Totally agree...used to sit there with my Grandma & brothers ( 8,10&13)...& even at that age loved watching & being fully thrilled at the guest he had on on a Saturday evening...nobody comes close & he was right, there is no mystery anymore due to social media. It's the same 'c' - lebrity people doing the rounds on every show these days. He was classic . People learned a lot from Parky.
God time really does fly, my favourite decade would be the seventies, love watching all the old shows, but TV back then was great , swap shop, on Saturday morning, God now it's all cookery programs, very little Saturday night variety on now, if you don't like reality shows, cooking programs, and you have to pay a fortune to watch the premier League, then you're screwed
Very true John. My grandmother was a huge fan and couldn't wait to see the show being broadcast every Saturday night. He ended up getting that great nickname 'parky'. The best British TV interviewer ever to me. He carried out so much research on his guests beforehand which showed and, together with that, added a little humour too. His only interview which didn't work out was that one with Meg Ryan. She wasn't too helpful in answering the questions. Not an easy person to interview!

To see how engaged the others were listening is amazing to see, a master craftsman talking about his work is enthralling. I really relate to this interview, thank you Sir Michael for being honest and authentic about your struggles with alcohol. This is almost a mirror of what happened in our house, with me - gently at first and then more assertively - pointing out the damage alcohol was doing and that it needed to go. We did it and we've never looked back. That's not to say it's easy, it's hard to change, there have been good weeks and bad weeks and it is exactly what Michael called it - a drug that happens to be legal.

I was amazed to find this. Sometimes I would not look forward to the interviews but then found them fascinating. Nobody, but nobody, interviewed like he did. The term 'Parky' was a compliment.
Congratulations to Parkinson on coming out so honestly. People don't realise that alcoholism is the worst drug addiction because the drug is so socially accepted and expected. NOT the quantity you drink so much as the regularity with which. Anyone who can not endure more than 72 hours without a tipple has to concede that they have a problem; like it or not. You might say what about bingers?? Not quite the same thing and not as abstemious as they'd like to make out between the uncontrollable binges and the lost hours. It is a separate problem, not just the habit of the usual, "every now and then". "Mine's a sherry" says Auntie, "No, not that little glass, a white wine glass, the same as at lunchtime. I have to have it with my soup, the doctor said so; it's good for my heart."
It's not just famous people. I remember when I was 16, working at the local gas station, and my dentist came in for a fill up. In his clinic he was the most confident man I had ever seen, but out in the real world he was so soft spoken and shy.
It’s a shame seeing how Much he aged between this interview and here now just after his passing, He really aged 😢 RIP Sir Michael, Favourite EVER Interviewer EVER!!! ❤
As a young child I started watching late night talk shows starting with Ernie Kovaks, Steve Allen, Jack Parr, Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers, BUT now I am so happy to have found the work of Michael Parkinson’s. Love his interviews, love the Australian people and the British TV. Real entertainment with style.
Very pertinent point about an audience gasping when someone like James Cagney was introduced. Today audiences would know everything and more about Cagney, his life having been everywhere on social media, with not a few 'viral' stories.
I can't believe anyone would think there are fewer interesting people to interview today. Just as many- it requires a different approach, and the discussion is different, just as interesting though
What a beautifully honest interview, enjoyed you immensely sir Michael parkinson you gave us so much joy, rest in peace michael and God bless your wife and family. ❤❤❤
I wish my partner would give up drinking. I mean my ex partner. I tried for over a decade to help but in the end I got custody of the children and told her to choose me or the alcohol. She became an alcoholic. Broke my heart.
It's very hard to live and love a alcoholic my mother was one when she had more than her days worth she was very violent I am 73 the pain is still with me
@@christinebories2446 yeah. I understand. My father was lovely when he was sober. Unfortunately he won't sober often and was a horrible violent drunk. To this day, when someone leans in to talk to me with any hint of alcohol on their breath, I feel that childhood terror rise up inside me
Take it from me, she did not become an alcoholic you do not drink yourself into alcoholism, alcohol/alcoholism is the symptom of something deeper/emotional. Look at it this way before anyone has there first drink there sober.

@@richardl772 It sure is. It's so much more enjoyable for an audience when the energy 's relaxed. Really like the setup with everyone at the same level, eye to eye. Not like American shows where the host is perched behind a desk.
Only just spotted this interview. So so interesting as I used to watch his Parkinson programme on Sat. Nights and saw so many of his legendary interviews. Remember the Mohammed Ali and George Best ones. A true Yorkshire man with a passion for so many things and the best in his job at interviewing. Sad to hear of his struggle with alcohol but thankfully he overcame it .
I got to be enthralled with Parkinson in the early 1960ies - reading his sports column in the Sunday Times - assiduously !! Not many people know he was a cricketer for Barnsley Cricket Club, an opener with Dicky Bird, & had a Yorkshire trial with Geoffrey Boycott ( who he once kept out of the Barnsley CC team, after scoring a Century and a 50 in consecutive matches !! )
@@brianmansfield666 You're being far too harsh. All the TV back then was sexist - I've just been watching the US What's My Line and even the powerful career women on the panel were being sexist to the guests. He came from a Yorkshire mining village. I don't think he was any worse or any better than the average journalist at that time.
@@tullochgorum6323 his chat format was the best...right time and place to get all the golden era actors plus push for Billy Connolly etc..and usually guests weren't obviously selling anything
Skavlan is the worlds best interviewer. A conversationalist at heart but with the intelligence to keep quiet when he needs to. Makes it look simple, which it’s not.
It's a brave younger TV journalist who embarks on an interview with Sir Michael Parkinson. But Skavlan need not have worried. Parky is down to Earth, engagingly honest and forthright. Also a great entertainer in his own sphere. As a retired newspaper man and radio broadcaster/producer I tried for years to have a sit down with Parky but it never clicked at the right time, even though he was in Australia often. As the fates would have it, I was often in Europe when he was back in my home watching cricket. I have the utmost professional and personal respect for Sir Michael. When I finally was trusted to be sent out to interview well-known actors, movie stars, directors and other 'celebrities' I often used to think, '...what would Parky ask', however, it was oddly, one of Parky's most popular, recurring guests, Michael Caine who gave me a wise tip when talking about acting. He said it was vital to listen to the other actors and re-act, even though the scene might have been rehearsed and ten takes already done. A famous Australian character actor, John Meillon used as his mantra: “Concentrate, really concentrate; listen, really listen.” This was also Parky's secret. He used his famous memory, with research, and plotted a conversation. As another famous actor once said, "Never let them catch you acting!". The only problem I have with this video is that for some bizarre reason someone decided to edit this video so that we hear Parky’s comments about his drinking problem twice. Such a strange thing to do; almost as if the producers were trying to wring as much controversy out of this appearance as possible. If that was, in fact, the case. The person or persons responsible should be ashamed. Not so much so, if it was merely sloppy editing. Thank you for this upload. Cheers, BH
I spent 25 years on Fleet Street and the drinking culture was everywhere I have a friend that turned into an alcoholic and committed suicide. I am very careful with alcohol to this day
yes big drinkers,,, A journalist said if you have a drinking problem in this profession then you have a real problem,, Parky had some difficult interviews, Ali was one and the booze must have affected his job,, You dont get away with mother nature
@@mikeoglen6848 If you need advice, then you recognise that there’s a problem. I think that your GP can prescribe something to stop the heavy drinking - anti - abuse or something which sounds like that. Good luck x
I was 13 in 1963 and living in Manchester, Grenada being the local TV station. So I hardly remember a time when Parky wasn't on television. I remember him first as a local presenter of topical news items. His Northern accent (albeit Yorkshire!) was like a breath of fresh air after listening to so many Southerners with their "posh" accents on TV! It was a time of social change as up to then only daft seeming comics had northern accents on TV.
Unfortunately the 'social change' you refer to has ruined this country. Everything has been sliding down ever since. Education, manners, morals, dress standards, crime etc. So sad. I will die sad at what this country has become in my lifetime.
I remember the theme tune and settling down late night viewing (not really, but it felt it to me) on Saturday with a great thrill of anticipation and excitement.bit says something that s kid could watch in those days and I loved, loved, loved it all. Especially the great old film stars Michael Parkinson was the greatest interviewer ever and I am so glad I lived through the Golden age of television.

... because sharing is fundamental to belonging, and belonging is core to being a sane and productive human
Andrew I concur with your sentiment.
Australia 2.06 am
Great interview, I've got a growing respect for Skavlan
A real legend...... loved his interviews especially with Muhammad Ali and many more
This man is like a link back to legends!
And interestingly he was friends with a lot of them!
Skavlan you are still my favourite interviewer. You seem genuinely interested in your guests.
Thank you so much for that!
He had all the best guests. Far fewer interesting ppl to interview anymore.
He desperately wanted Frank Sinatra on his show but never got him.
I can't believe anyone would think there are fewer interesting people to interview today. Just as many- it requires a different approach, and the discussion is different, just as interesting though
@@grahambarnes7325 Most are not as interesting and beautiful as Ingrid Bergman was. He interviewed her in 1973
Best interviewer that has ever been on the planet
And Australia had Andrew Denton with his show “Enough Rope “. Recently we’ve had repeats of Parky from the 1980s. I got to love them all over again.
Great interview and so many great stories from Michael, he was a Legend. RIP.
Great interview. Good ambience and some really frank admissions from Parky. Well done.
She must have too deep pain inside..parkie didn't, so gave up easier.
To this day, when someone leans in to talk to me with any hint of alcohol on their breath, I feel that childhood terror rise up inside me
@@sallyrile7601 yes. She has very deep pain.
From childhood abuse.
Things you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.
Take it from me, she did not become an alcoholic you do not drink yourself into alcoholism, alcohol/alcoholism is the symptom of something deeper/emotional. Look at it this way before anyone has there first drink there sober.
freddy starr v Ali was my favourite interview on Parky. Michael thanks for many years of the fantastic Interviews and wonderful memories. God Bless you Sir x
Excellent interview. Thank you.
Glad he called alcohol what it is, a drug!
@Richard soma Congratulations Richard! I wish a couple of my extended family members were able to recognize that they had a problem before it was too late. My hats off to you, sir👍
They will know they have a problem....bottom line,,,,you only change if you want to....leave them to it..they will reach a conclusion..pray if religion is your thing...if not remember the person you loved at some point...

Lovely lovely humble man. You’ll be much loved and missed forever. RIP.
I've never liked Parkinson but I have a new respect for him, watching this. I do sometimes forget he's actually a sports journalist.
I loved his interview with James Stewart, my favourite actor, he read a poem he had written about his dog Beau that had recently passed, I cried so hard, I hard recently lost my black Labrador Dinah and it really connected. Bless him and "It's a wonderful life", is still the family Christmas film. Party is wrong about Best being Uniteds saviour, Bobby Charlton wears that crown in my world.
Very lovely interview Michael Parkinson was a great man Britain has lost a national treasure I hope they realize he was a extrradairy man and I always think of him so fondly because he made me laugh so much and have so wonderful memories sitting beside my parents watching his Saturday program ❤
Two great interviewers having a fascinating, respectful, insightful conversation.
aww he adores his wife so special to find that love in life x
Maybe Aye and maybe Och Aye ..... ( Scottish saying ).
@@taraalan1131 never heard of it and I'm Scottish. x
@@janeyd5280 Maybe confined to certain localities. Meant ‘ No chance ‘ .
I found his comments about his wife to be generic and cliche. Men who talk in that way are often cheaters.
Brilliant interview ......... Brilliant guest!
Such a wonderful interview by a wonderful talk show host
Agreed, great to see someone allow someone with something to say just talk.
@@richardl772 It sure is. It's so much more enjoyable for an audience when the energy 's relaxed. Really like the setup with everyone at the same level, eye to eye. Not like American shows where the host is perched behind a desk.
Grande Michael, so many wonderful interviews.
Great interiew.
Pia Tjelta is beautiful. Really. Never even heard of her before.
the Norwegian Parky interviewing the British Parky, how wonderful.
recipe for a dreary 20 minutes but on the plus side his hair has improved
Yeah, Skavlan, the next Michael Parkinson for sure.
Fantastic interview. Best interviewer that the BBC and ITV had.
Bless him a real gent the likes of which we will never see again, RIP Sir Michael
By far the best interviewer we have ever seen, a true legend, number one....
4.30 Parkinson looking not unlike Paul McCartney.
Well spotted, he looked exactly like him for a second
Paul hasn’t gone grey yet 🤔
Wow you are right !!
Yes, more so as they've both aged.
Yes...straight away
Exceptional interview and dialogue.
Not many people know he was a cricketer for Barnsley Cricket Club, an opener with Dicky Bird, & had a Yorkshire trial with Geoffrey Boycott ( who he once kept out of the Barnsley CC team, after scoring a Century and a 50 in consecutive matches !! )
Parky, self effacing and lack of ego in stark contrast to the modern crop of UK interviewers who want to make all roads lead back to themselves.
Great observation. Couldn't have been said better
he's got a massive ego and a no class sexist prick go find his Helen Mirren interview for proof... he's lucky he wasnt hauled up during #metoo
He is excellent
Thank you so much for that guys, we truly appreciate it!
Cheers, BH
I spent 25 years on Fleet Street and the drinking culture was everywhere
I have a friend that turned into an alcoholic and committed suicide. I am very careful with alcohol to this day
Do you have any advice you could give on alcohol?
yes big drinkers,,, A journalist said if you have a drinking problem in this profession then you have a real problem,, Parky had some difficult interviews, Ali was one and the booze must have affected his job,, You dont get away with mother nature
I am careful too , I dont spill a drop .
@@mikeoglen6848 If you need advice, then you recognise that there’s a problem. I think that your GP can prescribe something to stop the heavy drinking - anti - abuse or something which sounds like that. Good luck x
@@taraalan1131 Thanks Tara but I think I'm OK but I realise you have to be careful with it.
Best TV interviewer, at least of this type -- probably overall. Always an education; often hilarious.
I loved getting home on a Saturday night and watching his show, all the biggest and best wanted to be on his show. RIP.
James Cagney was a terrific actor.I think Parky interviewed him twice.
The King of Interviews 🌹Thank you Michael 🌹
