- 2011 SCCA Runoffs Road America - Spec Miata race. In car camera from Danny Steyn #39. Have a REALLY WILD SLIDE through the kink on lap 1 (2:52) in the slick conditions. Takes another 6 laps before I can flat foot it through the kink. After Tech and protests, I end up finishing in 5th place. Thanks to Mike Rossini at Rossini Racing Products for his wonderful spec miata engines, Traqmate for their excellent data package, and OPM Autosports for the best in trackside support.

What a save! (@ 2:52)
Lots of slides in my vid as well, but nothing as lurid as 2:52... very nice! Love it. That's a pants-ruiner, especially in the kink.
@dannysteyn Ah I see, thanks for letting me know. and thanks for the upload. I drive a 2000 1.8s in the uk, i had the alignment set today, it was miles out and feels amazing now. mind you I'll be getting it setup again in the spring when the hsd coilovers go on her.
Thanks again mate
I love the little nervous fiddle with the crash helmet every lap between turns 7 and 8 i think ? where you had your big save at 2:52. It shows how fast that part is on the track.
Great racing
Always fun to watch a spec miata race. I wantedto build one of these little cars and hopefully I'll getthe chance to in the future..
This looks like so much fun! I would have been PUCKERING up in that slide. How do the 1.6 engines hold up at the track when stock? Cooling or oiling issues?

Connor - you can get into Spec Miata with a car around $10k, plus about $1k of personal safety equipment. To be at the front of a National field you will need to spend around $20k on a car. You can rent National winning cars from several teams including OPM Autosports, and see how you stack up in terms of raw talent. Of course you still have fuel, tires, entry fees, travel costs, etc. A typical Spec Miata weekend with 4 test day sessions, 2 qualifiers and 2 races costs around $2500 all in.
Amazing save!!!
I love the guy in second throwing his hands out the window around 16:40.
People have said it before, but WOW, 2:52 is amazing.
2:53 all the money baby!!!!
I know, right???
NICE save there at 2:52 dude!! haha
@samgurl85 I was just typing the same and I thought I'd better check to see and there you were.
That was a top draw save mate. TOP DRAW. great
Nice save in the kink.
2:52 was some great recovery skills
amazing save in the kink
Great save in the kink! Was the seat wet afterwards? :-) You seemed to dive too deep on the braking in the first 2-3 laps -- it slowed down your exit. But you improved in the latter half. Same with hitting the rev limiter (you got a fast car! With mine I'd have been losing places every time I hit the limiter) - again fewer occurences towards the end. Probably too nervous at the start? :-) Nice driving!
2:52 LIKE A BOSS !!!

Pretty much all of SCCA racing is done by amateur racers - some serious about winning and some just to have fun. Spec Miata is arguably the most competitive and affordable class in SCCA, and has the largest national fields. Spec Racer Ford is a close 2nd. Almost all of us have regular day jobs that afford us the ability to race the weekends.
@JustShred015
You do that at the end of a race to let the corner workers know you appreciate what they do. I was in this race. First ever Runoffs. Finished 10th after starting in 21st. The kink was a pretty hairy ride back there. Two cars in front of me got into the wall.
Nice vid , good racing +1
@MyCosmicPath - thats the drinks tube to the helmet I am inserting in my mouth - gotta hydrate!!! Usually do it on the longest straights where hands are not needed on theh wheel or shifting - Genrally after Kink before Canada Corner
He gives the thumbs up because the cars behind him are drafting him and since they haveextra speed they are bumping him to increase his speed. Team work among competitors ;)
Niiiice Save!!!
Sparco 353 - quick release hub welded to steering column, face of wheel painted to match the car. Push to talk buttons at left thumb
brad mentioned this to me today.
If you don't mind me asking, how much are the rossini engines? Hopefully going to start racing in a spec miata series in a few years.
would love to do this someday! how much money do you have invested between the car and all the equipment??
i just turned 16 and i was thinking of buying a used miata for around 3k and getting it track ready, but i wouldn't know where to go from there. however if a Spec Miata weekend costs only around $2500 in total i think that would be the better buy.
Curious what brand of steering wheel is that and did you give it paint?
Drift at 2:52 brought to you by iRacing
34:25 The camera started giving us a tour of the car. haha
Why did #44 have hist fist out the window at 16:27?
Also, I wonder how the move by Drago (#2), being 7(!) laps down and blocking Gorriaran (#44) went unnoticed by the stewards. Oh wait, it didn't! They actually punished... Gorriaran. With a one year penalty. Ah, the sweetness of justice.
Why did you keep waving and giving a "thumbs up"?
He is communicating with the flagman and other drivers. 1. Wave up / Thumbs up for the driver behind to bump draft as a team. 2. side to side wave is NO passing on full course yellow 3. Seems standard to wave to each flag station on yellow laps to give the OK. (correct me if I am wrong)
"Hey, do you think we should dry up the kink a little bit more before the green flag?"
'Nah it's not necessary. It's only the most scary part of Road America. They'll be fine...'
dirty stuff :D
