Your smile is like the sunshine down on a broken chain, Your bouncing baby Indigo won’t know the song you sang.
You rock and roll a Boulder shoulder all them heavy stones, you rock the baby maybe like you roll when rolling bones.
You’re the best friend that a dog could ask for. The best Doc out on holiday, an energetic medic who brings laughter in to that gloomy bay, you’re a Salmon who swims waters white, a light to guide home late at night, The hero from a dusty tome, who passed through every town around to build himself a trusty home. ❤️
awww! Love this comment!!!! You a songwriter?
@@MikesMusicMethod nope, not at all, I just really appreciated the detail you put into teaching Townes’ work. Thanks to you I can play some of his best poems note for note! You are a great teacher and your energy and attitude are inspiring! I figured a simple song in Townes style would have as much meaning to it as how meaningful it was to have such an inspiring teacher show me how to play his hits! ❤️
You got me feeling like Rust Cohle two beers deep. Great lesson brother
dont know the reference, but i'll take it! Appreciate it and glad I could help. If you're finding value in the channel consider a contribution via paypal or Patreon. buys me time to make more! What song next?
@@MikesMusicMethod A lot of people (including me and this person) have somewhat recently been introduced to Townes Van Zandt through the TV series "True detective" (which has a pretty great soundtrack all around), Rust Cohle is a character in the series, probably a lot of your views are indirectly caused by this series
@@MikesMusicMethod You should definitely watch that show, it's one of the best series of all time (I know that these words are mostly empty, but at least for me it's the best, and I'm studying visual cultures, so you can trust me).
@@MrRiver08 appreciate the recommendation. But i watch absolutely zero television. I use to love film, even shitty B sides I'd find enjoyment in, but about 15 years ago I just have lost all patience for it. Even after 15 minutes of good film I find myself standing up and walking around, haha. But I think I caught a bit of a few episodes as my wife watched it.
@@MikesMusicMethod "Well, whatever, nevermind." :) Alright then, at least you have patience for the guitar - good for us.
I've been playing guitar for a year and a half and honestly, the most impactful part of this lesson was when you had to work through a part and figure out how to sing/play it and sync it up. It's important for us beginners to see that veteran players are human too! Gives me hope
haha. Thanks for this note. More than once in a while I trip up, and typically I edit those moments out. Maybe I'll keep some more of them in just to show how flustered the vets get too. Keep at it, Jack! Let me know if I can help in any other way.
FIRST SONG IM LEARNING ON GUITAR!!! THANK YOU MIKE 🎉🎉🎉
first song!? Daaang. that's gonna be a hard one for your first song! Good luck and lmk how else i can help!
Great lessons man! Your energy is great! Thank you so much for helping me learn this great music
thanks and ur welcome, Stevie! Glad i can help and that the videos are fruitful! lmk what songs next and please consider monthly support if u continue to get value from the channel.
Man, every video you make I love your energy. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Will do! I 'm glad you're getting value from the channel Tyller. Please sub and like and consider a contribution! www.paypal.com/donate/buttons/manage/DDSNNKQVTWWS6
What's your guitar journey been? What song or content should I throw up next?
@@MikesMusicMethod absolutely man, I’m currently unemployed but as soon as I can afford to I intend to make a contribution. If I had found an online teacher like you when I started 4 years ago I would have improved a lot faster.
I'm so glad I just found your channel!! Hard to find good lessons on these old songs, can't wait to try Mississippi john hurt
Also I have this same guitar! What a good day
Glad to have ya! I've got over 200 tutorials on all our favorite outlaw country, folk and blues players. Tabs are all on the website based on the value for value model (pay what ya can). Haha, brilliant minds...
@MikesMusicMethod cheers man, you'll be hearing from me!
throwing my next paycheck at your channel. thank you so much for this man.
Thanks man. I appreciate that. This channel is a labor of love and any value for value is appreciated!! What song next?!
Im self taught and can pick up my guitar and play almost every song i like and use different tunings but mostly half step down and c# but i watch videos like this and marty schwartz and carl brown as entertainment but frfr carl brown is a genius and an amazing teacher a bit technical at times but great but after saying all that you teach almost as well as carl asking a fraction of the price...good deal in my opinion so dont be ashamed to "plug" yourself and your abilities mate.
Thanks, Joe. I have no idea who Carl Brown is but glad there are other great players and teachers out there. And yup, not afraid to plug myself, I just have no desire to hit the social media super hard, no to make click baity videos. Slow and steady and rock solid tutorials, and hopefully people who consume will realize the value and consider monthly support. Happy picking, lmk how else i can help.
Love this song, and now can finally play it... great instructional!
yes! so glad. Makes me happy that so many are learning from the channel.
TWZs musical nuances are friggin uniquely special, a true master of his art 🎨 ✨️
thank you so much for doing this "pick" lesson. I'm lucky enough to have a good ear and sense of time and being able to hear you do these in"teaching mode" really help me alot. Now for the work.

finally a good lungs tutorial on youtube. thanks man!!
you're welcome! Yup, I took some time and it's pretty darn accurate so enjoy! Sub and like and consider a value for value contribution! What's your guitar journey been Allen? Any other songs you'd like me to get to that don't have good tutorials done for it.
I feel like I just found gold with this channel. Townes Van Zandt and Blaze foley just need Modest Mouse lessons and I will never have to look at another UA-cam channel again lol
Dax riggs did a "simplified " version of this beautiful song tuned down half a step
Thanks a lot for this great tutorial. After watching the series true detective 2 years ago, I wanted to learn that song but found nothing about it. Now I can start practicing, I'm really grateful to you for that!
Townes is in my top 3. Dive into the dudes catalog. amazing. I've tackled several of his songs here. And let me know what other songs I could tackle for you as well. Welcome aboard!

Cheers Mike! Then we go running... really good memorising concept I had never considered before. Super effective! Big love from the uk
what song next Ben!? If you're getting value from the channel please consider monthly support no matter how small. I wanna crank out more of these!
Mike! Thank you very much man for your videos. I’ve been teaching myself since I was a teenager but was in limbo for a bit. I’ve been trying to incorporate more pickin’ in my playing and you’ve been a great teacher. Congrats on the baby. My son, Waylon, was just born two weeks ago.😎🤘
Tim, congrats! Fatherhood is the best. Glad my channel is helping you out. If you're getting value please consider becoming a monthly contributor no matter how small the amount (via paypal or patreon), I'd love to crank out more videos and make this my day job. Where ya from Tim? Best of luck with Waylon!
Nice tutorial, thanks mate!
ur welcome. Please sub, like, considering supporting the channel and lmk what tunes next.
Hey! Love your videos! I'm growing so much with guitar watching your tutorials. Hard songs to learn but you make it really clear and easy to follow. I would suggest maybe adding time stamps or however people add those time like markers for each new measure or part cause I have to repeat them many times to understand it and it would be dope to see it labeled when I hover over the timeline so I can quickly go back. Im working on If I Needed You right now. Either way thanks for creating these videos. Will be donating to keep it going!
amazing feedback. I had the thought about two weeks ago. and you're the second person to mention this. I think time stamps would be very helpful. thanks for that. And, so glad you're enjoying the channel! Any songs you'd like to see on the list? And please consider a contribution to help out! Thanks, man. Happy picking! I always get stupid excited when people are getting real value from the channel. Encouraging! Spread the pickin' love!
Hey mike, you’re the absolute best - in college rn but will donate when i get rich and famous someday
haha, thanks man. Donate when you're out of college! Doesnt every spare penny go to student loan payments!? ;) thanks, man. Keep picking and lmk how else i can help you out on the journey.
these lessons work on my acoustic guitar just fine.
You certainly can, thats how Townes did it. I was just giving you crisp sound at a consistent volume. I don't have the best gear to mic my acoustic properly, and I move too much.
just found this channel, now I gotta learn every TVZ song you know :D
welcome aboard! I got plenty of Townes up here and I'll keep cranking 'em out. lmk if there's any of his songs i dont have up that you'd like to see.
Thanks!
Jakob. you're welcome!
Hi Mike . Hai un figlio meraviglioso ! Bravo!!!
Figlia! Il suo nome è Indigo. Ma in inglese non abbiamo finali "o" verso "a". "indigo" è il colore indaco. (Translated. I dont know much Italian)
@@MikesMusicMethod Hi Mike. I said your daughter Indigo is wonderful. Her name is beautiful too.
In Italian her name is Azzurra. Ciao Mike
thanks mike !
you're very welcome. Consider the tip jar!
this is my first video of you, but I enjoyed your teaching style and energy, subscribed
Welcome aboard, chicken picker. Thanks. There's a ton of content to dive into. I'd check out the playlist "Travis picking tutorials" and watch the first several, as well as the video "travis picking primer". Or just hop around by song. Hi thanks, greets from bavaria, germany
you're welcome. Please sub, like, and consider support. What song can i do for ya next? any good modern german folk artists?
Thank you so much for this lesson! Just became my first ever song on guitar:)
so glad to hear! This aint an easy first song, man! haha how did it go!?
the tone could be muuuch better but it went surprisingly well (I did cheat and play the bass for a couple of years first though haha). but seriously, your lessons are amazing! super clear and well paced. thanks again!
Geeeez, Man, what a lesson! Thank you!
You're welcome! Sub, like and consider monthly support no matter how modest. What song next, Timur?
@@MikesMusicMethod I've already tried to buy you a beer or two for this lesson, Mike, but apparently I got to change my iPin at an ATM first (but soon...).
There's this awesome band from Texas called Khruangbin - I'm sure you know them, but if you don't, this is my recommendation. Mark Speer is a hell of a good guitarist, he has some magnificent themes, especially on The Universe Smiles Upon You and Con Todo El Mundo albums. They are getting more and more popular, but there are only a few lessons on YT about them, so yeah... Khruangbin, please. :)
@@MrRiver08 Nope. actually have never heard them. I'll check it out, but a few minutes into the listen I'm not hearing much fingerpicking, just really cool lead playing and the building of a lush sonic landscape.
@@MikesMusicMethod Primarily he uses a pick, and he usually does tremolo picking, but there are a few songs played fingerstyle. For example:

Thanks dude. I hope your page blows up asap

You're killing me with the mnemonics. I like to drink coffee! I'm trying to play guitar here! HA!
Subscribed!!!!!
aww yeah! Sub and like. The dumb "likes" make a difference. At least the overlords tell me they do. Please consider a contribution! I know that that certainly makes a difference. ;) What song next, Job, since now your days are swifter than a post, they flee away, and see no good. Except my next video of course.
Hi Baby Indigo, from your global family (your Dad’s great, never forget that).
Best comment to date. Love it. Hopefully one day Indi will be a picker and learning from this channel!
Learning to play my first guitar, this video is SUPER helpfull for a beginner like me. Thanks a lot for this, dude! Also, where i can find the tabs ?
Awesome. Welcome. Dive in! I've got over 150 tutorials. Tabs are all free at my website. mikesmusicmethod.com. Also check out the Travis Picking and Flat Picking playlists as well as the How to Get Better at guitar series. And join the discord!! Welcome
Have you got any early Dylan Country bluesie stuff like his 1st album 'Bob Dylan" (fixin to die etc) or 'The Freewheelin Bob Dylan' - not seen many, if any lessons on all that acoustic stuff 🤔
Song to Woody, i was young when i left home, working on moonshiner, girl from north country is up there. But i think just the one from the very first record.
search "mike's music method bob dylan" and thanks! Because I need to create a Dylan playlist on my channel. i've done enough to warrant that!~
and...corrina corrina, baby let me follow you down! haha, i forgot I did all these.
@@MikesMusicMethod sweet! I've only just found TVZ and am just blown away by the dude. So appreciate these lessons - deffo check out the Dylan stuff too 🤙
I don't wanna use a flatpick, I wanna use those rings like Townes Van zandt does in the heartworn highways AWESOME TUTORIAL ANYWAY I SOUND AMAZING, gonna give you money very soon, I want to contribute. You've at least doubled the quality of my playing.
Sonia! So glad to hear I was able to help! Yup, whenever you have the means. Even a buck a month would help! You can do a monthly via paypal or patreon. Links in video description. AND...Townes doesnt use the finger picks on this tune! He uses a flat pick, i promise. But the majority of his songs, yes, he puts those funny little metal condoms on his fingers. ;)
@@MikesMusicMethod Done ! Well Townes would probably be okay with me not using a flatpick for his song, he was a pretty free spirit :p I've got the rhythm down now and I'm starting to put the voice over it. The fact that you post the tabs as well as break the songs down carefully in video and then provide an opportunity to play along with you at different tempos really works extremely well for me. I'm gonna go for Pancho and Lefty when this one's perfect.
@@zapatoshigs5792 Best of luck. let me know how it goes and let me know what songs I could tackle next for ya. haha, and no. Townes wouldnt care. He'd probably insist you use a nail file or a razor blade if we got him drunk enough and in on this conversation.
@@MikesMusicMethod Well you've provided a lot of material to work with already (I'll contribute again when I get round to another song). Hmmm well I've always wanted to be able to play Bob Dylan's rocks and gravel if you're looking around for some material, I think it's a drop D tuning of some kind but I've failed to do it so far. It's very pretty. Thanks again for your work anyway, hope you keep doing stuff like this, some of the best quality guitar tutorials on youtube imo
Awesome video thanks man! Have you listened to the live version from the Old Quarter? Noticed it sounds a lot faster. As a newbie, I'm trying to figure it out, is he just playing faster and adding in some more spice? I love the live version to death and would love to attempt something like that
hey buddy. thanks for reaching out. these types of questions are a way more productive back and fourth on the Discord. join there! So yes, the live at the OQ album is fantastic. I didnt do a very deep listen and analysis but just giving them a comparison they're really not that different. The thing that stands out the most to me is the guitar tone. I susually hate the sound of acoustic guitars live but this one sounds pretty darn good. Yes, some of the fills and lines he's doing are. a bit different. Every great player has a natural feel and instinct that will change the performance from day to day. But honestly, learning the studio version I have and just getting better at guitar in general is gonna have you sounding awesome on this one! lmk if that was helpful. If there's any particular part of the song you just NEED to learn off the live version, haha...let me know!
❤️❤️❤️
thank you, handsome.
Any chance of velvet voices? My favourite song by him.
love that tune, but not sure what you want me to do. If there is a guitar in the tune it's buried behind all the production and not finger picked. Any rare live versions out there?
"co fu fu" i like that
it was after that bumbled Trump tweet where he wrote "covfefe" and everyone said he lost his mind on cheetohs or something. Covfufu 9.11
Thank you for the lesson! You're not punching like a girl, you're punching like a guy who doesn't know how to punch.
lolol. sounds about right. And you're welcome! what next?
@@MikesMusicMethod I've been wondering too 'cause these lessons are too damn good!
@@MikesMusicMethod Are you into R L Burnside at all? I'd love one of Poor Black Mattie or anything else really.
Is this song able to be played fingerpicking as opposed to using a pick? I’ve never used one
you can play it with your fingers. It's a personal choice. But keep in mind there is a considerable difference. The attack you get with a pick will never be exactly the same with fingers. But hey...Mark Knopfler does amazing work with just his fingers.
just a little busy for me. I will come back tho. thx
check out my Travis Picking and/or Flat picking playlist for easier tunes! you'll get there!
Hey Mike, thanks again. Any chance to get a tutorial for Snake Song too?
yup. it's on the list as well, so i'll bump it. very similar feel. I'll get to it soon-ish. The list is long with such great songs! Please consider the value for value model with monthly support so I'm bought more time to crank these out! Thanks, for the rec Dim.
Hi mike
Can you make tutorial on this song (A.A Bondy - world without end)
Never heard it before. Pretty obscure tune, but nice! I dont think many people know this tune and not sure how many views it would get. It takes me a couple of days worth of work to tab out a song, make the video, edit, etc. If you're willing to make a donation I'll add it to the list. Otherwise there's too many other popular requests on the list already! Thanks for requesting though. I'll keep listening and maybe I'll fall in love and wanna do it. ;)
@@MikesMusicMethod i would love to donate but paypal and other payment methods is banned in my country (iraq)
Where can I find the tab you use?
MikesMusicMethod.com and they're all free. Click the description under each video for more links.
@@MikesMusicMethod Um, no they're not, Mike! Why do you keep claiming this? I'm good with paying (as are most folks), and you've done a great job on this tune, but your initial claim that the tabs were "free" is simply no longer true, right? It requires a membership, so that's a bit misleading. You might wanna update your initial information to reflect that fact, so that people don't get frustrated.
Your content is amazing, as a well intended advice, stop asking for the money. Or at least don't do it in the middle of the lesson
Thanks for the feedback, but the research is clear: the number one reason people don't give to charity is because they aren't asked. These videos take anywhere from 6 to 24 hours of labor. Of course I'm going to ask for donations. Why wouldn't I? Usually it's 1 to 2 minutes. Feel free to skip it. But also realize I could have all this stuff behind a paywall. Wanna pay for every tab, or take 2 seconds to click a button and skip the donation pitch?
I appreciate the feedback, but I'm baffled by it. But I promise my tone is light and I'm glad you're getting value from the channel, man! Be well and lmk how else I can help ya on the journey.
Where's the tab bro??
They're all at my website. www.molaromusic.com/tabs
@@MikesMusicMethod cheers man 🤘
This song and Rake both have a deceptively difficult cadence. Just singing them I have trouble staying in step.
I'd be happy to talk about the melody to either song if that'd be helpful. And yes! Rake is on the list.
I was playing guitar for years before I knew what the hell a "flatpick" was
lol. same here, man.
People would probably want to give you money more, if you didn’t spend so much of your guitar tutorial giving them a sales pitch on why they should donate money to you
I kindly disagree. 22 minutes of television gives you 8 minutes of ads. I gave what? A 33 minute free lesson and one pitch for the exact same content your enjoying. Expect the same amount or more in the future from my channel.
@@MikesMusicMethod Expect for people to get annoyed with you & watch other guitar channels who don’t do that instead!
@@kilometer780 Appreciate the input and feedback, but I disagree. I have no shame in spending 40 seconds asking for value for value when I'm giving out hours of free content and guitar tabs. And i think most people are cool with this and completely understand.
@@kilometer780 stick to your super awesome long boarding shenanigans there pal. Great lesson always man 🙏
