Great video! I've been thinking about making a few gift boxes to present a nice bottle of wine or Scotch in, and I think that this design might be the winner!
I made two larger japanese toolboxes with my grandsons. They prize them, not for holding tools, but LEGOs and Pokemon cards. It is a nice project to do with children.
@7:31 I don't understand the planing jig that was used in this video -- it looks as if the plane ought to be cutting into both the jig and the material being planed, but clearly that isn't happening?
John, loving your show - been using Japanese saw for 20+ years and now I know what that flat area's for - thanks!! question regarding your danish oil. Where do you get your large cans? thanks again!
Another fine video and the box is excellent. I love the nice snug fit 'clunk'. I'm guessing from your choice of saws, chisel technique and project inspiration that you are a like-minded fan of the incredible world of Japanese joinery! I also approve of the working without talking in this video. It takes far more confidence in what you are doing to just let people watch you. Arty low angle panning at the end with a hint of Japanese sounds. All combines to a 10/10 video from me. Ps What's in the log looks like a wooden trophy?
Thanks Steve glad you enjoyed it. Japanese woodworking is amazing they have some beautiful joinery! Its a chalice in the log or the " Cup of the Fairy Folk" I made a video on it if you want to check it out.
somewhat debating using a newer jack plane (70s onwards probably) I have that's extra wide my grandad gave me years ago and drilling and tapping some holes on the sides to mount a guide track and to make it a semi-permanent shooting board, additionally this would allow a side mounted handle on top, alternatively I may just get a new sole fabricated to use the frog that's purpose built to be a sled of a shooting board.
John, I'm new to woodworking and have started with your box here. Mine is a bit bigger for my hand plane and a few other tools. I'm wondering how you affixed the base to your box. I'm afraid if I just glue it, it won't be strong enough. Perhaps a rabbit? What would be your suggestion? Thank you
@ericerf6837 I didn't do before, but it wasn't the pandemonium. I started to do it because a robbery invaded my home, attacked me and my mother... I even got hurt by a hammer in the right ear...
Hey, I’m sorry to make fun then…since we watch many of the same makers, I always chuckle when I see you comment, knowing what’s coming. I’ll see it a different way now. Respect!
@ericerf6837 Oh, don't worry about it! At all! 😊 Do you watch FPV videos as well? People kinda already know me there, but on woodworking it's the first time! 😂
Nice! Will be doing this myself, but with a set of plug cutters for the dowels. I have a drill powered lathe I picked up used, and bought a set of very entry level tools. Any chance of a how to type video? Love the channel. Only been woodworking since lockdown but have developed enough that people wanna buy my little bits of nonsense!
Fun stuff, John! I’m new to your channel, and I’ve just got to ask. Where are you from? Your accent sounds like a combination of Aussie and German to my dumb ears 😉

Awesome job mate.

Love the box the only change I would be to use timber that is thinner. But yours will last for years
Lovely little box, and very well explained
Cheers Gary
Love it ! Fancy having a go at one of these myself. Thanks for the vid.
I felt Irish ☘️ watching this vid

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed oh yeah I skipped that one due to lathe envy!
That's amazing John!!! Well done :)
what material is best to make a shooting board from to keep long term and keep it square?

Beautiful and precise work. Interesting concept. Love your channel. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Louis

I would cut a groove about 5-10mm up from the bottom and insert a plywood base. The plywood won't expand and contract
Beautiful work, John! 😃
I'm thinking about making a box like that for my chisels! 😃
Stay safe with your family. Wow, he doesn’t rate? Or you didn’t do that pre-pandemic? Lol

Nice little box, I've seen a lot of those that come out almost identical but yours doesn't do that and still looks good.
