my mom freaks out when i come close to her without making any noise, she get scared and asks how i do this every time, i say that i don't know and it just feels natural to me, then i find this video and realize i've been fox walking for years, that's so cool
"Children under the age of 18 attempting anything from this video must be supervised by an adult." Oh no im 17 and fox walking somebody call the police
I never thought about it before but that is exactly how I walk all the time. I grew up hunting with my father and I guess I copied his way of silent walking. My husband always says he is going to put a bell around my neck lol. Julia
Julia Campbell I know this post is a year old...but I have always walked silently, I ended up scaring the crud out of everyone walking up on them, so I started carrying my keys on my belt loop. No more scaring people for the most part
I never knew that I walked like this as a kid. I guess I delevoped this skill after all those years of trying to sneak my way out of trouble and punishments.
Part of being a barefoot kid playing in the dirt. Did it a lot in the Army while stalking in the forest over dried leaves. It became a habit really. Kinda annoyed some people though.
I walk in a sort of personalized version of this. I'm a dancer (ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, musical theatre) and I have very light foot steps, even while running. I tend to walk in a sort of narrow stanced toe-heel pattern.
It looks almost elegant. I remember my sister and other girls constantly being told to keep their legs together, their feet pointing forward, and to put one foot in front of the other when walking - not for survival reasons, but because it looks more polished. Not so us boys! But I walked barefoot on gravel as a child many times, too, and soon learned to do it automatically. It's a good technique.
At 72 I am late in life to the joy of barefoot walking and hiking. Over the last year and a half I have toughened my feet and can walk confidently on trails in the woods. Gravel is still challenging and I have watched many videos on barefoot walking. I have tried this method with some success, but old feet don’t toughen like young ones. I have found being less timid and making my steps more normal helps me.
I unconsciously do the fox walk when bare foot because it feels more comfortable. Walking barefooted with my heels first hurt my feet so much since there's no thick sole. I always thought it was kinda strange how I'd change the style of my walk but it makes sense now.
I did not know what I was doing I just know it works. So it is fox walking. Thanks for that. I like walking on gravel also because of the pressure point I am pressing on. Great vid.
My mom and dad have a gravel driveway, I walk across it all the time and it’s actually how me and my two older sisters walk from growing up on a gravel driveway. Growing up in da UP I too run around barefoot most the time except the frigid winter. Funny to think I’ve been doing this the whole time and didn’t know it’s known as the fox walk. Thanks bud
Glad to find a name for this. We did this in the military for stalking. Not as quiet with boots on though. Got to be such a habit that it wore out the outsides of my boots first. Still do to this day with regular shoes.
I did this in the driveway barefoot and my mom asked me why I was walking like I had something up my butt. More people need to go outside barefoot. It’s such a good feeling. Especially when you don’t have to worry about bugs in the grass that bite or sting.
I actually learned how to fox walk by accident when I was bout 10 or so and I do it 24/7 people always said I walked really weird in school but I'd never actually have any sound when I walked
Animal Man you are a dude! Thanks for this video. I don't just walk anymore. I foxwalk! Everywhere. My achilles problem is clearing up. I didn't think I'd be able to run seriously again. I'm now checking out the ultramarathon calendars in anticipation.
Over 60 years ago an old true woodsman showed me this. I don't know why I don't do this walk unless I'm out in the country. Usually following animal trails etc. 99% of the time when in the country I'm wearing soft sole moccasins.
@@oliverdimartino7194 from the Minnetonka company. Mens mid high all leather. Like $60-70 They don’t come waterproof leather but I put a heavy rubbed in coating of spray on waterproofing. I do this like 3 times before I use them and let them dry outside in the shade. As they break in etc I just wear thicker socks. They work fine until the temperature get below freezing. There are some models that have a thin rubber sole which I’m sure would make them last a year or two easily just for hunting
Just ordered a pair of Minnetonka ankle high soft moccasin boots. After I waterproof them, I am Looking forward to trying out them in the woods. If they are as good as I have heard, I will get 1-2 more pairs.
You must have quite tough feet the way you go barefoot on that gravel! I am keen on walking barefoot, but I always associate it with warm weather, and I think it's a good way to make the most of the ground being warm in the middle of the summer. I like the way you flex your toes!
Huh, that's funny. I learned to do this when I was a kid by looking up "how to walk like a ninja" for fun. More than a decade later and it's a almost unconscious thing that I only remember I do when I accidentally freak someone out. Which is often!
My mother was a model and I just turned out to be a dumb Jarhead, but she talked about how to walk on a runway silently in heels with the same foot movement and it blew my mind! PS: That and learning how to braid hair was pretty dope.
I've learned this naturally (without knowing or searching about it) when i lived in an apartment, I didn't want anyone to know that I was there to avoid human interaction xD
I've already been doing this for a long time but I can't do it anymore because of the floors in new house are so squeaky like even the slightest tap will make a squeak
I tried to sneak through the woods wearing boots, but every few seconds there would be a loud snapping sound. It was almost impossible to avoid. But just walking normally with bare feet, not even trying to be quiet, SILENCE!
That's the "Shirt the carparks hot" run after a summers day at the beach! LOL - if your smart you quickly learn to try and walk the straight white lines in the carpark too because they were cooler. Why we didn't put shoes on? I don't know, but kids like a challenge I guess??
+Belinda Weber That's hilarious! Also, I didn't know you called it a "carpark" over there! We say "parking lot" around here.........things like this amuse me
People who live in old apartments and want to be considerate to their neighbors need to watch this video. Just a little bit can go a long way. Most people don't realize how much noise they make when their heel drops.
What do you do when you feel with the blade and it *doesn't* feel good? When I'm running in shoes and hit a hole or something, I sort of collapse my leg so it doesn't put any weight on the foot and take a quick step with the other foot. Or are you balanced so well that you just lift your foot up and set it down somewhere else? Does it interrupt your forward motion?
Thanks for the great question! The fox walk is designed for a slow to normal walk. It keeps your body aligned and the stress on the muscles and off the joints. It is a very fluid, efficient way of moving. The motion shouldn't stop if you are doing it right. You feel with the front foot as you put it down and your body weight is on the back foot until you are totally sure the front foot is in a good spot, then you begin to shift your weight forward. If you begin to put the front foot down and it doesn't feel right, you can pivot or slide the foot over, or adjust the pressure to a different part of the foot by using your muscles. I do the same thing as you when I'm trail running to avoid sprained ankles and such! Hope you found this helpful.
Karl K try having a mostly straight back so you’re not leaning forward, this will put most of your weight on your back leg that’s secure. Once your blade hits something you just put your weight back on your back leg and manoeuvre you front leg to somewhere safe. Hope this helps ;)
So i don't have gravel driveway, but the best thing I got is a wood chip thing that spans across a wall. I've been practicing, and I have been getting faster walking around it. How the hell do you do it so fast without the fear of getting hurt?
I think this is how I walk barefoot naturally. I've noticed I tend to walk with my heel when I have shoes on and with my toes when barefoot but I'm not quite sure it's Fox Walking.
I thought he was about to literally say “In New York everyone has footwear! Even the foxes!” 🤣😂🤣 Id love that so goddamn much lol If they made some lunatic bill pass that states ALL animal life MUST be assigned footwear at all times 🤣
my driveway is made out of rock pieces that were made out of a road a couple years ago my grandpa told his kids to go get tons of rocks in their own barrow and dump it in the driveway i can walk through it barefoot because i do it all the time
i learned this naturally as a kid being barefoot all the time too. persuing primitive skills education as an adult i relearned it. I think this is the main reason people have knee and back problems. the achilies tendon is your body's shock absorber, when you heel strike you completely negate this function.
I use to do this at my grandparents when I didn’t wanna put my shoes on, it was a bad choice though xD and they aren’t bits of gravel, there actual sharp big rocks

Wait that's fox walk? That's how I naturally walk. Wow 😁 cool. I walk like my ancestors
