The low power is managed with its perfect gearing. You didn’t mention that. Riding on the beach? Come on. I live in Colorado riding technical trails at elevation and the gearing and low seat height are there for a reason. Dabbing on an off camber hillside makes that seat height what you want. And I’m 5’11”. You have good content but I think your bias doesn’t let you see the potential.

    • @AlexSimmons11c

No bias at all, I love Yamaha and I actually really like the old school stuff like this haha! I wasn't trying to say it was a bad bike at all, far from it! I was simply asked why I do not usually recommend it as a beginner dual-purpose, and that simply is just because after years of trying to put people on the TW vs most of the competition, people just generally pick a, XT250, KLX250, CRF230/250 etc.
It's a great bike for the right purpose, just not so popular usually with new riders, thats all! Thanks so much for the input!

Never said it wasn’t top notch quality, or a great value for the money especially used. The fact is simply that when I have offered it alongside other similar size category dual purpose motorcycles, people have USUALLY preferred other bikes, that’s all. You know, I think the main reason I have seen anyone choose the other bikes over the TW, is they are able to reach higher speeds for highway travelling. The bike gets a lot of attention wherever I go and most seem to like it because the of the styling. I admit, it doesn't have all the new fancies that the newer bikes have but I think that is what draws a lot of folks to it. Simplicity and durability. Motorcycling at it's simplest. I actually did a video between the TW and the XT250 because I found that during the pandemic, there was a waiting list on the TW and the XT250's were still sitting on the showroom floor. What made it more interesting was that the XT was only $500 more than the TW and for that amount of money, there were massive upgrades between the bikes. Here's the video if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/dKGQS9rcoBw/v-deo.html I think it's funny though, You don't recommend the TW, but I recommend it to everyone! Great video and thanks for taking the time to explain it all! Best Regards! Matt

Alex, I am sitting here, giggling at all of the wrath that has come forth from your video. Giggling in a good way, mind you but still amused. I bought a used TW this summer and have started riding it, mainly on roads at this point. The thing that truly amazes me is the following for this bike, people of all ages and level of experience. For me, it is a perfect way to get back on a motorcycle in a reasonably safe way after being away 40 years. The range of people who have these amazes me and in all cases, they staunchly defend it. As people mentioned, try to find one used or new. I'm sure that its popularity is related to its simplicity. As you stated, there are higher performance and probably prettier options out there. This one is like the "Little Engine that Could".

The TW200 is an extremely very very extremely great bike, yamaha is very cautious on changing anything about it due to the volume they move, and the loyalty of owners...there are shops all over japan that sell and service ONLY the TW...the versatility alone has kept it the same since 87 with the exception of the front disk...USA grips with the larger tank...japan, they chose a smaller tank, also...japan is pushing cleaner air, and the TW sits on a point of clean vs advancing design. Most people that are against the tw, are the cc size and haven't tried touring on one for say a month...there is a reason you dont see a lot of them for resale...

Dude are you trolling us? The TW200 is an off-trail bike / trail bike. The road capability gets you to the trail that gets you to the real deal (the grassy environment you mentioned is an example). Sure the other bikes are great bikes... but the TW200 does more than any other of the bikes you mentioned. Yes it's the slowest on the road and trail... but once we get off the road, and to the end of the trail, as I continue off trail you'll be watching the back of my helmet from the seat of your CRF. The 250's are faster than the TW200. Some of us don't want to go faster on a trail. I'd rather go slower on my TW200. The large tires are better at riding the side of a hill than standard size 250 tires. Fort Nine said he could go places on his TW200 that his DRZ400 wouldn't take him. That's a hell of a statement. TDubs kid says he gets 70 mpg on his TW200. Short of jumping logs and boulders on my Honda Reflex, my TW200 goes more easily wherever the Reflex can go. A 250 will tear up a trail (literally) faster and be more exciting than a TW. But for me, the TW will allow me to enjoy that trail more, and I'll be more relaxed and have more energy when I get there.

The TW200 is a unique bike with true dual purpose in mind. This is the bike that can and will go anywhere. The gearing, the seat height, the TIRES. This is a bike you take camping and hit the trails with, not motocross, just good old fashioned trail riding. Farm work, this would be fantastic on a farm. Forestry, I can see a ton of uses there. Hunting too, this will get you in there. The taller, faster bikes, not something I care for, I like the lower center of gravity and compactness of the TW, it is one of those machines I am glad someone still makes.

I actually compared the TW against a lot of bikes, including the XT, WR, XR, KLX, and CRF lines of bikes and still chose the TW. Here's why: I use the bike as a tool, not a toy. out of all those bikes, which one would you want to use to carry 100 pounds of equipment up to a remote, sandy, rocky and very isolated place? I chose the TW for the task because the big tires will float in the sand. the low seat height keeps my feet well planted. The low gearing gives me the torque to tractor up and through obstacles without burning up the clutch. I'm not going fast and will be alone, so power isn't an issue.
If you're going out specifically to ride a motorcycle, yeah there are a lot of better options. But if you're going prospecting, camping, hunting, etc. and need a motorcycle to do it, the TW is hard to beat.

It has limitations, but it's worth the money if you want a bike that will go absolutely anywhere at any time.

That would put me in the experienced category? But I've decided to go to the TW200. I can hang with any of my friends with $10k KTMs and Husqvarna. I just don't ask the TW200 to go fast or jump. Owned ktm 500, Honda 450, husky 701... tw200 was the last one I bought (6yrs ago) but is hands down the best overall bike. Can go anywhere and it's size makes it perfect for hitch carriers and for keeping the bike up while riding as it's so short and fat. Gas tank is small but $150 will fix that, and it's definitely not very comfortable, but nothing is at 12,000 feet up on rocky trails. Hands down best trail bike I've ever owned or ridden. So they are for sort of different purposes. The TW is actually a GREAT second bike for that "other motorcycle" you are talking about, and is a super capable trail machine or around town motorcycle, very fun. The XT has taller suspension and more of the modern "dirt bike" feel, so if you plan to do more jumping or more offroad that requires the suspension travel it is better, but they are just so different. I actually think the TW is more fun, and it is built like a tank, but the XT is the more capable machine in true "dirt bike" scenarios.

Most beginner riders in my experience want the dual purpose bikes with better road manners and more mordern styling, where I find most people that love TW200s are actually more experienced riders that like it for the fun factor. Thanks for the input!

I've been riding for 27+ years, and have ridden/owned countless bikes..
The TW200 is the only bike that I've gotten multiples of, & for very good reasons.
The 'newest' one: a 2013 with only 47 original miles. Unreal find for sure..
    I rate em' #1 for a Coronapocalypse go-anywhere-scoot. Next to nuke-proof..

This bike is not a dual sport, off road, beach bike and definitely not designed as a beginner bike although partially fits in lots of scenarios for it's versatility! It's category is "Agricultural Machine" or simply a purpose build farm bike and it triumphs all the expectations of it's category at highest standard including the looks which is the signature of this breed + ultimate reliability for decades despite all kind of abuse, simplicity to be fixed by owner, get everywhere attitude all with cheapest budget. That's why they've been a world wide phenomena for ever. All the flaws are there because we're trying to frame it as sth that's not and manufacturer never claimed or intended it to be. It humbly carries the best farm bike ever made globally with pride.

"beginners" If we focus on that then you throw power and speed on trails out the window. So I am a little confused here? For a true beginner the Tw200 is the easiest bike to ride. Also note that I am a professional instructor. As far as value for dollar, power and speed for more experienced riders, then sure I would agree with you. The TW is slower, and it is a bit pricey. But "beginner" and "new rider" Then that is the perfect candidate for a TW200.

TW200 because of the engine and gears, suspension and frame, the oversized fat tires and they’re simplicity is built for a very specific purpose!
i’ts a motorcycle for extreme terrains and extreme tasks, mostly built for farms, mining, sandy terrains, recognition and maintenance tasks on harsh conditions

And I disagree with you on this not being a good starter bike, I think it’s a great starter bike, especially since the resale on it is awesome, you can go out via TW drive it for a year or so learn to ride figure out what you like then sell it for about what you paid for it go buy something that you know I know you want, if you buy a hard-core dirtbike with turn signals and find out you like cruising on the street more you kind of screwed, the TW is decent at cruising on the street and off-road and everything else and it’s slow and easy to learn to ride on and it’s a great starter so you can get your feet wet in everything to see what you really like and learn the basics of writing so you can make a better choice on your second bike. Personally I would probably keep the TW forever but I think it’s a great starter bike, I wish that was my starter bike instead of an XL 600, But I love the XL 600 as well so…. Lol
I get what you’re saying on the price that it’s up there with others but the reason the price is so high is because of the demand and I see people buying a 2019 or 2020 and paying more for it because they can’t get a 2022 end People are still selling these things torn up beat up and trashed from the mid to late 80s because they’re tough the last forever and people just love them, so as far as the price and it being a big investment it’s not that big of a deal. You can go buy a TW 200 and turn around and sell it in a year and it’s possible you’ll lose nothing or might even make a few bucks or even if you lose some money you’re not gonna lose much. there are a small handful of other bikes that you’re gonna be able to buy and get rid of in a year without losing money, and a TW you’re probably not gonna lose money after five years or ten years either. You pretty much have to destroy it and thrash it to lose money on it. That doesn’t make it a better bike but it takes away the argument on cost because I want anything else you’re going to buy is going to be worth a whole lot less a year later. Everybody has their own choices and they’re a ton of great bikes out there But they’re a couple of bikes that keep hanging on because customers demand them and they sell well and those are simple dual sport type bikes. Look at the XR 650 L look at the KLR 650 look at the DRZ 400 come up people are mad cause you can’t get a DR 350 anymore, People are paying top dollar for 80s Honda XL bikes, the biggest problem with the motorcycle industry has always been it was driven by racing and the other 99% of the users out there don’t care about racing and they just want some thing fun simple cheap dependable reliable, look at one of the best selling bikes in history come at the Honda CT line the CT 9110 and now the 125, they’ve sold so many of them it’s disgusting and they just keep selling them yet they put 90% of their R&D into making these race bikes. That’s very cool and it’s great technology and I love it but the market loves the TW, you can find them for sale but it’s hard to find a really good deal on them and it’s hard to find new ones at a dealer they usually only get handful and they’re usually sold pretty much before they arrive, you rarely see a Yamaha dealer with a couple of TWs sitting there ready to go. So I think it’s a contender and that’s probably why people ask. I don’t know that it would be my first pic either but I think it’s incredibly valid pic and up there near the top for me personally. What I wish is that they would put out better starter bikes and simple bikes and economy bikes. Bringing back an XL 350 that was a simple cheap old dependable technology that worked great and selling those for under three grand would be awesome and they would probably sell a ton of them but unfortunately like a lot of things the motorcycle industry is driven by racing and of course magazines and advertising so buying something like that would just be ridiculous when you can go spend 15,000 on a new KTM. But that sells those kind of bikes with huge profit I guess. Maybe I’m completely wrong but I think a lot of Bikes would be doing very well right now like the DR 350 XL 350, the XR 650 L is already out there and that’s awesome, they brought the Taylor 650 back because people just love the simple decent all around Bikes. Magazines and reviewers will complain that it’s not quite as good off Rodes the latest race bike but 99% of the people don’t care they’re not racing, yes an XL is never going to win a motocross but it’ll let somebody have a good dependable cheap bike or they can go out there and ride like that and ride to the track on it. Those are the people who love the TW, it’s low to the ground it’s not intimidating it’s got very manageable power with just enough to get you up to that 65 miles an hour if you want, It’s got the six speed so you’ve got good gear selection so it works on hills and everything else, it’s a pretty good all-around bike, it’s not going to be first at anything but it’s also not gonna be last at anything and it’s not spectacular but I think that makes it nearly a perfect starter bike unless you’re very tall. I love it as a starter bike you can be a 4 foot 10 skinny girl or a 400 pound fat dude and it’s gonna be a great bike for you and it’s low enough and simple enough and easy enough for anybody to start on but it’s still capable enough to keep it fun. You can get a little XL 100 or something like that and it would be a lot of fun but you’d outgrow that thing in a couple of months and pretty much have to replace it unless tiny little powerless bikes were just your thing but getting stuck with a TW as you outgrow things it’s not that bad, it’s still a really fun bike even after you’ve been riding for 20 years. I think that definitely puts it up there in the rank of starter bikes, I would say get a better front tire and you’re good to go, $75 Shinko 241 some hand guards and maybe a beat your skid plate and you’re good to go and you got a bike that you’re still gonna have fun on in 20 years, it won’t be the best bike and you’ll grow in like other things but if you never sell it it’s probably something you still ride and still love, a lot of other starter bikes can’t really say that.
