1:05:32 im hunting from the ground without a blind, treating it like spring gobbler and finding good natural cover to setup in. Allows for the most mobility, and deer absolutely get within feet of you. Im using a crossbow though which makes it a touch easier to get the shot off
Very cool stuff for sure!! Being a Minnesota guy myself he’s right on about how the state deer herd is crap because of wolves, APR is gone in SE MN because of insurance company/dnr BS. I’m one of those MN trucks you’ll see in Kansas and Iowa. I apply every year & play the point game because it’s so much better!! Thanks for fantastic info as usual!!
I bet you Pat sold some earth ponds after that pod cast. That was helpful because I was thinking about adding some small water holes to my property and that sealed the deal. Going to pick up 50 gallon rubbermaid tub at tractor supply tomorrow on my way to OHIO!
41:46 at least with regular modern trail cameras (not cell cameras) you have to go check the camera in the woods. You have to learn how to not disturb deer while doing it, and no matter how good you are at not disturbing them, unless youre using historical data, or at least letting them soak until you hunt the spot in the fall, youre informing mature animals to avoid the area during shooting light most likely. Cell cameras take all of the out. Set it and enjoy it straight to your phone up until, and even while, youre in the tree.
"How do you deal with dogs Pat?" Pat - "shoot'em, trapp'em, snare'em, whatever it takes." I freakin love his honesty. Been a fan of Pat since the prime time bucks days.
I'm like Jeff went to 300 Gallon tanks ,have several 110 gallon tanks less than $100 at TSC and I don't sink them in the ground, has worked great the last 5 years.
35:23 between baiting, crossbows, and cell cameras. The biggest beyond a doubt advantage thats changed hunting is cell cameras. Want to be a better hunter with minimal effort? Youd think baiting and crossbows. But the least effort and money required is cell cameras. Take the $2000 youd spend on one good pile of corn. Buy a bucket load of cell cameras, toss them out one weekend in the spring while gobbler hunting, dont touch them again till the season has gotten going and you know precisely where to be. Sit on the couch the whole rest of the time and just watch pictures come in. In combination with baiting, its game over you literally beed 1-2 weekends before the season to know precisely which buck youre going to kill and know precisely where youre going to do it. Get you a cheap bow, with a 30 pack of knock off rages. Practice a couple weekends over the summer, snag a blind, call yourself the greatest come rifle camp cause you’re tagged out each year.
1: 21: 50 seconds in I can hear Jeff Sturgis now losing his shit that you put a water trough and a food source together that equals a number 16 on scale. You're fired
The barking like a dog is definitely a killer tip don’t know why I didn’t think of that myself with them being able to run dogs here in VA. One time after dark I got caught on my stick halfway down the tree, a bunch of deer came in right under me, after awhile I tried to play coyotes howling on my phone because I didn’t trust myself to make it and they didn’t give 2 shits and eventually picked me out and it was the loudest I have ever heard deer running away in my life…😂
Thanks guys I caught an earlier episode and I want to quote, “The hunting industry's own actions demonstrate that hunting television and hunting social media reduces access causing an increase in cost of access”. Draw results are so low that what was once fun isn’t anymore. It’s become a money driven sport for the rich. So sad we live in this me first selfish society. Social media has absolutely badly hurt why we do this in the first place. Thoughts?
@@toddstewart9437 Sir, that is correct. Massive inflated ego's. Toughest guys I know who hunt are those that need no spotlight or glory. They provide for the fam as you mention.
28:45 i dont own enough ground to hunt on, and since i hunt Pennsylvania, i cant bait or feed on public ground. That being said however, because the state forest land i hunt is reliably barely hunted in archery season, and its well over 100k of absolutely premium big woods mountain habitat. I know exactly what you mean by the switch that flips come late august early September. All spring and summer its just running non cell cameras and scouting more land, which requires a lot of work but seems to come with less stress less focus on just one animal. But once the summer is dwindling its suddenly who cares about the abundance of nice bucks, heres the two or three glimpses of big bucks ive had here and here and there all summer, time to dial in as much as possible and the stress about not getting the desired intel immediately just skyrockets!
What’s funny is if you ask don higgins he’d say hunting over water is a waste of time and deer get 70% of their hydration through food. I remember someone asked him this specific question at a seminar a few years ago
I still call bullshit on your claim of nonresidents footing 70% of license revenue in Ohio. Even when nonresidents paid stupid tax on either sex tags to harvest early season anterless deer, the revenue wasn't near 70%.
@@HUNTRPOD, no need to call. ODNR publication 5063 details the license numbers and I can do simple math. For the 2022-2023 season (the last available data) non residents paid around 48% . Hardly the 70% you keep claiming.
Pat was buzzed up pretty good for this one
Thanks!
So I was working on my bow, arrows and other stuff in the basement last night. Listening to the pod.....awesome just awesome
That’s the life man
My favorite podcast. I had a fawn born in my field this year only stayed one day, gone that night. Cool opportunity to show the kids how it happens

Feeding egos instead of feeding friends and family.

That was unexpectedly great.
50:53 I know ive killed a lot more of my deer in archery during afternoon/evening sits, than i have morning sits.
What’s the difference in pouring corn on the ground and burying a water tank into the ground? Is that not accomplishing the same goal?
small game hunters hammer timber blow whole sections out in Iowa and Nebraska its wild the dedication
I would still like to watch the outdoor channel on tv if it wasn’t so expensive to have
If you have a smart TV it's one of the free channels on mine
Beer 🍺time.

He's right. It might be a waste of time for Don Higgins.

Call the DNR it’s public information. It’s because no ohio landowner has to buy a hunting license
