  • Here is the Roland MC-202 playing Theme from Ernest Borgnine by Squarepusher. It is going through my first-gen Alesis Midiverb that I recently cleaned (hence the open face).
    Not completely accurate, but not bad for having not heard the track for a year or two.

    For people who are wondering how this works:
    First, he writes the correct notes in 'pitch' mode. Then, from 0:16 he enters 'step' mode to set the step length of each step. From 1:00, the last 4 high pitched notes are threated with the 'Accent' and 'Portamento' effects, located on the bottom right side of the MC-202. Before he starts the loop in Play mode, he first enables Cycle mode by pressing Shift->Tempo. Cycle mode will loop the notes endlessly.

    Just came back after at least a decade since I first saw this video... this video is what I used to watch on repeat dreaming about owning a MC-202. I bought one in 2015 or 2016 and then moved into using 1v/oct CV/Gate analog modular gear. This is one of the core memories and pieces of inspiration from my teen/early 20s. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart!

    I like how you picked tracks from squarepusher and aphex twin that are quite similar, both built on a looping, monophonic synth sequence.

    I used 2 Alesis MMT8 multi-track sequencers throughout the 90's. Brilliant when new and easy to navigate, but after a few years of industrial usage, the touchpad sensors wear out and you have to press REALLY HARD :P

  • @Slider2732
    @Slider2732 11 років тому

    Had 2 of them around 1990, both had small electrical issues. Nowadays I could probably fix them in an afternoon !
    This guy treats his stuff with care..probably had all the screws in a neat box to put the Midiverb back together too lol

  • @EtcEtcAndEtc
    @EtcEtcAndEtc 13 років тому

    @HeresJamesPrice too right, you caught the spirit of the tune perfectly, obviously with a few tweaks you could get it pretty much identical, but that would be a step too nerdy.
    Beautiful sound.

    @HeresJamesPrice In a related note, We are at the age where techno covers should be done. I would pay for that since I live in the US and no one tours over here worth a shit anymore. In fact Squarepusher cancelled a show that I was attending in Orlando, it was very saddening to not see him.

    you can get them sometimes for $550 which I think is pretty decent considering 303's sell for $1500 sometimes. the 202 sounds great too and is really quirky so it brings a lot to the table, not expensive for what it offers I think.

    but the 2 sound sooooooo different. I've got them side by side and they are night and day. the 202 is much more dynamic, if I had to choose one or the other I'd definitely go 202

  • @johnisfaster
    @johnisfaster 15 років тому

    but the 101 has a noise source and more modulation shapes, of course this sound doesn't make use of those but I'm just sayin it was probably a 101
