started doing my own nails, before I went on yt to watch video’s such as yours to see which way to do it and what sort of products I need. Seeing this video and hear you talk about this cheap products made me realize i never want to use it again. I think the products became better over the years. When i was in my 20’s my mother did my nail in gel. And i always got my nails split from the tip to the nail bed. It was horrible. Now i use acrylic and since I have the right products and seen tons of video’s I manage to do it the right way and it stays on very good. So it makes al the difference if you buy cheap or expensive stuff. And you can make it as expensive as you want. There are so much products in so many prices. As long as you buy the proper stuff right. Very educational this video.

This truly horrifies me 😱 I know that I only use good products since they are purchased from honest websites. Nailchemy is one of my favourites. But after seeing this video I had to rush in to my studio room to check that all of my liquids and powders were EMA and not MMA... I bet the main reason why people puchase the cheap chinese kits, is because most reliable retailers only sell their product to certified nailtechs. Which they should... because an untrained person can afflict a whole lot of damage to themselves and others if they don't know what they're doing.

To say that I didn't have any nails left was an understatement. I told her, "If I knew you were going to rip everything off, including the nail, I could have easily smashed my hands in the truck doors and make them pop off myself instead of going through this organizing ordeal and paying $40."
