    Honestly I think the digital photos looked amazing, however when comparing to the film counterparts I felt the digitals lacked a bit of texture or feel in a sense, I feel like digital does what it’s supposed to do to perfection but film takes a few more liberties when it comes to the results. Overall loved the video and all the photos turned out really good and interesting 👌👌

    One thing medium format has that the Fuji apc-s can’t ever do is the depth of field transition. Medium format has a much smoother transition area where smaller chips have a more abrupt transition. So depending on the look you want this is either a good or bad thing lol. Cheers on a well done video

    Even if they were identical, I would miss the process of shooting, developing, and scanning film. It’s a whole experience. I have nothing against digital cameras.

    You are very consistent. That’s what makes it nearly indistinguishable for me to tell if it was film vs digital. If these were unlabeled and you shopped out the imperfections of film I genuinely couldn’t tell the difference. You have a look that is consistent and I ain’t talking presets baby.

    It's hard to tell the difference on a UA-cam video since the biggest benefit of film over digital is the unlimited colors but those unlimited colors have been transfered to RGB pixels here anyway, but even having said that, and even being a huge fan and proponent of the xt4, these film shots are outstanding! Hands>tools. great work man

    Great video, killing it as always! Definitely one of my favorite and exciting up and coming photographers and one of the best ones I see on UA-cam, can never praise your work enough. You need to get yourself known to the mags like Dazed and Confused and Another, you'd be a great fit in those publications, its time for the world to know your work! Both mediums will create magic, in the end it just boils down to preference. They both produce crazy images! Great stuff!

    First video I've seen of yours, definitely won't be the last. You got a subscriber. I love how unfussed but striking your portraits are. I think my favourite is the 10:16 - the others are great and all but that one has such a feel like he's a world away, lost in himself. As an X-Pro3 shooter and Fujifilm fan I've still honestly got to give it to the rz67 for overall image quality, but again it's amazing how close the APS-C Fuji is getting. For motion in portraiture Gordon Parks did pretty well in his fashion shoots experimenting with slow film, Ernst Haas also really pushed it to an impressionistic vibe. Anyway, thanks again - great images and you're leaps ahead of most photography vloggers out there.

    Killer video look from the Xt4! To get even closer to film on digital you can try the Pentax 645Z. Then you'd be comparing like for like (almost) as far as format. I do client shoots with that and my Fuji XPro II and it works amazingly well to cover an and to end look and vibe. You did a great job matching exposures and treatments between the two but wow, those outdoor film shots were hard to beat. I feel like those show the separation between the two systems best.
    What I've learned from the 645Z is that it isn't necessarily "film" that get's that look people react to, it the medium format. Medium format film or digital seems to be the magic system!

  • @dan_s_higginson
    @dan_s_higginson 3 роки тому +1

    Great video and shots. Regarding the reason the shots look different. Shallow depth of field isn’t the medium format look. It’s the compression from longer focal lengths combined with the wider view. Even when you shoot with a stopped down medium format camera it looks different. That’s what it is. Medium format doesn’t have shallower depth of field than any other sensor (or film) size, they don’t directly change depth of field, it’s all focal length and distance to subject and f stop. The bigger film just gives you more canvas so you get a perceived wider angle of view.
    So if you shoot a tight head shot the 85mm 1.2 on full frame the depth of field and compression will look similar, but without the wider view.

    • @barneyarthur4615

    Love the images. For the red light look on film, give Redscale film a go, no need for gelles lighting. I shoot it on my 67 and 645 and love to look. It makes for a good black and white scan too.
    As for the comparison, I don't think the choice of location showed the benefits of 67 over APSC. The shallow dof on the head shots, yes, however, where it really becomes noticeable is in the separation/isolation of the subject from the background. 110mm isolation with a 50mm fields of view. Whereas the Fujifilm is giving you a 35mm isolation with a 50mm field of view equivalent.

    I have the Mitakon and it's gorgeous. I wanted a manual lens that goes with my XPRO3 and its style of shooting (especially streets) and also because I despise the infinite electronic focus ring on the Fuji's. Unfortunately my unit has a bit of wabbling so the focusing at .95 is not very precise and it sometimes shifts. I would have preferred a clicky aperture ring.
    Overall its lower price, the beautiful bokeh it has and the fact that it's sexy make me forget its flaws.

    I never understand why people talk about "the crazy depth of field of medium format". Because most lenses on medium format don't go wider than F4-2.8-2.4 (some exceptions) and those lenses on say, a 6x7 film camera give you more or less the equivalent depth of field of a F2, f1.4 and F1.2 lens on a full frame digital or 35mm camera. And guess what, those lenses are mass produced. So there is no magical depth of field on medium format.
    Now, the quality of bokeh, the transition of focus, the tonality and color of 120film. Those are things you can discuss on. And those are the reasons I enjoy working with my Pentax 67 and other bodies, next to my pro digital kit. But if you really want crazy depth of field and truly a complete different look, go for large format and with fast lenses (fast.. for large format). You can take full body shots and the model will look like it's floating in front of a cloud.

    • @barneyarthur4615
      @barneyarthur4615  3 роки тому

      If only I could afford 8x10. I think it’s more the compression that people like when they talk about depth of field of 120 compared 35mm

    • @caleidoo
      @caleidoo 3 роки тому

      @@barneyarthur4615 Compression is mostly caused by distance to subject, not so much by lens or format.
      For large format, you can always use the Brenizer Method: use a small camera with a fast semi-telephoto lens (say, 50 or 80 f1.8) and stitch together images taken at max aperture, at medium distance. The result is you now have a wide field of view with a shallow depth of field. Basically what large format can offer.

      Wen we talk about DOF - there are several factors to consider as u so rightly suggest - as a pro for 35 yrs - I would suggest the vast majority YT'rs of this generation current company excepted - have not even used a MF, don't shoot professionally and are there for the likes and content grabbing 'free' stuff sent to them for review. As a prolific user of MF and LF for over 35 yrs I can tell you we don't look for DOF other than what is right for the shot- and in most cases this is F8 - we look for separation. When I shot on RZ hundreds of years ago I often used a 500mm APO for the fashion work simply as it would give about three inches of sharp focus in front of a full length model and an out of focus background - usually a building to give the viewer a point of focus - all this nonsense about lenses with apertures of 0. this and 0. that have little place in the real world of photography. Probably good for wildlife where fast shutters need a wider aperture but little else. So the difference in formats is 'what it gives you in totality' not just one thing -as you say - DOF doesn't even come to it.

      @@barneyarthur4615 Hey are you aware of LR limitations with the Fuji RAW files? There "worm" artifacts on the pictures are caused by poor demosaicing of the X-Trans sensor raw files done by LR. That's why fuji shooters usually works with Capture one or Irident X Transformer + LR. Don`t want to bother but maybe it could be the case you didn't know that.
      Great video, anyway. I was relentlessly looking for a lens for fuji that could help me getting a medium format look with my fuji X. I just love these full body portraits with shallow DOF that you can get. Just by coincidence I was looking for the 35mm f0.95 from 7artisans just before your video. Thanks mate for this.
