I film weddings in Spain with the Sony A7III, I've had a couple issues with overheating (shoting at 4k 24p the whole ceremony with the sun killing us). I did several test at mine. I saw a video of a guy (whose name I can remember) testing the sony a7s3 outdoors in Texas and I thought to myself "The sony a7s3 wil be my A camera for weddings"
Everywhere on UA-cam people talk about overheating and getting extremely hot of the Sony A7IV during 4K recordings and even shutting down! My simple question, if you film in 1440p does this camera also overheat after filming for a long time? Since this A7IV is high on my wish list instead of the FX30 because of more possibilities for photos and better low light possibilities, I want to be able to make beautiful films during a performance! These stages are not fully lit and I wouldn't add extra because of the atmosphere. Unfortunately, there are usually only professionals who judge this camera and who have a computer that can process 4K images without difficulty! While afterwards they will render to 1440p so as not to make the file too large!
Once we updated and left the hdmi door open we have not had any issues with overheating, i have never seen the heat lamp come on and we shoot in 4k for about an hour during ceremonies. So if you are filming for an hour or less I can say we havent had any issues. Especially if you are indoors. Also, you dont need to have your timeline set to 4k to edit in it, we always work in 1080 and then export in 4k if we need to.
does the dual recording increase the heat significantly? I'm asking if the tests were done with only single card recording would that be significantly better performance?
Since we updated we have only duel recorded and have not had any issues. With that being said, I would assume that single slot recording would reduce the heat generated. But we have been using this in 90 degree weather on a gimble with no heat warnings.
Thats great to hear! Did you also notice improvements regarding the heat development in general? Do you think the camera gets overly hot when shooting for extended periods of time?
It’s 58 right now lol. I seriously would try opening the HDMI and USB door. That seemed to help in all of our tests originally but we didn’t get any warnings etc. once the new firmware was put in.
We have only shot short bursts with ours, this will be our ceremony and toasts cam, but friends of ours have said they haven’t had any issues recording full ceremonies in direct sun light.
I know there can be issues with instlling firmware using a Mac. But, this is the regular way to install firmware on a Sony Alpha Camera. they have been using this method for over 15 years. It is really not that hard. download firmware, run firmware, connect camera, install firmware, check firmware, done.
If you are running an M1 Mac those aren’t the steps. It requires you to open the Kernel in safe mode on a restart to enable permissions for the software to be able to instal. In all of our other camera systems you placed the file on the SD card and installed the updates through the camera. This was a pain in the ass.
@@WeddingVideographyForBeginners I agree it is not easy with a MAC. My point is on a PC with windows it is the regular method and not very hard to do. Sony has never done the memory card upgrade method.
I'm so worried about getting this camera. At work, they gave me $2500 to spend on a camera. Need to film 1 hour of lectures at work with this and use it for photography. Wonder how reliable this is. Sounds like the issue might have been fixed but you are still getting the heat lamp.
We have used at almost every wedding we had this year. In 4k 24 we have never had the heat lamp come on. Just keep the high heat setting on, the screen flipped out and the HDMI cable door open, thats all we do and works just fine.
I think overall the A7IV is a much improved camera than the III. And with the 1.01 update I don't think you will see much of the overheating we experienced in our first tests. I definitely did not get rid of the camera.
This will be our ceremony and toasts cam. We have one FX3 and are getting another one, hopefully it ships before the season really ramps up. So we will have 2 FX3s and one A7IV. I have been using the A7IV for photos and it is really amazing in that regard. We probably wont need to film anything in 4k 60 though with it. We will leave that to the FX3s.
@@WeddingVideographyForBeginners I've got the s3 & a4 & I haven't had any overheating issues even before the update. The update was a breeze on windows. Thanks for your helpful reviews.
@@WeddingVideographyForBeginners ok. I couldn't believe my A7IV overheated during bride prep with intermittent shooting while on h.265 4k60 422 10bit. @@ericsbriggs Ill admit having a camera that you cant shoot at the higher settings is ridiculous. With that being said we havent had any issues since the update.

If you are video focused, not needing a photo video hybrid, I would recommend the FX3 over the A7SIII. With the fan it won't overheat.

It felt noticeably less warm while shooting, yes.
Living in AZ, 70 degrees is cold. I use a coat. I have to shoot outside in July in 120-125 degrees. None of my cameras overheated, except this one.

Man, what a disaster this update was for my M1 MBP. Never seen such a pain in the butt as this.
Right? I thought it was a little excessive.
Interesting how nobody acknowledges h,264 or h.265 codec usage in these tests. I would assume the camera needs to work harder using h.265.
It might, its harder on the CPU of the computer but we shoot everything in XAVC S 4K and that is h264.
