    This movie was crazy. Psychedelics, Cloning, Crazy Sex scenes... and all it boils down to how you handle a situation when it presents itself and how you come out of it. It was a grounded approach when you have an idea of cloning. I thought they were going to go to a different direction with cloning but the execution was pretty good. Rich people as usual doing crazy stuff and pretend they are normal at the end. Mia and Alex were excellent. 7.5/10.

And if you get convicted we'll be more likely to give you a slap on the wrist like community service or probation versus actual time in prison".

    i really really wanted to love this movie but the last act just didn’t do it for me. i agreed that it relied a little hard on the trippy scenes and just the vibe in general, and yes it was incredibly tedious for me. i considered leaving a couple times just because i was bored and annoyed with it. mia goth was iconic, and i loved the look of the film, brandon’s got an interesting film language. but i couldn’t help but feel like the fact that i wasn’t overwhelmed by the shock value, especially from THE trip scene on, meant the movie just couldn’t hit for me the way it could’ve. i loved some of the concepts and the acting was great and again the cinematography and mia were spectacular, but i just kinda left this movie mad.
    also yes the theater cut did still have the nipple sausage but yeah the cumshot was much less graphic. which i appreciated, the movie felt unnecessarily gratuitous enough at times as is. it was like a 5/10 for me

    After my parents and I watched this movie, we questioned whether or not the original James was ever switched out and killed instead of the clone James during his first and second execution, thinking that it could be interpenetrated as to if the James that we see at the end is the real him or not. Also, I wonder what ever happened to the two girls that helped bring James into their house towards the end, since they were not shown to be present in the house when he woke up for real or outside when he confronted the Zombies.

    I know it's not the point of the movie, but somehow I couldn't accept the idea that cloning a human being was presented as something so trivial. And to think that this place is the only place in the world where this is doable, the possibilities that a technology like this could bring. But nope; they use it just to execute people. And it's kinda hilarious if you think about it. They could even bring back the victim but no, punishment is the only thing that matters. Also, it is supposed to be a poor country that barely stands up thanks to tourists, but I think human cloning would be a much more profitable activity. I know I'm overthinking this but the lack of context on that matter kinda put me off a little.

    It's kind of giving Crash (1996) vibes... people going through something hugely traumatic and destructive, getting WAY too into it, and continuing to pursue that high regardless of whose lives get ruined in the process

    agree, the ideas don't really come together and it's VERY on the nose at times. some ideas were just there as place holders for things to come (how did the body doubling actually impact the story? not much). but it was ok, acting was fine, not great. still cronenburgs ideas will come to into their right one of these days and then we'll have a truly great film. did like possessor better as well.

    There's a couple of things I'm still fixating on academically. For example, this idea of what is truly primitive vs. civilized, and the ritual murder by the son. There's also the knife vs gun use (meaning why are knives sometimes used, and guns used in others, and what's the significance there).

      I honestly think that's what happened with everyone in their little group. Their real selves were killed a long time ago, each time replaced with a clone. To the point where each time another clone dies, they lose more and more of their humanity. And this is where they end up. A great analogy for the loss of one's humanity each time you abandon your own morals.

    I just saw the theatrical cut of this movie (really want to see the Unrated). I loved it but there was this 80-something-year-old woman in the audience who started chirping it towards the end asking, "Is it too late to get my money back?" Ended up seeing her in the elevator and she said it was the "worst movie she'd ever seen in her life."

    My husband & I saw this last Friday, we also went in completely blind, only reading the very vague IMDB synopsis & it really was A Movie haha knowing that Cronenberg (probably spelled that wrong) is something of a nepo baby gives some interesting context to connect to James’s character. I thought it was a pretty good movie overall, not one I would probably watch again personally but definitely interesting haha Mia Goth was definitely the star of the movie, although Alexander Skarsgard did an amazing job too, she was just so wild & unhinged you couldn’t take your eyes off her lol
    Also, my immediate thought after watching the movie was “oh I bet Amanda is going to review this movie.. I can’t wait” 😂

    Yes this is about Cronbenberg's (the writer's) various insecurities and neurosises. It is interesting that Cronenberg, who is Jewish, decided to cast the strapping Aryan specimen Skarsgard. And indeed that is why the movie fails. Skarsgard is the wrong person cast. A Jesse Eisenberg or even Danielle Radlciffe would have made sense but Skarsgard in this role is pure nonsense. You simply can't figure out how a man who looks like Skarsgard could get wrapped around the finger of the sexy psycho that Goth plays. He's a 10 and she's maybe a 7 and she has a horrible personality. But those other actors I mentioned or Cronenberg himself falling under the spell of the witch makes perfect sense.
    Anyway, Skarsgard needs to make better decisions so he doesn't become the surrogate sacrifice for other screwed up writer/directors. Hmm... interesting parallel with the film there.
    Fun fact: The main character of Breakfast at Tiffany's is also a Blond one-hit-wonder author who is a kept man. A much different movie of course. Probably a coincidence or is that a trope? I just happened to watch the two in the same week. A much better movie or at least much better casting (except the extremely unfunny Mickey Rooney character..)

    • @ryotanu
      @ryotanu Рік тому +1

      I remember that cronenberg casted skarsgård specifically for this role because of his physical appearance. Deep down the guy feels inferior because he is dependent on his wife ( who definitely looks better than mia goth). Despite his look he is deeply insecure and weak and has no idea who he is.
