For this machine, look @14:11 for reference, the taffy should only be on the 3 arms on the right, and with the taffy firmly wrapped/molded around the outer 2 arms before you start the machine. This begins the stretching immediately, instead of across 4 arms flips the taffy first before any arms stretch whatever is left on still
Hello guys! Chuy (chew) here from Upland Ca. I was trying decode your letters from the machine and what i was able to find out was that your candy puller looks like a “HILDRETH CANDY PILLING MACHINE “ made in the early/mid 1900’s. By the looks of your machine, it looks like the previous owners probably did a few jobs or replacements parts on it. That is why you’re missing the bottom part covers and the logo on one of the arms on your machine. Hopefully this helps.
Not clickbait. Scott holding the camera and quietly freaking out, Cara supervising and Craig getting beat up by the machine 😂 Thank you for uploading this!
There are some other videos out on UA-cam with taffy pullers. I think the problem is the batch was too small. Not enough to stick to the tines. You may need a triple batch based on the size of that machine. And that creates new problems I imagine.
Don’t let your pride be hurt when trying something new. Each time you try, you grow and gain from new learning experiences. Failure only occurs when you give up. Keep trying new things you guys. So much respect your way ❤ It takes such skill to do what you’re doing.
I think the batch roller would help for really big batches anywhere from 35 to 40lbs plus, You may also want to wait till the candy is a bit cooler than normal. Lastly make sure the candy is full on the hooks before turning on machine.
This genuinely reminds me of what it felt like trying to get my patty machine in the first day… Those machines from 50+ years ago are crazy heavy, but so very durable.
The taffy puller ...you have to put the whole lump candy on the two middle arms push it down at the sides, round under and stick together then turn the machine on.
agreed... Steve was close with the RED batch, but he didn't CONNECT the ends together, and it fell apart. Also, in the same video they played the clip from, when the machine starts and stretches the loop of candy out, the guy reaches in to make sure the initial stretch doesn't droop too much, until the next bar comes around to grab it.
Too late now haha, but perhaps you could have brought that rug outside and rolled it onto it, then pull it inside by pulling the end of the rug. In EMS we use sheets.. a rug....whatever worked to get people out of a tight room to get them to the cot. Works great! That thing is going to be an amazing help to you all !
Won't work with this because of the hard corners... it will just get stuck on the doorstep, take it from somebody who has worked as a mover for over 10 years ;)
Love the video! Don't give up on the taffy puller, it looks amazing! Please let us know that Coop is okay, Yes, we viewers noticing he is not his usual self. Love you Hercules! 💘

My family owns a little bakery before it was a bakery there parents had a small candy shop. It looks exactly like there taffy machine which is a Hildreths candy pulling machine , it’s a vintage puller made around 1905
I wonder if they let their candy cool more than you do before putting it on the machine. Watching Steve try to save the candy was freaking me out, I was so scared he was going to get his arm stuck in the machine
@@HerculesCandy Keep trying Steve, it takes a long time to master manually pulling the candy on the hook. It goes to reason to think it will take a while to do it on the puller. And if you watch the Japanese clip you put in this video, you will see they only use 3 arms on the metal puller not 4. Keep going Batman, you've got this!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I think Julia said maybe it is too slick (greased). It does look like it’s sliding off too easily. Maybe that’s why the other videos have trouble with it sticking. Maybe it has to stick some to stay on the hooks/paddles. Love watching you guys and your family.
Haven't watched you all in a looong time. So happy to see you're doing well. So many new faces, and i don't believe i've ever seen sugar poured on the taffy before. Will have to catch up again to explain all mysteries =)
I wonder if it would work better if the hard candy was cooler before putting it on the puller? I feel like the hotter it is, the more droopy it gets, but if it’s cooler than maybe it will stay together more? Just thinking out loud, not sure about the candy science behind it.
looked on google for the difference between taffy and hard candy it's in the section where people ask questions taffy starts as a syrup with a lower concentration of sugar about 95% and boiled to a lower temperature 270 to 289 f either pulled or on the hook hope this helps
A COUPLE SUGGESTIONS AND QUESTIONS (humidity meter should measure store areas) How much to include an air dehumidifier ... since you close Sunday, could a bunch of room dehumidifiers running 30-36 hours remove water to make a difference? if candy making table is up against a continuous wall separating your store from hair salon AND DOES NOT TURN UNTIL THE PARKING BEHIND THE BUILDING then hair salon is a 2,000 SqFt rectangle and the rest of building (i assume all yours) is about 4,500 SqFt.... so needs 6x 800SqFt dehumidifiers i see a 145 pint machine rated at 800SqFt at $1565 so under $10,000 for a portable solution that should retain 50% of value should you need to sell. NOTE: units selling for 130% cost is better than 200% efficient (a 1.05k$ vs a 1.4k$ for 24 pint vs 52 pint machine) do you due diligence though, i saw apparent same machine just different brand (likely same manufacturer like china often does) at 25% discount
You're right about your fans love it when you make mistakes ! At the same time that we're feeling sorry that you're "sad candy makers" making floor candy, the crazy way the candy strings out and flips around is slapstick. My family gathered to see what was so funny cause I laughed so hard. Clearly your other fans are better people and helping you to understand how to actually make this work. Yes yes YES!!! I have been waiting and hoping for y’all to break this bad boy out!! It will be fun and may make for some great asmr videos! Can’t wait for some taffy!!!
Maybe when you are mixing the hard candy together in the pile as you go, add the silica packets to the pile to help with sticking? Since you do that when packaging anyway
This may have been figured out or pointed out by someone else but it seems to me one of the taffy pulling hooks on each side are in the wrong position. I hope I can explain this. Each time a hook is going to contact taffy that is being pulled the hook needs to be in the position so the taffy lands on the bottom or inside the "hook". there is a hook on each side that each time the taffy hits it, it slides off the outside of the hook instead of into the hook where it can be held straight to be pulled. So on each arm one hook needs to be up and one down. Right now they are both up depending on how you look at it. one side is able to hook the taffy in place and the other it just slides off the hook sideways. FWIW. Good luck. Looks like a great machine.
Hello, fun vid! Just wanted to let you know that the WD-40 is not a substitute for grease on the moving parts of the machine. You can use the WD-40 to remove old grease and clean the parts, but if you want to protect the machine you still need to add grease after the fact since WD-40 is not a lubricant, but rather a degreaser and water displacer.
This was a funny video. You three trying to get the taffy puller in the building . You're videos are always very entertaining. And I learned something about candy making at the same time. I'm hoping someday I catch a live stream.😊. I see Max isn't working anymore. He was very entertaining. Craig and Max are pretty funny together? Haven't read all the comments . An observation . The machine in the other video has a staionary arm , with 2 moving arms . You're trying to achieve the same effect with 4 moving arms . The moving arms rotate around the stationary arm . Um , put the candy over one set of the rotating arms and have the other set moving up through the candy instead of down initially ? Speed controller on the motor ?
Not sure if you have a dehumidifier in your shop but here in Texas you pretty much have to have one to keep candy from sticking like that. Maybe give it a try and see if it helps. Thanks for the videos always fun to watch
You should ask Greg at Lofty Pursuits if he recognizes the logo from the rubbing. He seems to know a lot about vintage candymaking methods and equipment. 🙂
Also Greg at Lofty Pursuits has a taffy puller and it looks similar to yours has 4 arms I believe and he pulls some of his hard candies on his. I think he starts it on one arm and then picks up the other arms as they rotate by.
My ribbon candy I got ordered got stuck toghter it was still good I smacked it on the ground pices it was delious cant wait till my next order comes in Im hooked.... Love it keep up the hard work guys ...candy is worth every cent
Maybe you can add a footswitch between the power of the taffy puller, so that you can regulate the movements. I've seen video's where they start out slow with some sort of a switch to stop it and help it a little by hand till it grips on and then let it fully run by itself.
The twins need to put their rings together so they get their power but I'm super duper excited to see it get used I saw that glimmer in steves eyes when he saw them using the taffy machine
Can you remove one of the arms on the taffy puller and just use three to get used to using the machine. Also maybe you have to use a full batch of hard candy for the taffy puller.

Try taking a picture of the name on the bottom and open the file in photoshop or similar. Play around with the contrast and or invert colors, make black and white, etc. Sometimes you can read stuff like that if you take contrast colors, etc to an extreme level.
If you guys get more candy that sitcks together, instead of theowing it out, you could smash it and sell the dust/sprinkles!? Ive seen people say theyd love to buy it for drink rims or just to eat like the powder you dip lollipops in. Heck, im sure you could even just smash chunks off and sell it as "geodes" and kids would love it! I know when its stuck together its not as pretty to sell, but im sure there are people whod still buy it. To a kid, candy is candy lol!
It may be that the sour powder is affecting it somehow, maybe try it with the regular candy. And you might try making a complete loop around the bars with the candy rather than just draping it over the bars.
I know the family, we have a Whatsapp type group for all the people who work on the channel, I can confirm they are all adorable. You can see more of Craig and Cara on "No Egg Craig".
It’s not supposed to be over all four arms, some places run it over two arms to start and most run it on three arms. Just an fyi all for will flip off the end on it.

They're not making taffy with it. Hard candy is different. They're using it instead of the pulling hook on the wall.
But it couldn't hurt to try loading it the same way as taffy. The first way didn't work. What can it hurt as long as it gets pulled?
Even Steve has to pull it down and flip until he can get it easy enough to figure eight it on the hook!
i think the issue is the cand is still to hot for the taffy puller to work.
