The human-dalek was an interesting concept, but I didn't like the execution very much. I think they didn't really think it through well, because it could have been terrifying if it were written differently .
Andrew Garfield in this is one of the most random pre-fame celebrity guest roles on Doctor Who lol. Carey Mulligan and Daniel Kaluuya are also good ones.
This is personally one of my favourite Dalek stories in the show to date. I love how Helen Raynor (the writer of the episode) gives the Cult of skaro development as characters by giving each member an individual personality from one another that differs them from a standard Dalek. I also enjoy the scene of the cult debating amongst themselves, which is something that we rarely see the Daleks do. Dalek Sec also peaks the viewers interest because, he wants his comrades to see that they need to evolve to survive or they will ultimately become extinct. The reveal of The Dalek Sec Human Hybrid design is also beautifully shot and well executed. The Story itself is a love letter to Sci-fi because it’s filled with themes from Sci-fi movies of the 1930s-60s, Helen Raynor even made sure to include design elements that resembled the artistic style of time period. Criminally underrated story imo. Great reaction as always very glad you enjoyed it. xx
Yes, that is indeed Andrew Garfield, who was born in California but grew up in the UK, BTW, so when speaking naturally he has a British accent. This was in 2007, about 5 years before he starred in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. Another face you may recognize is Soloman, played by Hugh Quarshie who also played Captain Panaka Star Wars Episode I. Another "before they were famous" actor to look out for in just a couple episodes is Carey Mulligan.
So fun fact this Human Dalek design was shown off in the Radio Times i think before Series 3 started and boy it was a shame it was spoiled ahead of time
15:22 I’m not super savvy in Classic Who stuff, but I knew prior to this episode that the Daleks used to look human. So when I saw this episode it was almost like they were trying to reclaim that appearance.
Yeah, but they just looked like regular humans. Although one of their scientists talked about how their internal anatomy doesn't really match up with humans, so there's that.
The Whoverse and the Buffyverse have the most amazing "pre-famous" cameos, so I'm excited to watch you spot them all! You can tell David Tennant is Shakespeare/RSC trained with the venom in his Dalek survival speech about "while I lose everything", it's superb. Brilliant reaction, thanks for the time!
Yeah honestly that's a complaint I've got about 'Who' that applies to the entire show. Even in the older days, you'd get a really interesting episode with a solid build-up with a sudden 'DUN DUN DUNNN' reveal at the end of a Dalek or a Cyberman... which was spoiled by the 4-part story being titled 'The Dun-Dun-Dunnn of the Cybermen'. Case in point, the elevator reveal would've been a really awesome moment... except the episode is literally called 'Daleks in Manhattan'. We're in Manhattan, and we're expecting Daleks.
I think it's still a really awesome moment, but it is true that it's not a "surprise" given we know the episode title. The last really big monster reveal that wasn't spoiled that way was maybe Earthshock, which does not mention the Cyberman at all so you can still be surprised to see them at the end of ep 1.
Loved the setting, and Tallula is right up there with Harriet Jones... Would watch a depression-era X-Files/Torchwood sci-fi series if there is one. I think there was an occulty 70s series.
I was with my husband , our 2 young kids, his parents, 2 susters, and BIL in Hawaii when this episode aired. They saw the ending and basically said "What the heck are you watching?!?!?" ☺️
Yay! I love how excited you are by the cliff hanger of this story 😆 Thank you for sharing how much fun you're having. I'm always a fan of a Dalek storyline, as 'legacy' villains, the talking giant pepperpots who could so simply be foiled by stairs? 🤔 They had to find ways to make them more menacing to a modern audience, and weirdly, it never seems to matter what we do with them, those originals remain the blueprint for fear.
Yep! This is a younger Andrew Garfield, five years before he became Spiderman, and before he was in the movies The Other Boleyn Girl (though he's listed as "credit only" on IMDb, and it's been way too long since I watched the movie that one time that I don't remember if he was really in it or not) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
Miranda Raison's also done some voice work for Bioware's "Dragon Age" games, playing a character known as Seeker Cassandra Pentaghast, yet another radically different character. I was totally surprised when I had realized I was watching her play Tallulah. She has such a great voice.
I thought I had watched every episode of Doctor Who since the 2005 revival but somehow I completely missed this episode. This was a very fun way to discover a new episode of Doctor Who.
I believe Andrew Garfield was about 22 when this episode was filmed. This is a fun 2 parter - I like the 1930s New York setting. The look of the human-Dalek hybrid is, however, highly disturbing.
It's funny how many big British actors and writers got their big breaks on this show. I see you are on "Blink" right now, and so you'll know that we also get another future Oscar-nominated actor in this season!
Personally for me I find the cult of Skaaro very freaky, Daleks who aren’t rigidly following a path but have an imagination? That’s terrifying. They’re dangerous enough when they are almost mechanical in their thinking, with all their rules and orders; but when they’re free to get creative they’re somehow so, so much more menacing.
Any story with the Cult of Skaro is perfect. You’ll see them again but this is a fantastic double story. Love Tallula. Andrew Garfield is so young in this. Probably one of the first screen appearances he made.
People refer to the construction of the Empire state a perfect project, in time and on budget. I always think to myself: who would dare not to with those masters.
Yep- Andrew Garfield, before he was 'Andrew Garfield' (sort of). This period of Doctor Who did a great job of casting actors just before they hit the bigtime! There are so many of them.
its ok if you see just the title , i tend back in the day to watch full to end and whats next week so i had a good cliffhanger to be ready for. and when it comes to the queen i still think its from when rose and the doctor fought the werewolf so it didint surprise me to think she would still hate him lol
@@AmyElnah Pity to add spoilers here, even with a warning. If you have seen those episodes you know, but if you haven't you are still working towards them.
I think I live in a bubble! So often when im watching a reaction video, the reactor says "isn't that a young XX?" and name some apparently famous actor that I've never heard of, and only know through their brief appearances in some of my favourite shows. It's happened with Pedro Pascal (in a Buffy S4 episode), Amy Adams (Buffy S5), Zac Efron (Firefly)... and now Andrew Garfield. I clearly don't watch enough newer stuff (I've never seen any Spiderman). Goid to know that my favourite shows were good at spotting and casting talented young actors though!
Always thought this was a really underrated 2-parter. Really fun and weird, honestly feel it's a better version of Evil of the Daleks, sacrilegious as that opinion is, I like them doing new things with the daleks.
Not a personal favorite; sometimes I think the DW writer's room was like "This episode seems a little weak", "Meh, just throw some Daleks at it, it'll be fine."
Glad you enjoyed it. This story comes in for a lot of critical abuse - some of it warranted - some of it not. I never understood why the Daleks used pig slave workers to do their bidding. I mean, why pigs? Why was there any need to change the physicality of the humans at all to be able to control them? It would have been cool to have controlled the human slaves by turning them into Robomen (from Classic Dalek Doctor Who) as I just feel the pig make up (which isn’t great IMO) made them look more stupid than terrifying. For me, this is the worst Dalek story since the show returned, two years earlier, and I think part of this story’s backlash was the fact that even by this time, the Daleks were being overused in the series. They needed a break from our screens and should only have returned when there was a good enough story to merit bringing them back. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
humans aren't evil murderous beings? aren't you forgetting all of human history? and the first christmas special, "the monsters are coming, the human race!" 😄
Can you please react to the Saban’s Power Rangers 2017 Movie!!! It is a very goooood movie. You may look at the name and think it is childish and cheesy. But it is hilarious and shows the growth of friendship and trustworthy. I swear it is a must watch.❤❤
for a long time fans like me, yes the "human darlek" is indeed a.... choice.... personally having watched all of classic once and nuwho several times, i have grown to appreciate the episodes here, but i was not a fan of it in the beginning, felt odd and somehow forced? not sure if thats just me or if im the only one that thinks that tho, but yea, grown to like the episodes for what they are
They should have stuck with Human Daleks being the Daleks' replacement for new who in retrospect. Current Dalek stories suck, like Dalek Sec sucking on Mr. Diagoras.

They really should have given this episode the moniker of “Mutants in Manhattan” to maintain a modicum of mystery for a moment.
This is personally one of my favourite Dalek stories in the show to date.

What you said about Garfield, that he is a completely different person in every role, this is what I admire about David Tennant.
Your "It's the production budget" line was hilarious. 🤣

I love that the Human Dalek still has his black and white shoes.
100%. That is going to be a choice of a human dalek.
The human Daleks and the Silence all have personal tailors, apparently. ☺️
Love that for this episode you have a TARDIS and a Spiderman behind you 💖💖

Dalek Sec knew they had to change even before he became human.
You're absolutely on point, this was always one of the more controversial stories of season 3. (I mean mainly the human dalek aspect)

The Time Lords didn't go after the Daleks, the Daleks went after the Time Lords.
There is a deleted scene in the TARDIS about Martha and The Doctor deciding on this detour - deleted for pacing.
