Well, the Italian climate is very favorable to grow tomatoes, you just need to water them quite a bit. A sun-ripened cherry tomato can be as sweet as a grape. Easy to grow and high yield = cheap food for the masses. If the weather was better in Ireland, they would grow tomatoes, too.
Crazy that tomatoes had to bounce off the Old World to come back into the new. But, that's how we were connected; to Britain and Europe and very little of what was happening in the rest of the Americas.
Better is the story of 'turkey'. They come from South America, but are called turkey in english (and in USA) because they come to England from Turkey (a country).
@@MassimoShire1981 Exactly. There is lots more to it. Btw: Got Spaghetti Napoli for my main meal today. With my own tomatoes from my own plants grown in pots on my balcony. Delicious. And in a few days i will have a different pasta meal with melted cheese and zucchini (from the backyard) and peppers that also grew in pots. Fantastic.
Kind of crazy to think how iconic tomatoes are in many Italian food, despite originating an entire ocean away from them.

Tomatoes have high amount of 'umami', and because of that it enhances other foods taste. it is why some use ketchup on everything 🙂

isn't it ironic that ancient people were scared of tomatoes and potatoes alleged toxicity, but they were ingesting mercury and arsenic?
Never stop making videos! No matter what you talk about, I'm all for it!
Thanks! I really appreciate your comment. More videos on the way.
I can't imagine Italian food without tomatoes.
I guess they just choked down bare pasta 😆
Green pesto existed yet, also you can make carbonara, and cheese with pasta.
