    Looks good, water level maybe a little high on the dam in case of big rains but looks good. Good move using that bentonite. I always did the same thing and never had any issue with leakage.

    It's a beautiful pond but a couple of items gave me concern. When the keyway was dug and ditch was open, the clay was bulldozed in and not compacted in lifts. Also the drain pipe did not have a collar which by it's absence could lead to leaks that follow on the outside of the pipe. Lastly, the attachment connector of the corrugated pipe to the solid wall pipe is prone to leaking. They make a waterproof tape that is supposed to help seal that connection. I've heard Flex-Seal waterproof tape is good for that too.

      Keyway way packed in very tight. Never had problems with doing it that way. And the drain pipe doesnt need a collar because it is surrounded by betonite clay. Super incredible stuff. Very good attention to detail though. Sounds like youve built a pond or two

      The keyway may compact over time due to the surcharge compaction it will get from the dam. An issue might arise if the ground cracks due to settling, however. Compacting it will bring peace of mind.

    With the water level that close to the top of the dam how do you set the height for the emergency spillway without it already topping the dam?

  • @ryanbarr4910
    @ryanbarr4910 7 місяців тому +2

    Pond looks beautiful but I share concerns for the core not being adequate and the risk for water making it around the spillway pipe.
    Is there an emergency spillway?
    The amount of freeboard you have seems too minimal.

    The Keyway should have been compacted in 6 inch layers , not bulldozed in and then compacted. The Overflow pipes are too close to the top of the Dam, They should be 12 inches below the top of the Dam, if you have a thunderstorm , with that catchment area, the Lake will overflow the Dam.

    • @janoraoutdoors
      @janoraoutdoors  9 місяців тому

      Had lots or experience with keyways. The way we pack them works fantastic. The overflows are not to close to the top. For starters they’re well oversized to compensate for wet weather. We also install a low spot (emergency overflow) in the dike. This allows water to take a designated channel if pipes clog or theres a huge flood. Not to mention having overflows 12 inches down in a good way to make your pond look terrible

    Have you ever dug a pond on an existing spring? Meaning wherever spring water comes up have you ever just dug a pond right there?

    • @janoraoutdoors

      Yes. Its actually a good sign when this happens. Usually the spring will continue to flow and fill the pond, constantly bringing fresh water in

      @@janoraoutdoors alright thanks, we have 2 springs on our property and one feeds a small pond through a pipe a few hundred feet downhill and the other one is untouched. A decent pond is vey much more than a sealed hole in the ground. It will not need all of the "stuff" the pond industry sells to maintain the pond. It will also not need to be dredged out after a couple decades which can cost more than the original pond. Think and design before the digging begins. By the way, the worst thing you can do to a pond edge is to riprap with rock or grow grass the edge. A pond edge cleans that water unless you do this. Yes, lots of people do this and lots of people have problems.

  • @74_Green
    @74_Green 9 місяців тому

    As others have also mentioned, always compact keyways. Just bulldozing fill into it defeats the design and purpose of a keyway. It is meant to be compacted harder than it's surrounding.
