- Forget copper vs. fibre. There's another really big reason why your network speeds are so variable. And there's not much you can do about it.

The problem with Australian internet is the 30 + year old eroding copper wiring. What does the NBN do? It connect straight into the copper wire.
*FACEPALM*
ThePeoplesChamp You can thank Tony Abbott for that
ZIVERE it’s more expensive now than labor’s plan
Actually some of it is even older
But but but Turnbull said cheaper, sooner, faster and 25Mbps for everyone by 2016 and a fit for purpose network all for just $29Bn!! Did he lie?
No he actually thought this plan was going to work - who do you trust to make sound financial decisions with our money, to build CRITICAL infrastructure right for our future?
And hey on current estimates he's only 72% over-budget and only 130% over-schedule. Oh yes and it's an amateurishly-complex, perpetual maintenance $headache (copper in pits) that is already out of date.
that is called double think friend, government will have you sent off to the gulags.
@@halsterhof I get 40 MBPS so, for me it is different
There is an old joke:- How do you tell if a politician is lying? Their lips move. ( they don't always do so verbally any more )
A bonus joke:- How can you tell if a politician is on the level? They dribble from both sides of their mouths.
I hate my internet! Australia was the first country to invent wifi and now other countries have better wifi! Good job Australia!!
See Cable internet had good download but upload was trash.
NBN has average download but excellent upload. This is a problem.
Also I just installed mine.
Love my country

Wifi and Internet are different, everybody has the same wifi technology, we just have a worse connection to give to the wifi

This is exactly what's happening. During peak hours my internet is slow. When it's late at night, it reverts to the regular speed.
i know its stupid i think they should just get rid of the copper over all and should just do FTTP or FTTH
WubzyFN that’s what Labor was doing
Don't worry in 15 years they'll figure out the next greatest thing and we can go through the whole thing again.
Until then we are stuck behind dumb roadhogs holding up the overtaking lane!
Thank Malcolm Turnbull you're the greatest thing that didn't happen in Australian politics.

Another example of governments having no clue what they are doing yet people keep wanting even bigger governments.
@@illiiilli24601 I like how you think one half of the government (filled with pencil pushing bureaucrats) would be any more efficient that the other half (pencil pushing bureaucrats) lol
I heard that a lot of it is due to the copper cable from the house to the optic fibre connection, should be optic fibre all the way to the house. at any rate there seems to be a lot of grumpy people out their.and when it is fully installed, none of us will have a choice, it is all going NBN and the old system will be turned off. THEY HAVE TO FIX THIS.
I hear ya, I have Telstra cable where I get 115mbps down, I'm not excited to switch over to the NBN because I know my download speeds won't be as fast because they'll be rationing bandwidth like its WWI. If only governments weren't full of old farts that don't understand our world.
some of us don't get any cables hear we have wireless NBN i don't know if it is any good i am still on ADSL2+ down speed 0.8 MB/s 1MB/s (if i am lucky) and 0.2MB/s up speed. does any one else have the Wireless NBN and is it any good?
Dominic Mammone Wow. How do you even survive having 0.2 mbs download speeds. With those speeds, you wont even be able to load a 240p youtube video hence why i doubt those are your actual speeds. Nbn is good when you buy the 100mbs tier but it does drop out often which is annoying if you play online games.
kenny lam lol i got the down and up speeds back to front I should proofread or more often
kenny lam as for switching over NBN for us we have run into a problem as we are a business account it is extremely expensive to get NBN and since the NBN rollout Telstra it have taken away the ability for business account to go back to a consumer account
It took me an hour to watch this 2 minutes video its that bad
i just had my NBN installed and download speed dropped from 45MBPS to 11.8MBPS with NBN. what a joke wtf is this anyway ?
You on HFC?
Was this on The Checkout or so,ethimg similar? seems like it could be
What is CVC and AVC?
Simple answer is that the NBN is to slow, you spend all this money just to get 100Mb speeds which most people get on cable as well.
Why should be at least gettinh 500Mb speed but we don't because Australian provides like to rip of people.
It's such a shame that something so good has just been f***** over.
Tbh, even in Australia, to get solid 100mb before the nbn would be the dream. If I had that, I’d probably be satisfied, at least for now...
Bro we pay for 25mbs per second and when I download shit when I'm the only one using the internet I usually get 400kb-600kb/s its ridiculous
Spinz Same I pay for nbn 100 and and 20 down 2 up
if your on fttp then it should actually be 1gbps potentially higher, but not in Australia
No one will need the internet, they will all be paying extra to watch foxtel and the internet is a cheaper, better alternative to foxtel. ( Please Mr Murdock, give the LNP your support. )
In the 50's or 60's The head of IBM said we will only need 5 computers to cover all the computing power the world will need.
In the 2010's, Tony Abbott said people will only use the internet to check for rarely used Emails, They will visit Uncle Ruppert's networks of pay TV or newspapers for entertainment...
One of these men had history on their side, that is the trends looked like that. The other thought he could turn back time, ( probably had a crush on Cher )
One found his company to be losing business. The other:- what happens when a country goes from 1st world to 3rd?
Uncle Ruppert still rules the Liberals.( much as he does Trumpists )
Did you just call "The Homer" less expensive than the Millenium Falcon? It's an abomination!
Wow! Well explained thanks!
I'm exaggerating a bit but it took literally 1 minute to load the video, and the quality is literally 480p when I watched this video
Ricky Jiang same
My problem is a doggy bridge tap that NBN co installed and now won't fix
Internet is only EXPENSIVE now in Australia!!! CANCELLING mine now that the contract has expired!!! 💔 Costs DOUBLED in five years for light users with any form of data provision. Because of their greedy starting prices!!! This makes me hate selfish rich people!!! What about the other 99% you are suffocating in this world??? 💔
NBN stands for (No Bloody Network)
6 years on, no change to NBN quality. Embarrassing that 3rd world countries have better networks than Australia 😂
That Still Doesnt Explain Why we Have some of the Slowest internet Speeds in the Modern World!
meanwhile in Singapore, cheap cost 1Gbps fiber internet for every home is blazing fast
Yeah, and Singapore is the size of Geelong. Fuckwit.
And Geelong has FTTP 90% sure lol.
So your telling me that it’s up to the internet providers wait that’s why a few weeks ago my internet wasn’t working Optus just didn’t buy enough bandwidth yet
Haha luckily I use pixel cables as my internet line constant 49 download everyday any time
Laughs in Romanian 🤣 we get 1GBPS for 15 dollars. Sorry to my Australian bros
NBN.... No Bloddy Net
No more buffering
Mainly slow cause of the multi technology mix instead of almost all FTTP.
DW, all you need for FTTP is to be in politics.
it just explained why the internet is slow, but plz tell us why the heck internet is slow in AUSTRALIA!!!!!!
@Paul Jameson Hi, thanks for explaining, 'the internal telephone wiring' is the stuff that takes over phone line when my dad is using the computer in 1990s?
I am installing new fibre optics for you aussies. Soon you will have as fast as internet as the rest of the world
I wish it didn’t take me 20 minutes to watch this video
What about raise the AVC and cancel CVC I know this is quite stupid but seems to be the only way to get rid of it.
cnet is based in UK?
San Francisco. And Claire is talking about Australia's slow NBN here. So c|net is all over the world, but based in San Francisco.
Cnet's parent company CBSi has an office in sydney
Not exited for nbn
Same Telstra/NBN propaganda here as everywhere else, blaming ISPs for not buying enough bandwidth instead of the NBN for charging so much for said bandwidth that ISPs simply cannot afford to buy enough to cover their customer's demand, they even included Telstra as one of the ISPs who have to buy CVC when they're the ones who actually run the show! Telstra's NBN's like the capitalist version of China's Great Firewall, one provider to rule them all, and it's disheartening to see how few realize that Australia's entire telecommunications industry is now under the control of a single company.
"Forget copper vs. fibre." What? You mean, forget the difference between the speed of electrons and photons? What? ... Propaganda.
You think you got problems. Try "Fixed Wireless"
I have fixed wireless and I get exactly the speed I pay for. Another fuckwit.
We had fixed wireless for about 4 years and rarely had bandwidth above 10mbps despite paying for 100mbps and had daily drop outs with no connection at all, sometimes for hours or even days at a time. We changed ISP 5 times and nothing changed and phone calls to ISP's complaining about no internet connection was so frequent we considered employing someone purely to complain about our internet. Phone calls to NBN resulted in being told they couldn't do anything and to contact our ISP's. Instead, we recently switched to StarLink and now regularly get 250mbps or more and so far we haven't had to make a single phone call about no internet connection.
😂The fact i m watching this in 2024 on NBN connection, and it's so slow that i have to switch to 5G to put down this comment is so facking irony... zero improvement over the years
I have a bad feeling about this.
docsis 3.1 should start in 2018 then everyone should be happy.
Nah The cable is 20 years old and Telstra has not propelly equiped the cable network. (good for pay TV thats it) there will be no end of problems :-( . Docsis 3.1 is good if the cable network is in good shape in about 5 years they will switch to fiber.
Very funny
While everyone is blaming the government of the day during (between 2013-2019) but remember the previous government proposed the NBN with all these bells and whistles in 2007 stating that it would cost $10 billion. The problem is that the government of 2007-2013 sold to the people a mirage and the NBN after being launched quickly doubled and there was no stopping the increases. As a stop gap measure as back then fibre was expensive, some FTTP premises had 100mb fibre when it should be 1gb fibre.
The government was changed at 2013 on the promise that they will cut the excess fat from the NBN. Problem is that they scaled it back too much and the costs peaked at approximately $50 billion.
Who is blame... both governments. The first government for selling snake oil to the people without properly costing the project and the second for making a stupid promise to cut it back.
If we're were to continue with fibre, the costs would be extrodinary and maybe the NBN would charged the telcos even more.
Also comparing Australia to New Zealand or the USA is like comparing apples to oranges as Australia has 95% of the population along the coast while the rest is dotted in the vast country. At least the U.S. us spreader quite evenly. New Zealand... They are a tiny country ergo easy to install fibre cheaply.
They can't even do VDSL properly. Compare Openreach in the UK to the NBN. In the UK, most ISPs have scrapped traffic shaping since they have more than enough bandwidth and they're doing just fine with hardly any slowdown, even during the lockdown at this moment in time. In the UK, VDSL deployments has more or less completed and everyone is moving to FTTP, with the UK gov targeting gigabit speeds for all the UK by 2025.
first what is an nbn
NBDeer17 Media if you don't want the nbn, is there regular internet connection? What's the speed?
The test I just did in the States 29 dls 7uls
Eran: Sort off for a while. Once the NBN goes live in an area you have a maximum of 18 months to transition onto the NBN system after which other options such as ADSL will be shut off. So if the NBN is slower for someone than ADSL tough after a year and a half that's what you have to deal with from then on.
Fortunately they are working on making sure connections are at around 60% of the speed you are paying for during evening peak. In Aust there are 4 levels 12, 25, 50 and 100. New Zealand have 1000 (1Gbs) by comparison, so even the fastest we can get is slow by current world standards.
GZ it's the new word for shit .
Waiting on 5G Yagi antennas and a decent 5G data plan.. and NBN.. well it can bite the big one.

Sorry couldn't even watch the video the NBN so bad
*Solution:* buy 100 mbps plan.
not all NBN technologies can achieve 100/40mbps. Factors like distance and quality of the cables can drastically affect speeds.
That solution doesn't work. Even if you buy the 100/40 plans you'll still get bottleneck due to oversubscription. A lot of optus customer with 100/40 nbn plans barely get 12mbps during peek hours.
The '100mbps' rating is only how high it CAN go. If ur on in the middle of the night where theres absolutely no people awake then sure you might get 100. Thats if no other bottleneck is at play.. aka distance from node and quality of cable.
Do what new zealand done scrap cvcs and open full bandwidth. U pay and u get .Australian will never see these speed because of this pricing sheam.
75% of fttn customers cannot achieve this speed
Uploading more stupid videos on facebook...lmao.
SHE IS SO CUTE
It’s really fast for me
Nah, it's probably below the world standard. As Australia proudly rolls out 100mbps as the max speed a lot of other countries have had that for multiple decades already and are now upgrading to 1gbps and 10gbps connections over fibre. We are way behind and FTTN can't handle more than 100mbps so we will be stuck with this rubbish for decades while the rest of the world rolls out the network we should've had to begin with (FTTP)
Informative and she is cute as a button.
I’m aussie and my internet is fine
