What a beautiful interviewer he was. This gathering of guests giving him the platform is a sign of the respect he is held in. August 2023 was saddened by his passing. RIP Sir Michael. Much love to family and friends.
and you can see how much the other guests really respect him and the experience he has as a journalist and interviewer, they're not just being polite for tv
How brave of someone as high profile as Michael to share his own personal experiences, without fear of judgement and not portray himself as a victim or ask for sympathy. He is so honest and genuine he knows where has been and doesn't hide it. How many of today's media even get close to this guy?
Alcohol will ruin your career. Hmm. I found him a bit of a bully to certain guests. Muhammad Ali he pushed him, reducing him jolly japes are why he did adverts for life insurance. A bit like Wogan. To publicly be all matey with his pet guests, his favourite, The Mighty Yin, well, I felt as a child, this is weirdly uncomfortable. 😢
It’s been a pleasure to know you Sir Michael, we have lived at a time when these personalities have given us great interest and joy, and we had the best of man to bring their stories to us. Thank you .
I'm not even british but even I consider Parkinson a national treasure! - one of the finest talkshow hosts that has even been. The defintion of a class act.
I am Australian & i am sure Parky was adored by all in OZ . Great interviewer & his books were filled with laughter especially those written about the goings on in the lives of cricketers 👏
I grew up watching parky, fantastic series, especially in the 70s, nothing comes near it even today, wish I could turn the clock back, great Saturday night television back then .
Totally agree...used to sit there with my Grandma & brothers ( 8,10&13)...& even at that age loved watching & being fully thrilled at the guest he had on on a Saturday evening...nobody comes close & he was right, there is no mystery anymore due to social media. It's the same 'c' - lebrity people doing the rounds on every show these days. He was classic . People learned a lot from Parky.
God time really does fly, my favourite decade would be the seventies, love watching all the old shows, but TV back then was great , swap shop, on Saturday morning, God now it's all cookery programs, very little Saturday night variety on now, if you don't like reality shows, cooking programs, and you have to pay a fortune to watch the premier League, then you're screwed
Very true John. My grandmother was a huge fan and couldn't wait to see the show being broadcast every Saturday night. He ended up getting that great nickname 'parky'. The best British TV interviewer ever to me. He carried out so much research on his guests beforehand which showed and, together with that, added a little humour too. His only interview which didn't work out was that one with Meg Ryan. She wasn't too helpful in answering the questions. Not an easy person to interview!
Wonderful to see Parkinson being every bit as interesting, engaging and classy as the best that he interviewed. Good too to see a long interview where you get an in depth perspective.
Michael’s drinking exploits with Billy Connolly were the stuff of legends. Thank God Michael saved himself. I admire his truthfulness and strength. Kudos to his dear lady wife.
I have always loved Parky and looked forward to his interviews with some really amazing people. Charming, informed and well mannered. I am sorry to learn about his problems with alcohol but, sadly, this happens though it is ugly and can destroy families. Thank God for Mary and her straight talking to Parky. Married for 60 years, I am glad that they resolved their problems and Parky remains totally charming even in the other chair. God bless him and Mary Parkinson.
Michael Parkinson was and is a class act. So honest and so self-revealing. My hat is off to this gentlemen who just gave us a recipe for his conversations. The host of Skavian is excellent and I am always astonished by his interesting questions.
one of the greatest interviewers ever.a real natural that got some real legends to open up about their lives that people didnt know about.hes also interesting when he talks about his own life.
It's so nice to see an interviewer with such reverence and respect for Parky. It gives us all hope that there are still journalists that want to listen, engage and learn from their guests. I salute you, Mr Skavlan
Parkinson......a legend. A great Yorkshireman! Down to earth , honest, knowledgeable. To see how engaged the others were listening is amazing to see, a master craftsman talking about his work is enthralling. Thank you Michael Parkinson, from one Yorkshireman to another, you have enriched my life and others’ and it was so nice to see you again.

A great man. One who wore his heart on his sleeve, but at the same time was always aware of his own heart beat. Parky had the Yorkshire grit of the working man / woman, and the insight to pursue his guests Life with compassion and humour.
I really relate to this interview, thank you Sir Michael for being honest and authentic about your struggles with alcohol. This is almost a mirror of what happened in our house, with me - gently at first and then more assertively - pointing out the damage alcohol was doing and that it needed to go. We did it and we've never looked back. That's not to say it's easy, it's hard to change, there have been good weeks and bad weeks and it is exactly what Michael called it - a drug that happens to be legal.
As a young child I started watching late night talk shows starting with Ernie Kovaks, Steve Allen, Jack Parr, Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers, BUT now I am so happy to have found the work of Michael Parkinson’s. Love his interviews, love the Australian people and the British TV. Real entertainment with style.
I'm from Yorkshire and grew up watching parky, what a brilliant and humble man , he got the best out of his guests, he'll never bettered and sadly missed !!!

I was amazed to find this. Sometimes I would not look forward to the interviews but then found them fascinating. Nobody, but nobody, interviewed like he did. The term 'Parky' was a compliment.
freddy starr v Ali was my favourite interview on Parky. Michael thanks for many years of the fantastic Interviews and wonderful memories. God Bless you Sir x
It's not just famous people. I remember when I was 16, working at the local gas station, and my dentist came in for a fill up. In his clinic he was the most confident man I had ever seen, but out in the real world he was so soft spoken and shy.
What a beautifully honest interview, enjoyed you immensely sir Michael parkinson you gave us so much joy, rest in peace michael and God bless your wife and family. ❤❤❤
the legend that is 'PARKIE' i couldn't wait for saturday nights to see his show. he knew how to interview and how to lead his guest into a question then just sit back and let it happen. he didn't intervene too much and he knew how to keep it going. a true professional at his trade. miss him so much. no one will surpass his talent. God Bless Him.
Very lovely interview Michael Parkinson was a great man Britain has lost a national treasure I hope they realize he was a extrradairy man and I always think of him so fondly because he made me laugh so much and have so wonderful memories sitting beside my parents watching his Saturday program ❤
It's a brave younger TV journalist who embarks on an interview with Sir Michael Parkinson. But Skavlan need not have worried. Parky is down to Earth, engagingly honest and forthright. Also a great entertainer in his own sphere. As a retired newspaper man and radio broadcaster/producer I tried for years to have a sit down with Parky but it never clicked at the right time, even though he was in Australia often. As the fates would have it, I was often in Europe when he was back in my home watching cricket. I have the utmost professional and personal respect for Sir Michael. When I finally was trusted to be sent out to interview well-known actors, movie stars, directors and other 'celebrities' I often used to think, '...what would Parky ask', however, it was oddly, one of Parky's most popular, recurring guests, Michael Caine who gave me a wise tip when talking about acting. He said it was vital to listen to the other actors and re-act, even though the scene might have been rehearsed and ten takes already done. A famous Australian character actor, John Meillon used as his mantra: “Concentrate, really concentrate; listen, really listen.” This was also Parky's secret. He used his famous memory, with research, and plotted a conversation. As another famous actor once said, "Never let them catch you acting!". The only problem I have with this video is that for some bizarre reason someone decided to edit this video so that we hear Parky’s comments about his drinking problem twice. Such a strange thing to do; almost as if the producers were trying to wring as much controversy out of this appearance as possible. If that was, in fact, the case. The person or persons responsible should be ashamed. Not so much so, if it was merely sloppy editing. Thank you for this upload. Cheers, BH
What a truly remarkable man Michael Parkinson is 👏👏👏👏 he is definitely the greatest talkshow host ever, such an interesting bloke to listen to, a top Yorkshire lad 👏👏👏👏👍
I grew up watching you Parky. You have interviewed some true legends and now you are one of those legends in my opinion. I wish we still had people like you on our screens, giving real interviews and having real conversations. I’d love to be sat next to you at my dinner table! Fascinating interview! 👌🏼💜
I got to be enthralled with Parkinson in the early 1960ies - reading his sports column in the Sunday Times - assiduously !! Not many people know he was a cricketer for Barnsley Cricket Club, an opener with Dicky Bird, & had a Yorkshire trial with Geoffrey Boycott ( who he once kept out of the Barnsley CC team, after scoring a Century and a 50 in consecutive matches !! )
I was 13 in 1963 and living in Manchester, Grenada being the local TV station. So I hardly remember a time when Parky wasn't on television. I remember him first as a local presenter of topical news items. His Northern accent (albeit Yorkshire!) was like a breath of fresh air after listening to so many Southerners with their "posh" accents on TV! It was a time of social change as up to then only daft seeming comics had northern accents on TV.
Unfortunately the 'social change' you refer to has ruined this country. Everything has been sliding down ever since. Education, manners, morals, dress standards, crime etc. So sad. I will die sad at what this country has become in my lifetime.
I remember the theme tune and settling down late night viewing (not really, but it felt it to me) on Saturday with a great thrill of anticipation and excitement.bit says something that s kid could watch in those days and I loved, loved, loved it all. Especially the great old film stars Michael Parkinson was the greatest interviewer ever and I am so glad I lived through the Golden age of television.
I remember shopping next to Mary Parkinson in a small boutique in Windsor, nr Windsor Castle, in late 70s/early 80s.. I think I was shopping for disco roller skates that I used to skate up & down Windsor Castle's 3 mile Long Walk! Happy days.
@@richardl772 It sure is. It's so much more enjoyable for an audience when the energy 's relaxed. Really like the setup with everyone at the same level, eye to eye. Not like American shows where the host is perched behind a desk.
Only just spotted this interview. So so interesting as I used to watch his Parkinson programme on Sat. Nights and saw so many of his legendary interviews. Remember the Mohammed Ali and George Best ones. A true Yorkshire man with a passion for so many things and the best in his job at interviewing. Sad to hear of his struggle with alcohol but thankfully he overcame it .
I loved his interview with James Stewart, my favourite actor, he read a poem he had written about his dog Beau that had recently passed, I cried so hard, I hard recently lost my black Labrador Dinah and it really connected. Bless him and "It's a wonderful life", is still the family Christmas film. Party is wrong about Best being Uniteds saviour, Bobby Charlton wears that crown in my world.
Congratulations to Parkinson on coming out so honestly. People don't realise that alcoholism is the worst drug addiction because the drug is so socially accepted and expected. NOT the quantity you drink so much as the regularity with which. Anyone who can not endure more than 72 hours without a tipple has to concede that they have a problem; like it or not. You might say what about bingers?? Not quite the same thing and not as abstemious as they'd like to make out between the uncontrollable binges and the lost hours. It is a separate problem, not just the habit of the usual, "every now and then". "Mine's a sherry" says Auntie, "No, not that little glass, a white wine glass, the same as at lunchtime. I have to have it with my soup, the doctor said so; it's good for my heart."
It’s a shame seeing how Much he aged between this interview and here now just after his passing, He really aged 😢 RIP Sir Michael, Favourite EVER Interviewer EVER!!! ❤
Parky was one of the greatest - his interviews with the Hollywood greats, his unique and modest style. And sadly the BBC wiped some of his greatest interviews. Thanks Parky, so many happy memories from the 1970’s and 80’s and 90’s and the 2000’s.

Such a strange thing to do; almost as if the producers were trying to wring as much controversy out of this appearance as possible.
If that was, in fact, the case. The person or persons responsible should be ashamed. Not so much so, if it was merely sloppy editing.
Thank you for this upload. Cheers, BH
I've never liked Parkinson but I have a new respect for him, watching this. I do sometimes forget he's actually a sports journalist.
Excellent interview. Thank you.
What a truly remarkable man Michael Parkinson is 👏👏👏👏 he is definitely the greatest talkshow host ever, such an interesting bloke to listen to, a top Yorkshire lad 👏👏👏👏👍
Jaesen Knowles Justa shame about the Yorkshire bit, as well all know the best thing to come out of Yorkshire is the road to Lancashire. 🌹🌹🌹
Jennifer Holden Opinions vary 🤔
Jaesen Knowles But facts remain.
Jennifer Holden Yes facts remain 👏👏 The best thing out of Lancashire is the road to Yorkshire, facts remain.
@@jenniferholden9397 - silly remark.
Great interview. Good ambience and some really frank admissions from Parky. Well done.
Grande Michael, so many wonderful interviews.
Great interiew.
Pia Tjelta is beautiful. Really. Never even heard of her before.
This man is like a link back to legends!
And interestingly he was friends with a lot of them!
Lovely lovely humble man. You’ll be much loved and missed forever. RIP.
really enjoyed the interview ,thanks
Parky, what a lovely man.
I grew up watching you Parky. You have interviewed some true legends and now you are one of those legends in my opinion. I wish we still had people like you on our screens, giving real interviews and having real conversations. I’d love to be sat next to you at my dinner table! Fascinating interview! 👌🏼💜
He wouldn’t want to sit next to you unless you had celebrity status .
the Norwegian Parky interviewing the British Parky, how wonderful.
recipe for a dreary 20 minutes but on the plus side his hair has improved
Yeah, Skavlan, the next Michael Parkinson for sure.
Fantastic interview. Best interviewer that the BBC and ITV had.
Happy days.
I loved getting home on a Saturday night and watching his show, all the biggest and best wanted to be on his show. RIP.
James Cagney was a terrific actor.I think Parky interviewed him twice.
Such a wonderful interview by a wonderful talk show host
Agreed, great to see someone allow someone with something to say just talk.
@@richardl772 It sure is. It's so much more enjoyable for an audience when the energy 's relaxed. Really like the setup with everyone at the same level, eye to eye. Not like American shows where the host is perched behind a desk.
A real legend...... loved his interviews especially with Muhammad Ali and many more
aww he adores his wife so special to find that love in life x
Maybe Aye and maybe Och Aye ..... ( Scottish saying ).
@@taraalan1131 never heard of it and I'm Scottish. x
@@janeyd5280 Maybe confined to certain localities. Meant ‘ No chance ‘ .
I found his comments about his wife to be generic and cliche. Men who talk in that way are often cheaters.
What a fantastic chat show host you are: intelligent relaxed and very personable. Its a shame we don't have this in the UK. Your English is superb. ❤
Still a great interviewer. Rest in peace Michael. You made Yorkshire proud.
Exceptional interview and dialogue.
Very honest Michael to have shared this part of your personal life. RIP🧡
Great interview and so sad he’s gone.
Thanks so much for posting.
Bless him a real gent the likes of which we will never see again, RIP Sir Michael
It’s a shame seeing how Much he aged between this interview and here now just after his passing, He really aged 😢 RIP Sir Michael, Favourite EVER Interviewer EVER!!! ❤
Everyone ages, that's life
Parky was one of the greatest - his interviews with the Hollywood greats, his unique and modest style. And sadly the BBC wiped some of his greatest interviews. Thanks Parky, so many happy memories from the 1970’s and 80’s and 90’s and the 2000’s.
