Hey Dave, My mom is currently Stage 4 Metastasized Breast Cancer. She's been fighting the fight for about 5 years and has gone in and out of remission a few times. We received the unfortunate news that it came back and has spread aggressively and that things aren't looking good a few months back. I went to visit her during her most recent trip to Moffitt to get an aggressive chemotherapy last week. She sat me down and told me that she was allowing this last chemo session to go through, but that she wants to spend the rest of her time at home and not in a hospital, so they are bringing in Hospice to take care of her for any pain or nausea that she may have for her remaining time. Shortly after explaining this to me, my step dad sent in a volunteer that was in the hall with a guitar and told her that I had been learning for about a year now and to go play us a song. When this woman came in, she asked us what song we wanted to hear, but I think we both knew we weren't ready to pick a song yet. She decided to start playing a song and by choice chose "Stand By Me." It was perfect, as she just told me she wanted to start to comfort her symptoms rather than address the treatment of being sick. As hard as it was, I had just told her moments before that I will support her decision because I wanted her to be comfortable. For this song to be chosen, it was meant to be because I had basically just told her that I stood by her decision (even though it hurt me selfishly). It was the most beautiful/saddest moment of my life with her that I will never forget. While the song was being played, my mom and I cried, hugged, I kissed her on her forehead, and we even laughed how pitifully sad we looked blowing our noses and sniffling, etc. But I will never forget this song so I purchased for her a music box for Christmas that plays this song. (What do you get a terminally ill mother for Christmas?) I figured a music box that she can listen to any time that might remind her of this moment together. I just want to share this story because you've been my go-to teacher for over a year now on UA-cam along with a lifetime subscription to GZ2H Premium. The fact that you have already posted this song and it's so easy to play, I'll be able to play it for her on Christmas this year. You make a difference for people learning to play guitar. And now, you will have made a difference in my life for a moment that I will not forget and you'll always be a part of this moment for me. For that.... I Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Jason Buchanan
Wow. You're pretty awesome with presenting a logical and clear tutorial. Seriously better than most other vids, including those by teachers and tutors in music with decades behind them. You just explain things in a straightforward manner, and it's easy for anyone to follow. Wish there were more like you!
I'm legit crying rn. I was looking for tutorials about stand by me but they were complicated as hell, until I found this vid. This is my mom's favorite song now I can play for her.
