I'm a writer. Story-telling is an art. That doesn't mean it doesn't have rules. You have to MASTER the rules in order to be able to break them effectively. These trap rap mumble dudes don't know the rules, so they don't break them with purpose. The thing about rap is it's more like painting than writing. It can be impressionist, it can be surreal. The rules aren't quantifiable, but the legends have spent 40+ years exploring the boundaries and laying the foundation...then comes this generation and boils it down to compressed beats and rhyming without rhythm or purpose. I get Too Short's argument, that we all hate our kids' music. And frankly, there was shit rap before. But this is different. This is a corruption of the art form. Producers aren't creating art, they're creating aural skinner boxes. It's a psychological trap. Create a simple pattern, repeat ad naseum. You ever worked retail and you gotta listen to that same loop of 1 hour worth of songs for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and one of those songs you hated to deal for some reason catches in your mind and suddenly you like it? That's hip hop now. Pound the same repetitive BS into your head until you accept it, because psychologically, it's the only way to cope.

R.A. is giving a good argument but what he should have said was "fine that these dudes are getting money, fine if most people like their music, but DON'T call it RAP" because rapping and emceeing is a specific and sacred talent to R.A. and to say that current mainstream "rappers" are on par with legit performers who honed a craft is unfair. If people bought a copy of R.A. strumming a guitar poorly for an hour it wouldn't make him a better rock musician than Jimmy Page, a master at his craft. That's the real point R.A. was trying to make, and Vlad knows it and was straight up being petty to win the argument in spite of that. In my assessment.

If (for example) someone famous now sells a book and it sells more copies with Amazon and all the marketing we have now than a classic from the past doesn't mean it's better or even close. When you rate someone as a rapper you can't put it on how catchy the song is, most of that falls on the beat the producer. You have to rate them on their writing and style/execution.

Im an OG, and I'm 37. I came up in the golden era of hip hop. I still listen to Nas, AZ, Mobb Deep,Chino XL, Pete Rock, Krs One, Biggie, Tupac, Redman, Kool G Rap, etc. But I also like the new artist such as 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Dae Dae, Migos, Gucci Mane, Rich Homie Quan,Kendrick Lamar, etc. I listen to all, and I don't hate on the old or new generation because I listen to both. If you're a hip hop fan and if you have an ear for music, you would appreciate both. I do believe that the golden era of hip hop was and is better than this generation of music, but don't overlook these new artist, because they do produce good music. You just have to have an open ear.

Thing is music has been geared toward 12-17 year olds since the 1950s when the studio execs realized kids were spending their parents money. There was a study on the music industry and studio execs tailor their product, tweak their music to systematically sound like songs that were successful before. There’s no creating today, nothing challenging the norm. All the music that has survived through the years have been groundbreaking. Only reason music today will be revisited is nostalgia alone. I play musical instruments. A few actually. I'm big into battle rap too. I consider myself a big hip hop fan, but mostly a music fan in general. I think the point that Vlad is trying to make, is that just because something is technically impressive on a skill level, doesn't mean that it is fun or entertaining to listen to. These two are having two different conversations. RA is referring to the craft and skill associated with making a musical creation. Vlad is referring to beauty in the eye of the beholder and that any one opinion on art is not correct or incorrect. There is no good or bad in music, all of this is opinion based. Grew up on Juvie, Wutang, Crooklyn dodgers, Jeru etc. obv the old gen, I didnt listen much for few years from about 2008-2016 the in between generation as I call it where the old and young are about 8-10 years apart, they tend to invent on the established, but it is the full next gen approx 18-20 years apart that wants to have something NEW and often disregards the old, it is the only way. I have embraced the new with some UK drill in 2016, the gritty dark atmospheric beats, high energy mixed with bad intensions. I was hooked again and have had a lot to catch up to. Since then I completely vibe with the new, old music just sounds old, if I want to reminisce I might play it but I am very much alive still and I need fresh energy yo!

I like to compare this topic to Classical Art vs. Post-Modernist Art. There was a time where an artist had to meet a standard level of excellence to be considered great. The artist studied what came before, learned the fundamentals, honed his craft, and when he created his works of art, he was able to express himself with a high level of recognizable skill. In this way, there are two components to art -- excellence and expression.
Even artists such as Picasso who pushed the boundaries during the Surrealist era of art in the early 1900s, still followed a structure that took from previous eras and had enough of a foundation that he met the standard of many classical artists. He displayed skill and talent even though some other artists criticized his work due to it being considered (at the time) too avante garde. The same can be said of impressionist and expressionist artists.
Not everyone could be considered a "great" artist. There was a time when an artist had to have true skill and meet a high standard.
Now compare that to Contemporary and Post-Modernist art. Almost anything can be considered an expression of art as long as it is dubbed "art". Anyone can be an "artist" without any standard of skill as long as they have something to express. There used to be beauty in art and skilled artists could inspire greatness with their work, but now, an "artist" can create a sculpture of a policewoman squatting down pissing and it is considered "art". A log of dog poop on a popsicle stick can be considered art if that is the intention. Robert Rauschenberg’s White Paintings (1951) is considered to be one of the first precursors to this movement -- they are essentially white (blank) panels. Robert wanted to create a work that displayed purity and untouched art. That was his expression. However, how much skill do you think that took to create?
That is what it really boils down to. Where is the challenge? What makes an artist's work impressive is the challenge -- the difficulty of the craft and how labor intensive it was to create. When it takes years upon years of practice and dedication to become a master at a given craft, that is what makes that artist's work impressive. No way could you compare a smeary "painting" made of period blood to Michelangelo's masterpiece, The Statue of David.
The same can be said of Hip-hop. How can you compare the wordsmith rhyming skill of Rakim and Nas to Migos and Future? Almost anyone can rap the same words repeatedly over a formulaic beat, mumble words, or "improve" their voice with autotune. It takes practically no skill.
RA is the right. Years from now, rappers like Lil Yachy, Future, Migos, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, and 6ix9ine will be mere footnotes in history, while artists like Run DMC, LL Cool J, Nas, Big Pun, Big L, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, Kool G Rap, etc. are going to continue to be remembered as legends of the craft of Hip-hop.

I'm a writer. Story-telling is an art. That doesn't mean it doesn't have rules.
You have to MASTER the rules in order to be able to break them effectively. These trap rap mumble dudes don't know the rules, so they don't break them with purpose.
The thing about rap is it's more like painting than writing. It can be impressionist, it can be surreal. The rules aren't quantifiable, but the legends have spent 40+ years exploring the boundaries and laying the foundation...then comes this generation and boils it down to compressed beats and rhyming without rhythm or purpose.
I get Too Short's argument, that we all hate our kids' music. And frankly, there was shit rap before. But this is different. This is a corruption of the art form. Producers aren't creating art, they're creating aural skinner boxes. It's a psychological trap. Create a simple pattern, repeat ad naseum. You ever worked retail and you gotta listen to that same loop of 1 hour worth of songs for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and one of those songs you hated to deal for some reason catches in your mind and suddenly you like it? That's hip hop now. Pound the same repetitive BS into your head until you accept it, because psychologically, it's the only way to cope.

R.A. is giving a good argument but what he should have said was "fine that these dudes are getting money, fine if most people like their music, but DON'T call it RAP" because rapping and emceeing is a specific and sacred talent to R.A. and to say that current mainstream "rappers" are on par with legit performers who honed a craft is unfair.

Just because newer generations of rappers make more money or get more fame doesn't mean they are on the same level. The content as a writers and is not even close. If (for example) someone famous now sells a book and it sells more copies with Amazon and all the marketing we have now than a classic from the past doesn't mean it's better or even close. When you rate someone as a rapper you can't put it on how catchy the song is, most of that falls on the beat the producer. You have to rate them on their writing and style/execution.

Im an OG, and I'm 37. I came up in the golden era of hip hop. I still listen to Nas, AZ, Mobb Deep,Chino XL, Pete Rock, Krs One, Biggie, Tupac, Redman, Kool G Rap, etc. But I also like the new artist such as 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Dae Dae, Migos, Gucci Mane, Rich Homie Quan,Kendrick Lamar, etc. I listen to all, and I don't hate on the old or new generation because I listen to both. If you're a hip hop fan and if you have an ear for music, you would appreciate both. I do believe that the golden era of hip hop was and is better than this generation of music, but don't overlook these new artist, because they do produce good music. You just have to have an open ear.
There has always been the question of art vs sales. It happens in painting, various forms of music, dancing, etc. A lot of current artists are doing what sells, so I can't be mad at them. Thing is music has been geared toward 12-17 year olds since the 1950s when the studio execs realized kids were spending their parents money. Kids will like anything thrown at them and it doesn’t have to be good. There was a study on the music industry and studio execs tailor their product, tweak their music to systematically sound like songs that were successful before. There’s no creating today, nothing challenging the norm. All the music that has survived through the years have been groundbreaking. Only reason music today will be revisited is nostalgia alone. I play musical instruments. A few actually. I'm big into battle rap too. I consider myself a big hip hop fan, but mostly a music fan in general. I think the point that Vlad is trying to make, is that just because something is technically impressive on a skill level, doesn't mean that it is fun or entertaining to listen to. These two are having two different conversations. RA is referring to the craft and skill associated with making a musical creation. Vlad is referring to beauty in the eye of the beholder and that any one opinion on art is not correct or incorrect. There is no good or bad in music, all of this is opinion based. RA is right though, there are definitely skilled and unskilled musicians. But who am I to judge? I listen to some really crazy stuff anyway...

so late to this debate, still valid. Grew up on Juvie, Wutang, Crooklyn dodgers, Jeru etc. obv the old gen, I didnt listen much for few years from about 2008-2016 the in between generation as I call it where the old and young are about 8-10 years apart, they tend to invent on the established, but it is the full next gen approx 18-20 years apart that wants to have something NEW and often disregards the old, it is the only way. I have embraced the new with some UK drill in 2016, the gritty dark atmospheric beats, high energy mixed with bad intensions. I was hooked again and have had a lot to catch up to. Since then I completely vibe with the new, old music just sounds old, if I want to reminisce I might play it but I am very much alive still and I need fresh energy yo!
