      Yup. The difference is that roads are built for speeds of 80 or 90 mi/h. We have special places for cars to go 250mi/h and those are called tracks.
      However, riding on a street at 45 mi/h has a much more practical reason too. Commuting. Not everyone can afford a full size car and those who can might still prefer the energy savings of riding a bike. Commuting is an essential function. Public Mass transportation sucks. That leaves only a few legitimate options:
      - significantly reduce the cost of owning and operating a vehicle
      - significantly improve public mass transportation:. ⓐ Increase capacity, routes, coverage, speeds, frequency, cleanliness ⓑ reduce fares
      - create widespread *_dedicated e-bike lane networks_* on the road

    I feel like the US should start doing what they do in countries that have embraced the bike riding culture. There are countries that cars are the guess on the roads, and there are special bike highways to get from city to city. I bet those countries are alot healthier than the US too.

    I have 2 ebikes, a Lectric XP 3.0 Extended Range and a Engwe Engine Pro. Both cap out at 28MPH. I don't feel safe riding it the street, with cars only being able to go 28MPH. If either of my bikes went up to at lease 50MPH,I would only ride my bike, in the street. But because where I live, there are very few bike lanes on the main streets, I have no choice but to ride my bike on the side walk or bike/walking trails. Now I'm 48 yrs old and over 300lbs. You are not going to see me doing wheelies and stunts on my bike. This is also my only mode of transportation, besides walking. I don't own a car.

      I am in a similar position. I have a Samebike M20 and a Hiboy S2 scooter, bike is for day trips, and scooter fits in a cab to get my groceries home. No car needed...
      I also feel much safer when i can move at the same speed as traffic. Having a decent motor output also gets me moving quickly, not traveling at a crazy top speed while still having the juice to get me up hills and out of the way of traffic...
      Speed should be the only limit for ebikes. Not power output...

      @@WholeWhiteBaby Not to infringe on Maximum Charges Channel. But I'm planning to start reviewing my bikes here very soon. I also plan on replacing my controller in my Engwe after I can afford a 72v battery. In hopes to be able to get to at least 40MPH on that bike. With just a controller and battery swap. If I am, I might do the same to the Letric XP 3.0, if I don't sell it to buy the battery for the Engwe.
      Lectric is supposed to be sending out replacement controllers to change how the speed of the bike is handled. I believe they are basing it on current instead of whatever it's based on now.

    Well over all I can tell you that net effect of faster and faster Ebikes is probably a bad trend from a macro point of view, however here is the flip side,
    you often in urban areas and cities are at greater risk as an Ebike rider when you can't keep up with car traffic doing 30 to 40 MPH and there is no available bike lane,
    (this happens quite a lot ) In other words your safer just going temporarily into the regular car lane and going with traffic, than attempting to stay on the side of the road
    that is not well paved or maintained for Ebike riders, (this is more a widespread problem in urban area's, but isn't the majority or the trend going forward to see Ebike ownership
    in major urban areas?) Is there actually a breakdown somewhere of what percentage of Ebike ownership is occuring in urban area's VS more rural areas of our country?

    Hello, I’m a bike (🚴) mechanic and I have to say honestly working on e-bikes is the worst. Most of them weigh over 30 lbs and are tiring and cumbersome to move around the shop all day. And don’t get me started on the electrical issues some of them have. Some of the companies can’t seem to make quality parts while others have redundant or annoying parts that get in the way of the rear mech to change gears among other things. Despite all this, we sell a lot of them to couples or elderly people who just want to ride their bikes, but not have to break a sweat to do it. Also they make a good profit for the shop so I’m always glad when we sell one to a satisfied customer. Some of the more ridiculous builds however are more useless in my eyes. But who am I to judge? That’s my two cents.

    CWhen I was younger I could pedal about 35 mph on my racing bike and never recall getting pulled over. I'm 71 now and still can maintain 20 mph pedaling on my road bike with spurts to 26 mph. I have built an ebike with BBSHD, Grin All Axel direct drive with regen and G62 1000 watt version running Phaserunner controllers with 3 72v 20ah batteries. Each motor is 3600 Watts with a total of 10800 Watts ( I could go higher but this will do for now). I climb mountains in Yukon where you can have drop-offS of 3000 ft on the trail you are driving on. Would I let a kid drive this bike? NO !!! Let's get real there are lots of People that can pedal faster than 30 mph and this has been going on for longer than you have been alive and I don't recall anyone complaining about that . Hell my ebike is so heavy it glides down hill at 30 mph without using the motor or pedaling . How do you figure an ebike should be limited to 20 mph when even an old man can pedal faster than that? Why would any responsible parent let a kid have an ebike that is powerful without proper training? The guys on the Tour De France can reach speeds of 61 mph and a woman holds the world record for pedaling a bike 184 mph. Looks like the pedal people have it over the ebikers. Funny since ebikes came out that certain people decided to make a big fuss about rules when people have been pedaling at your so called car speeds for years and nobody complained. As I said earlier I am 71 and I can pedal faster than 20 mph on the flat and probably 30 mph on a good downhill, I guess that is acting like a car.

    • @maximumchargeEV

      All valid points. The ebike laws in Europe are always a hot topic because they restrict you to such a slow speed it's easy to go faster with a regular bike. Seems like the younger kids on high power ebikes are causing the problem. How do you propose this is solved?

    • @letni9506
      @letni9506 Рік тому

      But you can't really pedal 30mph on most trails or paths with pedestrians on a regular bike.
      These bikes that go over 40 on a throttle are dangerous and you can't hear them coming.
      On the road doing 30 on a throttle is fine but people don't use their bikes like that.
      And tbh I think under 30 should be the cut off because otherwise it's a scooter and should be licensed as such.

    • @letni9506
      @letni9506 Рік тому

      I think your argument is flawed.
      The reason bikes haven't been taxed or made to have documentation is because they were self powered. That's by you or by gravity. It's never really been about speed.
      Ebikes came along and changed that. So there has to be some cut off point for power
      Otherwise how is it different to an electric motorcycle?

    • @rufusirvin5279
      @rufusirvin5279 Рік тому

      @@letni9506 Humans are strange, give them something useful and they will figure a way to misuse it. I primarily ebike in the mountains therefore I have a high powered AWD ebike but most of the time I'm lucky to do 10 mph. Speed heats up the battery and motor so you won't be going fast for too long . YES it is safer to keep up with traffic because humans are also idiots behind a wheel. If I can pedal 35 mph then anything faster than that can be considered a motorcycle or moped. I have seen fools speeding down paths where people hike, on pedal bikes and electric bikes . I believe there are more older people that own ebikes and I don't see them as the irresponsible drivers except for a few. My thinking is not flawed as most people agree that to get the best range from your battery you should go 20 to 25 mph if you're in the streets.

      @@maximumchargeEV you are right, no matter where in life It does come down to respect for everyone, treating them as you want to be treated. As you know there is no greater freedom than an e-bike, I have recently found out about this new way of exploring. There's nothing like this type of power, electric type of power is unlike any other, not regarding acceleration Everytime, or breaking speed limits, it's the type of power of that is so pleasurable and different. I have social anxiety to a great degree and not causing any noise or air pollution and at the same time having the freedom of being considered a bicycle and can go wherever I want, I really don't want to be noticeable about the time that I am I'm already gone there looking at my taillights LOL. I live in Williams Arizona where there's nothing to do here put to visit the Grand Canyon in the world's largest ponderosa pine Grove at 7,000 feet with 10 trout stocked lakes Bald eagles and ospreys etc. so in this town of hotels and restaurants it would be nice if we had an e-bike rental shop here like in Flagstaff Arizona. Tucson has free scooters for all the public so they can use them freely why they visit the City while they're there and they can leave them wherever they want because they're picked up by city workers every night and charged for the next day. There's always going to be hikers and regular bicyclist that will have to accept us just like the skier's here in Flagstaff had to accept the snowboarders that was younger crowd where there was some problems at first. I'm in my early sixties and I'm the only one here in town that rides one, and it would be nice to see more. I enjoy watching massive group rides of all the PEV's!!!

Bag or basket.. It's perfect. Maybe a Fabulous Havoc or Fabulous Road Warrior for fast front wheel pick up and hill climbs. No need for over 2,000 watt bikes ever. I mean never ever. You say you can't help it, but you love the speed and power of fast e-bikes. Even if laws do not currently restrict their speed, the laws of physics still apply to them. That is, if you crash into something at 40 mph, compared to 20 mph, the impact is not 2X, but 4X. One pioneer e-bike distributors shop in Seattle was frequently asked by his customers to modify his 36 V e-bikes by upping the voltage , and with it power and speed. He observed that every time he did so, his customer with the "over-volted" modified e-bike would end up injured, some of them requiring hospitalization. He learned his lesson quickly and left the bikes stock from then on. Who pays for patching up these bonehead riders after they come to grief? Eventually everyone ends up paying for them in the form of higher medical premiums. Do you know anyone whose been killed on motorcycles that automobile drivers simply haven't seen seen? I do--personally? Face it, fast e-bikes are a way for guys with skinny bank accounts to buy speed cheap, much more cheaply than purchasing proper motorcycles with sturdy frames, beefy suspension, real headlights and turn signals, speed-rated tires and serious brakes. As you can see by looking at highway fatality statistics for motorcycles, they are far more likely to kill its riders than are automobiles. And now you're introducing e-bikes to highway speeds that are simply not designed to handle the stress that this speed puts on their relatively puny components. Personally, I could care less if someone kills himself on a 50-70 mph e-bike--not unless it leads to a traffic accident leading to death, injury or vehicle damage of others. More importantly, you recognize that it's a matter of time before the Karens come out and pressure politicians to regulate the rest of e-bike riders. No, it's not the "Golden Age" of e-bikes, but the age of bonehead e-bike riders pushing the envelope of everyone else's tolerance.

Especially the younger crowd who tend to do things they shouldn't be like; trying to get on the freeway, riding at 30+ on sidewalks with pedestrians, blowing blind corners where a car stopping normally might cause an accident... Which i saw a guy go over the hood of a car in this way. person was fine, bike was trashed and he trashed the front of that guys car. The issue isn't the speed of Ebikes, it's minimal IQ to live kids who think they can get away with going 40 on a trail and getting the fun taken away from everyone else. It is unfortunate but that is just how it is. Jesus, I am 25 and complaining about "them dang on kids".
    I'm not sure about licensing. If it does happen it'll be the class of the Ebike that determines which will probably cause a bunch of manufacturers to start making a dozen subclasses.
    What makes it complicated here in the US as compared to Europe is the terrain. The feds can't, although they will want to, make any blanket laws for Ebikes because it's a rural vs urban issue.
    A Ebike that goes 20 is probably fine if you live in a urban area but if you're in a rural area like where I am at, 20 mph wouldn't even get me to the closest store in under an hour.
    It would be legislation hell, it will be so confusing and vague that it would make California "sensitive place" laws look clearly defined and practical.
    But yet like you said in the video, they will be taxed somehow. Ohio is already concerned about funding road projects because the amount of EVs has caused a massive hit to the gas tax which is where the state got its road and highway funds. Best case scenario is they just make you buy a sticker that you need to slap on the back, worst case is they become regulated like cars and it kills the biggest appeal of getting an Ebike.
    Just wait till people start putting up their own solar charging stations causing states and towns to lose both the gas tax and the electric tax.

    This is a hot topic now and has been since ebikes went viral. It should be simple. There are 3 classes of ebikes. Class 1 is a pedal assist only (no throttle) up to 20mph. Pedaling is required to engage the motor. Most ebikes I see on the trails are this type. I own one. Class 2 is pedal assisted with a throttle up to 20mph. The throttle is the wild card and makes this ebike more like a motorcycle. I've seen people riding them on the street and they all seem to be using only the throttle and going as fast as the bike will go. Class 3 is pedal assist up to 28 mph. Although you can never pedal 28mph going uphill I feel that class 3 ebikes should not be allowed on trails. Having a throttle makes it more synonymous with motorcycles so I believe class 2 and 3 ebikes should be only allowed to be operated on the street and subject to motorcycle laws. They even look like motorcycles. No matter where you ride them the rider must exercise common sense and ride them safely. But we all know common sense isn't that common. Just my opinion.

    • @maximumchargeEV
      @maximumchargeEV  Рік тому

      I see what you're saying. What about cadence sensors that essentially act like a throttle? Let's say you're just ghost pedaling slowly at 50mph simply to tell the motor to turn on? Technically it's pedal assist? Or throttle?

    • @mtbwithtfb
      @mtbwithtfb Рік тому

      @@maximumchargeEV Not sure I understand what you mean. On all class 1 ebikes the motor disengages automatically unless the owner modifies it, which is illegal. I'm assuming the other two classes have similar governors but you're talking about 50 MPH. If an ebike can go 50 mph it needs to be restricted to the street where other traffic flow is going the same speed.
