Thanks for the overview. One thing I discovered is that the instructions Crutchfield provided do not mention the pre amp out connections. Rather, their instructions have you connecting Alpine harness speaker wires to the Metra speaker wires. I guess most people would have caught that error, but not me! After thinking it through, I realized the error. Splicing RCA male to the Metra speaker wires then connection the the RCA female on the Alpine solved the hiss and poor audio quality. And the PAC is a little finicky, too… Directions for that ALSO needed revisions, but now we are enjoying upgraded audio! Thanks again for the video!
Wow. That’s a lot of work, but glad you sorted it. Satisfaction. I used to use an FM tuner, but got annoyed with white noise and re tuning when moving areas, so I plumbed in a Saab Blue unit. Cost around £80. Had to take unit out, and it feeds of CD multi changer feed. I use a (lovely) Brodit iPhone holder on dash, and Bluetooth to car. All steering wheel buttons work too. Total time, c 30-40 mins install. No change to dash unit looks👍🏻
I am new as subcriber, and it feels good for a former SAAB employee at SAAB market analys departement to see your entusiasm for the brand! Keep on Kyle!
Nice work. Just a couple of suggestions: you didn't need to run wires for switched and constant +12 from the light switch, both those signals can be found in the SID connector. I cannot quite understand the concept of an additional switch to trick the head unit into thinking that emergency brake is engaged, I would either tap into the wire going to pin14 in the main instrument unit connector, or wire permanently to the ground, but that's just me. Do you have an AS3/H-K system? How is the sound quality after the install? I'm asking, because factory unit uses balanced audio signals going to the factory amplifier, thus sending a regular line output from aftermarket HU can compromise the sound quality. Nevertheless, great job covering the whole topic, since installing an aftermarket head unit in 9⁵ is not an easy one hour job and as far as I know, no one made a video covering all the aspects of it.
Some head units that allow for video play require you have the emergency brake engaged (twice in a row for that matter) in order to allow video play. If you were to have a USB stick loaded with movies and plugged it in, for safety matters, it would require you to be in park and with emergency brake engaged. Can't be watching movies on the freeway.
Used the Pac for steering wheel controls on my 9-5, but only some of the buttons are working. For instance, skip forward works but not backwards. Volume up and down work, but not source button or next button. Any way to fix this? Brought to 2 installers, and neither can get it to fully functions 100%. I even bought the metra steering wheel control harness, which metra says doesn't fit, but a bunch of saab people have used with success. But the installer won't put it in, because the metra harness needs to be spliced into the wires on the SID. Help?
What did you do with the SID in relation to pac steering controls? I saw you mentioned that in the video, but what? Maybe that is where the install of mine is wrong?
Hi. Thanks for a great video. Im am looking for the frame you use in this video. It looks as It is in the same color as the rest of the dachboard. Thanks
Hey Kyle, what pin or wire color should we be splicing into for steering wheel controls? The Saab Unleashed video is blue, but my 2005 Aero SID doesn't have a blue wire. Mine has a stereo changer in the back though, not sure if that would change the wiring EDIT: I found a wire that's a greyish blue. I'm guessing that's the right one?
@@KylePancis ok so while this might work for certain gen 9-5's I don't believe it's possible with The facelifted Saabs. as the sid is relocated but on the constant mem wire you can usually just reverse red and yellow I know you already got it done but just a heads up.
Great job Kyle. I’m shopping for this upgrade in my 1999 9-5 but can’t find the Alpine with a CD player that you mentioned at the very end of this vid. Do you have the model # to that stereo???
You doing great job man. My model for Saab has a 6 loader player and a DVD player back in the truck. But they don't display on the screen except for the 6 loader just for audio disk. I really need help with the connections.
hey kyle i installed a aftermarket stereo touchscreen i tapped in the stereo wires to test for power while car was on & the check engine light & transmission light came on we couldn't get aftermarket stereo to work so we put original stereo back in the next day i turn on let it warm up put into reverse and jerks harshly it moves in to neutral & drive but while in drive the transmission wont shift i reset the codes with obd2 this code cameback Immediately up p1923 manufacturer control any suggestions would really help ? - 1999 saab 9-5 i already changed all transmission fluids a month ago
Seems like the original radio connectors should have all the power lines needed. No one does install guides like this. Can't believe the steering buttons work. Thanks. I don't think I can bring myself to take out the original radio though. The buttons, lights and Scandinavian style are too good. Good to know though.
@@KylePancis yeah I've decided to use a crimping method with a butt splice connector, and female stake on. Just need to know what specification of wire lol.
The $5 bluetooth FM transmitter I plug into my cigarette lighter lets me have bluetooth music, music from and SD card or USB stick, lets me make handsfree phone calls, has an aux in and two USB ports. My factory radio is untouched so I also have AM/FM, CD and tape. And I can just take it from one car to another. I just don't see the point of going to the hassle and cost of replacing the radio when a $5 option is there....but that's just me.
The audio quality suffers greatly from compression through Bluetooth, then yet more compression through FM - as well as the issue with interference of course
I don't understand how factory original radio is a good thing. FM transmitters sound like crap and also you can just cut the soldered wires and attach the original radio if someone really wants that thing in.
I installed a double din on my son's 9-5 and could not figure out to get the steering wheel function setup. I also was not able to get radio to work in KEY ON position but only works in ACC position. Great video, this really gave me some input. I will try to follow to setup SWC.
@@KylePancis hey, brought my car to 2 installers. They can't figure out how to get the hiss or buzz sound to go away. First installer got it installed and radio had a hiss even at low volume.
