  • Welcome to video #2 of our Spring Buyer's Guide Series! Today we're check out the best soft plastics for Spring bass fishing! From senkos to Flukes, big swimbaits to Bait Finesse, we're talking all about soft baits!

One comment - in addition to tiny light Texas rigs for the little TRD baits, don’t forget the free rig. Those little bouyant Z Man baits are incredible with a light downshot weight on a free rig! Definitely a technique worth trying while everyone else is throwing dropshot/t rig/ned.

In 2 years I have learned more from these 2 guys than most people learn by exp in a lifetime. I started with small baits not knowing what im doing to being able to notice water clarity, wind and sun conditions and what the bass want in the water I am fishing. This knowledge is worth thousands of dollars in training and hundreds of hours of trial and error. Thak you both.

IMO, the absolutely most versatile soft plastic bait is the Z-Man Bang StickZ!!! These are VERY buoyant, unlike the ZinkerZ. So, you can cut a Bang StickZ in half and get a durable and buoyant Finesse TRD AND a TicklerZ! At full size Bang StickZ are AWESOME too! Thus, with one bag of six Bang StickZ you can fish the Ned Rig, the Neko Rig, the Tokyo Rig, and the Jika Rig!!! Heck, use Bang StickZ with a weedless wacky jig too, no O-rings needed. Bang StickZ are DYNAMITE!!!

That Dark Sleeper works great for trout as well. Last fall my 11 yr old daughter caught a 7 1/2 pound Cutthroat trout with one. It works great for river and stream fishing, especially for kids because it's very weedless. Nothing ruins a fishing trip for kids like getting snagged every other cast. They look so much like a sculpin, it's just a natural choice for folks using spinning and baitcasting gear for big trout. We smash the barb down when using them for trout as well. Tight lines y'all!

Hey Chuck. I wish point fishing from the bank were easier as I fish from the bank when I don't have enough time to launch my boat. That said, many times the "sweet spot" of the point is at the very end, especially if said point has a shelf on the end or drops into a main channel. It's possible to do well from shore when they're holding to the side of a point in current (or if there's isolated structure on that point), but unfortunately many times when I locate point fish they're out pretty far. Especially on those long sloping points.
I'm not sure if your home lake gets drawn down much, but one thing you could try (if you don't have any way to see the point with electronics) is go back on Google earth and see if there is a low water time that would allow you to see if there is something that would hold fish on said point. Here in Arkansas some of our lakes fluctuate 40+ feet, so you can visually locate rock formations and brush piles on G. Earth without graphing.
I'm certainly not on Tim or Matts level at all, but I hope this helps some.

I love Senko's and swimbaits, which is why i pour my own baits, some from AI Angling and others, but yea being able to pour my own baits is a ton cheaper in the long run, i get what i want and how i want it, mainly because i don't like salt and don't see any need for it, salt to me is filler and a way for bait companies to sell more baits because they rip and tear easier. But deffinately love seeing what works out there and the tips for different color pigments.
Oh, Hellgramites and other bug's i'm surprised more people don't use em tbh, can even get water strider plastic bugs that will sit on the top of the water, and fishing it with a baitcaster or a spinning reel AS IF your are fishing it like a fly fishing rod with light line. Its technical but fun.

If you boyz really wanna go finesse make your own swing heads with tiny hooks and small swivels and rounded split shots. Take your smallest swivel take it apart keep the clip part, then take your hook put it on the clip, then take your split shot and pinch it on the clip in the center Thier now you have a baby swinghead. Now any style micro crawfish will be standing in fight position. Boys try it you'll catch the biggest and most finicky bass or any fish for that fact not to eat it. Good luck thanks for all you do. Michigan Saginaw bay rocks.

Dark Sleeper is legit. Also, hack to storing them is use the Plano Edge Frog box, and you can hang them vertically!

Hey Matt, I think I have a solution for Texas rigging those micro finesse baits. The new VMC Redline Neko hooks with a keeper come in size 6 and size 4. Super small. I just ordered some. Hope this helps.

The 3" Senko has smashed for me in spring. Throw it in dirt shallow pockets behind weeds & under trees. I've caught 6lbers doing that & 4" blue gill. They just don't think about it. It's not intrusive & doesn't make them warry.

Ah the old, keep it simple adage true as always. As we seen another 47 new baits to contemplate buying. … I wonder how many have went broke or divorced because of these guys hahaha. 😂 I can say the keep it simple theory works in the stick bait category… or the good old “if I can only have one” works there too.

BFD might be a " newer" thing. Because of my limited income I will be using my light and ultra light spinning gear. Hasn't let me down over 40 years. Mule baits has some really great smaller stuff.

I need to set "Welcome back to Tactical Bassin" as my ringtone. As much as I love Senkos I'm starting to see them in new Yamamoto Baits packaging at my Wal-Mart and am disappointed that they are still quite expensive and they've reduced the count on the 5 inch from 10 to 7 to a pack.
