    Should have used a slug in the center section to press the tubes cause you run the risk of crushing the housing. And I wouldnt mig weld the center section to the tubes. Definitely tig weld with ni-rod or nickel rod. Sure it may burn in initially, but they all crack after time. If you want to see how to press tubes in a housing watch videos by Dynatrac. There is a reason they are the best axles around.

    I have a dumb question here. I have a friend who has all the equipment to be able to retube a axle. Welding is no problem for me but he has a 60 ton press. The tubes did you buy them or did you just buy some cold rolled pipe and do the machining yourself as far as how the seals will seat and all??
    This really doesn’t look like a hard job to do and beats the hell out of paying those insane prices the axle builders charge.

    • @hckeypunk13
      @hckeypunk13 6 років тому +1

      your, "built not bought" moto is ignorance in this case. the cost of retubing an axle is often more than just paying the added cost associated with purchasing the more desirable 44 with welded wedges. which was also available with a 1/2" wall tube as well... the retube job done in this video was done right, that cannot be argued.
      but time is money for some of us.

    I have a 2013 mustang gt with both rear tires worn more from outer half than inner half. The wear from outside to inner is gradual. Is this sign of bent axle housing?

    • @xmo552
      @xmo552 4 роки тому

      Are you sure it's a *2013*???
      A 2013 has a "8.8 rear axle" it's solid. That's super weird to have bald tires on the outsides. All Mustangs (except 99-04 Cobra) have always had solid rear axles. If you jumped it maybe you could bend it; your tires would wear on the INSIDE edge.
      99-04 Cobra
      And
      2015 and newer Mustangs...
      Have independent rear suspension (IRS) if the car is slammed (negative camber) the tires will go bald on the INSIDE. If the alignment (toe) is bad the tires can wear out on the OUTSIDE.

    So most solid axle specs I've read recommend 4-6 degrees of positive caster, I believe the XJ's are set at the factory to 7 degrees, so I'm curious to know how your rig has been feeling on the road with 10 degrees? Is this what the final measurement ended up at once it sat with the weight?

    • @hckeypunk13
      @hckeypunk13 6 років тому +1

      increased castor does a good job of helping larger tires return to center and avoid wandering on the road. more than 10 degrees may be excessive though.
      keep in mind castor is irrelevant unless you take into account pinion angle as well. i built my 44 with the castor 16 degrees relative to the center line of the pinion. so the axle ran the axle at about 7 degrees of castor (pinion pointed up about 6 degrees) in a cherokee with about 5" of lift on 35s. without anything to compare it to... it didnt leave anything to be desired.

    • @motownXJdad9565
      @motownXJdad9565 3 роки тому

      normal caster spec for a stock XJ with 215\75\15 tires is 3.5-8.5, if anything 10 is probably on the conservative side for 35" tires and 4 .5 inches of lift. the more caster the better with larger tires, it stabilizes tracking and helps prevent death wobble.

    • @lol123321123321
      @lol123321123321 Рік тому

      I believe the caster was set to 10 degrees with a flat pinion angle. Once you adjust your control arms for pinion angle I'm sure he ended up with about 5 degrees caster angle give or take 1 degree. I run 5* caster on my jeep on 35s with an excellent pinion angle and it does great. Actually running 8+ degree caster angle is excessive and will hinder steering response. Most super duty Dana 60s only run about 3 degrees.

      @JohnPaul-qh5ys 2 роки тому

      Yes, in the 70's dodge had a dana 44 with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern. I'm not sure if you'd have to use the inner C or just swap the knuckles but it's doable. Just FYI the wheel bearings are setup similar to the Dana 35 ttb and don't last very long with big tires and being side loaded.

    So what's that mod cost? It looks nice but doesn't look cheap, I guess if your running a small tire you wouldn't need more front axle. It'll be bulletproof for 35's. Run solid joints though, that's always been the weak link in a 44. Good luck. Nice build.
