  • Nîmes is a beautiful city located in the southern part of France, in the region of Occitanie. Known for its rich history and ancient Roman architecture, Nîmes is a popular tourist destination. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Arena of Nîmes, which dates back to the first century AD and is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Other notable attractions include the Maison Carrée, a perfectly preserved Roman temple, and the Pont du Gard, an ancient aqueduct that spans the Gardon River. Nîmes is also famous for its denim-like fabric, known as "denim" or "serge de Nîmes," which is said to have given birth to the modern blue jeans.

Thank you for showing the historical town of Nimes. It belongs to the groupe of towns in South France, which are jewels. The concert at the Roman area is an appropriate end of this beautiful video.

Felicitations for your well-documented visit to the city of Nîmes where you can see various monuments that show that the very ancient and rich history of Nîmes is not limited to the Roman monuments even if they are spectacular and very well preserved. Indeed, few people who know the history of the Nîmes canvas at the origin of the jean because Nîmes was a major centre of the textile industry and the seat of several French textile companies founded by Nîmes and known worldwide as Eminence or Cacharel. As few people know the Michelade of 1567 where the Nîmois Protestants massacred the Catholics of the city (the opposite of what will happen in Paris during the Saint Barthélémy in 1572) or that the construction of the church Sainte Perpétue will be inaugurated in 1852 by the 1st president of the French republic the prince Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte future emperor Napoleon III and nephew of Napoleon 1st Bonaparte ;The particularity of Nîmes is that all the churches, except the cathedral , are built from the middle of the 17th century after the capture of the Protestant stronghold in 1629 by the King of France Louis XIII . Indeed, includes Protestants destroyed churches and religious buildings of the Middle Ages during the wars of religion in the 16-17th century (ex the building of the Roman sanctuary called the Temple of Diana which was transformed into a convent and which the Protestants blew up in 1577 so that only the ruins remain in the gardens of the Fountain) , with the exception of the cathedral preserved because of its bell tower used for military observation. It was in the Cathedral of Notre Dame and Saint Castor and its surroundings, especially in Place aux Herbes, that one of the most important international events in history took place, strangely the least known in the history of Nîmes, namely the departure of soldiers and knights for the 1st Crusade in the Holy Land gathered at Nîmes before their departure under the command of the Count of Toulouse Raymond IV of Saint Gilles ,came to receive the blessing of Pope Urban II on July 6, 1096, who came to preach the Crusade after he consecrated the cathedral the day before on July 5, 1096. It was this army of crusaders from Nîmes that was going to seize the citadel of Jerusalem, the Tower of David, on July 15, 1099 causing the capitulation of the city then in the hands of the Muslims. The only trace of this event is one of the stained glass windows of the cathedral which constitutes the only representation of the count of Toulouse Raymond IV of Saint Gilles, A historical figure now forgotten but important because it was he who encouraged the Crusaders, who after the capture of the city of Antioch wanted to wait for reinforcements, to continue the march on Jerusalem which he contributed to the conquest. Removed from the throne of the new Christian kingdom of Jerusalem by the jealousy of the crusader barons who preferred him the modest Godefroi de Bouillon, he went to conquer new lands and founded the county of Tripoli (present-day Lebanon) and died in the Holy Land in 1105, as he had solemnly vowed in the cathedral of Nimes before his departure for crusade. Moreover other historical testimony of the cathedral, are buried under the cathedral the bodies of the Nîmois clergymen gathered and then executed by the Protestants during the Michelade in 1567 in the court of pleasure of the"Bishop (now the Old Nimes Museum next to the cathedral) and then thrown into a well currently covered by the steps of the building rebuilt in the 17th century after its destruction by the Protestants. The skeletons of the bodies were recovered from the well after the capture of the city by Louis XIII in 1629 and buried under the cathedral.
The cathedral of Nîmes also houses the tomb of the cardinal of Bernis minister of the king of France Louis XV who welcomed his friend Casanova known when he was ambassador of France to Venice, when he escaped from the prison of the Plombs in Venice and came to take refuge in France.
