I organized one fika at my lab building once. Ofc there were sweets and godis, but I did some small sandwiches, very common in Brazilian birthday parties. OMG, Swedes rolled eyes to me, but all the foreign students thanked me a lot ahhaha

I really enjoyed this video, and I love that having fika is mandatory 😄 in Italy we have something similar, it is called "merenda", it is usually at 16, but at work sometimes we just eat something quickly... it's more a quick coffee break☕ while during the weekend it's an excuse to meet with some friends and have a coffee and some sweets together🍰🧁☕

We are doing most things in English (for now) because we feel there is a need for more resources for the more beginner ones.🤔
But once we produce enough material for the more basic levels we will gradually speak more and more Swedish. Just like in our live and video courses. 😁

I wish we could do this at my job! I'm a manager at a store that just opened a year ago. We bought a coffee pot and a big container of coffee and we would make a pot at the beginning of each shift. We haven't used it in over 6 months. 😢
There's SO much work to do that we have no time to spend time on making coffee. We have tasks that MUST be completed by certain times...and then once we actually open for daily business, there's NO time. 😭😭😭
We usually just bring a travel mug in with us and take sips when we have the chance. I would be so happy to just have coffee breaks. At least we can go buy coffee at the business across the street when we have our lunch break.

Thanks for the video. I was looking for a recipe and ended up in a Swedish culture channel LOL I have a question: what about people who don’t drink coffee? I imagine they could join the fika with matcha or another hot beverage, or that would be considered strange/rude?

    • @FunSwedish

You can definetly join a fika with some tea or whatever.
It is a tiny bit wierd though if you say you never drink coffee. More from a "does not compute" confused look from a Swede that cannot imagine a life without drinking coffee 😂😂

There are a lot of things you can drink at a fika, coffee is just the most common drink, but other somewhat common fika drinks are tea, hot chocolate, chocolate milk (for example Pucko), soda, juice, lemonade, or even a protein shake. I don't like coffee, so if that's the only option I'll just take some water. And if it's a workplace that you expect to work at for some time, you could always mention at the fika that you would like to see another option than coffee, and depending on how the company works they might either tell you to bring a drink yourself and they'll compensate you (since the fika is almost always paid by the company) or someone gets it for you.

If in Italy, you said "in Sweden everybody loves fika", you would receive big smiles and pats on the back. But we would have understood something slightly different. In fact, fika is pronounced exactly like an Italian word. Try to go to an online Italian-English translator , and write in the Italian part, FIKA but replacing the K with a C .🙄
