Haven't lived in Blackburn for 25 years now & it breaks my heart to see it now. I remember Mercers, Reidy's, Waves, the Spiral ( meeting your mates by the spiral!!) Loved working on the 3 day market -all gone. Such a shame, but thanks for the memories
This made me really emotional. I was brought up in Blackburn. I've lived abroad and down south the past 8 years and it's changed so much. I remember watching Titanic at the old cinema. Thank you for this thank you so much x
Hi Gemma. Thank you for your comment on my video. I can imagine you being perhaps sad to see how the town is now? Really, the town centre doesn't give a true image of the town, the rest is a disgrace Gemma! Thanks again for watching.
I have fond memories of travelling around Blackburn as a kid and going to Woolies. It went downhill when they "modernised" the mall and the old market was the only historical thing the town had left which they destroyed. It's all soulless and corporate now.
I'm afraid you are correct Louis. I went on the 'market' last Thursday when my cousin was up from Northamptonshire to get some Sarsparilla drops and Coltsfoot Rock. It really is a soulless place. The stall holders are doing their best but I remember the jolly atmosphere that even the 3 day market had. Going down Darwen Street is apart from The Postal Order appalling with fast food joints. I often wonder how it is that multiple properties selling the same stuff can make a profit after paying what must be extortionate rental charges?? Can anyone help me out here please.
I don't remember the exact place where Woolworths was located and that lovely cafe with the circular windows. It's either because my memory is hazy or they changed it beyond recognition.
@@louissmith1393 Wollies was on the corner of Church Street across from the White Bull and the El Grecco cafe was near Lord Square near the gas showrooms.
Oh okay. I miss going in the old El Greco and experiencing the atmosphere. It's the smallest things like the cigarette smoke that I miss. (This was in the days before the smoking ban.) There was a new El Greco nearby that's now closed. The food was decent but it just wasn't the same.
Nice. Gosh can't belive it on how much its changed wow. Moved in 1980. You should do one on greatharwood is everything still there or has that changed too. Please do one on greatharwood. Its so nice that youve done a video we can look back on our childhood memories thanks
Thanks for watching my video and for commenting. I don't live in Blackburn now. I used to go to Great Harwood health centre in my NHS van each day between 1992 and 2014. Happy days.
From Blackburn originally. Haven't been back for a number of years now so interesting to see how the place had change. Sad that Mercers have gone now, and I remember when Waves was all shiny and new, never mind them knocking THAT down. Used to go as a teenager. No matter how much money they've spent on it, it still seems run down to me in many ways. Happy memories of Blackburn and going to St Mary's College.
The same thing happened in Bradford. In the 70s, 80s, and early 90s it was a wonderful place to visit (contrary to what you may hear). All the shops and areas we used to love are gone. I guess both Bradford and Blackburn councils have a lot to answer for.
Will Scarlett. You can say that again Will! Our once proud Brewery Thwaites has just had its buildings and fittings destroyed by bloody travellers on their way to Appleby. Problem was, the Police basically allowed them to destroy historic buildings that now will be demolished and a bloody supermarket built on the site. Thanks for watching my video Will.
I haven't been to Blackburn town centre for about 30 years, it's changed so much, going back even further about 40 or more year I can remember going to the baths with my cousins, so it must be the ones you were talking about with the rough floor.
Please do one on gratharwood please there was a small mills there my dad used to work there is that still there, the liaby the swimming baths the docters Sergey still there and all the old shops wounder if its all changed. Please could you do one on greatharwood would love to see it. Oh there used to be a big swwt shop there too
in the 80s i used to go to blackburn alot from chorley for the night life and pubs.i went back a couple of years ago every thing i remember is gone.the only thing whats still there is ewood park but that area has changed.
at this time mercers was still open but in a different location , mercers sadly closed in september 2015 due to no business as it was out of town and a new entertainer toy shop opened may 2016 , very sad 😪
Thank you. The social engineering that has taken place over the last 50 odd years has failed simply because of this country's failure to insist that people coming here to live aren't expected to learn English, abide by our rules and contribute 100% to the country's economy. In other words, like every other country in the world expects when WE go to live there! Now of course we have illegal immigrants actually given more freedom than indigenous people!! Rest in peace England.
Blackburn will always be out heritage ..grandparents history ..it will never leave us born and bred...with fond happy memories..them memories can never be taken away👍
Totally agree. Add the fact that a large proportion of the town's population simply have no interest in the town's history and you end up with a town like this.
We aren’t interested in the history because it ain’t our history bro. We r only conserned about the future because when it becomes our town and your people are all gone Blackburn will become glorious. Every day it gets better and better 👊🏾
Well if you had the slightest morals and decency in yourself, you could’ve told him the purpose of filming before the shopkeeper approaching and challenging you, which you clearly didn’t like as evident in the video from from your tone of voice.
I am from Libya I lived in Blackburn 1 year and i missed it is my favorite place in Uk .
BLACKBURN I LOVE YOU.

Yes a crime has been committed in Blackburn stretching back 40 years and no one will be held accountable. Thanks for sharing your memories.
Biker Paul Blackburn market was the soul of the town why on earth did they Knock it down what a shame it's just not the same
Man, my old town is nothing like it once was, is that progress ?. I happen to think its gone backwards.and I prefer to remember it has it once was.

I was born in Blackburn.
It makes me cry, too.

We had our wedding do at the Vulcan 1979.
I can imagine that that was fabulous.
@29:34 I used to park my bike up under there too, one day I got a fucking parking ticket ! Bastards.
Nothing better to do! They need to book all those on yellow lines in Whalley Range and Audley Range!!
Most Towns/Cities are in the same situation.
public seating few and far between. must be hard for elderly tom
Its not the same. 😢
2 years later and both waves and BHS now gone!

Very enjoyable..you forgot about mentioned about good old Woolworths...
You do a great job, But the town has long since been lost to this crazy multiculturism, and it has failed miserably.

Uneducated comment

Blackburn is a dump now. Partial thanks to the the clueless council

You should’ve asked for permission before filming and arguing with chap in the shop, it’s private land he could’ve told you to get out, if he wanted.
Well he didn't did he!
