  • The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB is, in essence, Ferrari's first mid-engined car. The Dino may have come beforehand, but this was the first to wear a Ferrari badge.
    With just 387 produced, it's much rarer, lighter and more powerful than the later 512s.
    Join evo's Henry Catchpole as he drives the iconic car.

    The 365 GT4 BB and the 512 BB are both so stunning and amazing machines. That guy who bought this beauty is a very lucky person indeed.

    No one will believe me, but my dad owns one of the 387 units ever made of the 365 GT4 BB. His is a 1975 and spent some time in Japan before he purchased in 1980. Glad to see the value going up after he had full restoration done in 2014!

    I'm so glad you managed to find one of these. A more raucous uncivilised version of the later 512BB - I remember seeing a road test for this at the time and loving the little pull down sunvisors! It was the bogs dollocks at the time. I was later lucky enough to own a carb 308GTB - can't believe how stupid I was to sell it. The crackle from those carbs with the drivers' window cranked a couple of inches was sublime (Rhd version)

    I was quite taken by the Countach as a teenager, but later realised that I was rather gauche (and so, dare I say it, was the Countach). The BB is a far better-looking car, and a more timeless, classic design.

      +M RO Yeah, this Ferrari needs some work for sure. 1. Straightening of all rims to remove vibration in the steeringwheel and butt. 2. Rebalance the wheels after straightening. 3. Do a proper wheel alignment and re-center the steering wheel.
      Also something about that exhaust note bugs me. Especially during the cold start it sounded a bit weird.

    Henry is lucky that the car he got to drive has a big steering wheel spacer fitted. This gives a much better chance of achieving a comfortable driving position. The standard wheel is so close to the top of the instrument cowl that the leather there is often covered in nicks from fingernails! What a pure shape these cars were though. Lovely!

    Good commentary on the high-profile tires. Plus, those tires just look RIGHT on these cars. The suspension would not cope with low-profile tires. I know you lose some accuracy in steering with high-profile tires, but I just put a set on my MINI Cooper S and it really works for the car. But my MINI is a bulldog compared to that 365 GT4 BB.....beautiful car.

    I am not normally a nostalgist but the boxer is still my favourite car , it is totally outclassed by modern Ferraris but , for me it retains that indefinable something that has lasted with me these many years , the harsh bark of the flat twelve , the side profile and the rear end view all have lasted as a desirable enticement to buyers of classic Ferraris and this car is indeed a great classic.

    • @paulw.9669
      @paulw.9669 5 років тому

      Most modern sports cars look more like advanced kitchen appliances than anything else, with their over-abundance of ugly, geometric, details breaking up the lines of the car. The BB, and the Lamborghini Miura, that it was a response to, are just svelte with the barest of design details that complement the look of the cars rather than distract from them.

  • @Kneedragon1962
    @Kneedragon1962 8 років тому +1

    I believe those early BB cars were quite lovely to drive at medium speed, but they became a bit of a handful if you tried to push them. As mentioned, the engine was on top of the gearbox, which was not ideal, and like the Countach, manufacturers hadn't quite worked out what the suspension and alignment settings should be yet... Correct 'normal' front engine dynamics was pretty well understood, but getting a mid engine to work right was a bit of a new thing...

      +ianiva I'm right there with you, never knew this existed. Talk about an automotive unicorn. Any idea what the differences between a 180 degree V engine and a boxer engine are? I know BB always stood for Berlinetta Boxer so i just assumed it was a boxer engine, but he made sure to say it's not one but rather a 180 (flat) V12

    • @styx85
      @styx85 8 років тому +3

      +damieg82 Basically in a boxer engine each pair of pistons operate "in phase", so the opposing cylinders ignite simultaneously. In a 180° V engine each pair of pistons share a crankpin, so they fire "out of phase" with each other (when one goes up, the other goes down).

    • @ffcracker

    • @HenryDavidFloyd
      @HenryDavidFloyd 8 років тому +2

      +damieg82 Boxer has every single piston with its own connection to the crankshaft, in an alternate fashion, meaning opposing cylinders fire simultaneously, "boxing" each other like fists. 180 degree V, each pair of opposing pistons shares a single connection to the crankshaft, so they are always moving in opposite directions, not "boxing" each other.

    The reasons why the car never sold in the US had nothing to do with Enzo. FIAT was running the road car division with zero input from EF from 1970. The marketing connection of this car was to the 312 F1 motor, and no one in the US cared about F1 in the 70s.

      +CyberTigerCro Nope, you actually got it completely wrong. 180 degree V engines are shaped exactly like boxers, with all of the cylinders lying flat (180 degrees apart from each other). The difference is more technical: a boxer has every single piston with its own connection to the crankshaft, in an alternate fashion, meaning opposing cylinders fire simultaneously, "boxing" each other like fists. 180 degree V, each pair of opposing pistons shares a single connection to the crankshaft, so they are always moving in opposite directions, not "boxing" each other.

    In over 40 friggin' years I've NEVER heard it called a "count-ash"; and is a wing mirror a wing mirror when it's not on a wing?

      @@claudiomarangone614 Heyya Claudio, thanks but I'm sure we all know that wing, as in wing mirror is a fender.
      BTW, sayin' British English is the same as saying 930 turbo (911 turbo turbo), it's redundant as they invented it. 'yank English as a descriptor is good though 'cause that tells us it's not real English.
      What I was sayin' is that they called them wing mirrors yet there were no mirrors on their wings.

    • @mateo89fl
      @mateo89fl 8 років тому

      Exactly, it's not a production car. It's a concept car made by Pininfarina, Enzo Ferrari didn't even like it and only decided to build the 365 GT4 BB after the success of the Miura.

      +plidex What about the 250LM? That was a production road car as well.

    • @mateo89fl
      @mateo89fl 8 років тому

      Henry Floyd I think the 250LM is a production* road car, the asterisk being that Enzo had to make it to homologate the car for GT racing. Just like Mercedes had to build the road version of the CLK GTR. Calling them production cars is a bit generous. But what matters here is what Enzo thought and how Lamborghini made him change his mind.
