    This is an excellent, inexpensive solution to these expensive bulbs. Based on this, I came up with using a extremely bright "flash light" LED, positioned it just right and it worked.

    Checking out Amazon, replacement DJL bulbs are going for anything from $60 to $280! ENH bulbs on eBay start at $6. Your hack is a godsend that I will try to replicate. Thanks.

    fantastic and perfect solution!!!
    congratulations!
    I realize an analogue solution in my DEF lamp (21,5V 150W General Electric but with glass mirror), with an halogen bulb G6.35 socket, 24 volts 150Watts (the lamp for slide projectors), for my Bell & Howell 8mm regular projector.
    very thanks for your wonderful solution!!!

    I've read that handling a halogen lamp with your bare hands is a really bad idea and will cause premature failure of the bulb due to oil from your hand causes unequal heat distribution on the glass

    Hey Charlie. I ordered one of your bulbs on Ebay didn’t get it yet. But I managed to solder the one I was working on. It works but the light is very dim. The projector says use only DLG bulbs. Am I using the wrong bulb? Is yours the correct one? Feel like I’m wasting my time and money. What do you think?

    • @hardluckcharlie
      @hardluckcharlie  6 років тому

      Hi Doug, It sounds like you installed a 120V lamp where you needed a 21.5 volt lamp for your DLS-DLG projector. The voltage matters as much as the wattage, if not more. If you're doing a hack on a 21.5V projector like yours, you will need to match it with a 21V donor lamp, such as an EKE or ENB. We always suggest that you just get a kit or a plug-in module. Thank you and good luck.

      well looking for ohp bulbs there is much more 82V 250w ones for about 5$ each or 600W 120v :] but those are quite a bit bigger though
      I have no idea about us voltage ones though because in europe we use 230V standard, so i thought that 12 or 24 volt bulb would be more universal, did not expected that to work from mains voltage.

    1:13 ENH lamps are 250w and ELH lamps are 300w. Since the original DJL lamp is 150w, won't this risk burning the film since you'll be radiating more heat than the original 150w bulb?

    • @hardluckcharlie
      @hardluckcharlie  6 років тому +2

      We have used both 150w EZK lamps and 250W ENH. For whatever reason, the 150w EZK and a 150w DJL do not output the same candle power. To get comparative output the 250w ENH must be used. We have used a laser thermometer at the film gate to measure temp. and the ENH is about the same, just a little cooler. Go figure. ;) Thank you again for the excellent questions.

    • @enigma7070
      @enigma7070 6 років тому +1

      Well thank you for the excellent answers as well! Halogens are slightly more efficient than incandescent bulbs (3.5% vs 2.1%) so theoretically you wouldn't expect there to be a huge variation in temperature. Also, output for halogens as measured in lumens is typically equal to or greater than that of an incandescent bulb. The only reason I can come up with for why this fails here is that I believe the projector bulbs run much brighter and hotter than a "typical" (e.g. household bulb). Just imagine staring at a 150w household bulb vs. a 150w projector bulb. I believe the projector bulb is going to be much brighter and hotter (and will blind you sooner!). Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any detailed specs. produced for these vintage bulbs regarding luminosity or thermal output so it's hard to answer this question analytically. It's "cool" (pun intended) that you discovered this and found a working solution empirically!

    • @hardluckcharlie
      @hardluckcharlie  6 років тому +1

      Thank you so much. We do use an infrared laser thermometer to get the thermal readings. The candle power comparisons are done side by side. It is interesting how these comparisons don't correlate with the lamp wattage ratings. Take care.

    • @parkforestnewspaperthief476
      @parkforestnewspaperthief476 5 років тому +1

      @@enigma7070 To answer your final point first, the projector bulb will blind you first because it is concentrated by the reflector. Also, remember that the voltage / current / wattage of an incandescent bulb filament is not written in stone. There is a range it can run at. Running any given filament on a higher voltage will up the current and therefore the wattage and thus a brighter, whiter output but at a tremendous cost in reduced hours while running on a lesser voltage does the opposite. For example, cut the voltage to an ordinary household bulb in half and the life doesn't double; it may go up ten-fold. Or more! The point here is that the projector bulb is running at the upper end of that range which is why they have such short lifetimes. That filament is of such design (thickness & length) that if you examined it and were told it was for a household bulb you might guess that it was intended for just, say, 90 volts. It would be a dimmer bulb but have a normal life. But it's made to run on 120V which makes it very intense but very short-lived. They ARE putting out more lumens per watt. And that's another reason the projector bulb will hurt your eyes more than the same wattage ordinary bulb.
      Which is why they came up with the halogen bulb which is also a type of incandescent and runs at the top end but the halogen principle keeps it going longer than it otherwise would. I'm sure there is a Wiki article which explains it.
      Now then, as to the question as to why it takes more wattage to properly illuminate --especially when it's a halogen bulb where you would think you would get away with less wattage? Most likely it is a question of optical efficiency. The halogen bulb in its original reflector had the filament at the precise optical center. I'm not familiar with the donor bulb so I don't know what size aperture it was intended to illuminate---anything from 2" slides to 16mm to 8mm. Likely the DJL also had it's filament properly located. But after the conversion it's doubtful that the filament is exactly where it would produce the greatest light output with the old reflector. It's amazing enough that it works at all.
      As a personal note, after watching The Deuce on HBO, I got a whim to buy some 8mm (regular 8) adult reels on eBay. But no way to play it but I scored two B&H machines off CL for just $25. I think one can do both R8 and S8. The other S8 only. Both have DJL bulbs. The downside is now I feel obligated to watch this crap. It's really boring. Once through on each reel and it will go sit on a shelf forever. Or maybe back on eBay. Hopefully, my bulbs will last but if not I will be trying what is shown here.
