  • Morro Bay Kite Festival
    The annual Morro Bay Kite Festival is scheduled for the last weekend in April. The event is held near the Morro Rock at the end of Coleman Drive. It is free to the public and the parking is also free. The event features kite making, candy drops, free flying and demonstration kite flying. It is an excellent time to take spectacular photos. It is also an opportunity for young and old to experience the thrill of tethered aviation, something that adults may have forgotten and youth never introduced to. At the event here is a vendor's row including a kite sales tent. This is a family fun event. There is no alcohol sold.
    Some friendly advice; if you do plan to fly a kite, then fly it a week before the festival in order to get the feel of it. Kites and lines can get hopelessly tangled in wind and other kites. It pays to practice!

    Me and my kids are going to fly kites on the beach. Amen

      Bring a cloth sack you can fill with sand. Being a carabiner that you can clip to both the sand bag and the kite line. If the wind permits, your kite will fly unattended the entire day.

    Wonderfully colourful and happy video of a true family kite festival. Great to see the joy the children ( & adults) were having with their kites. Enjoyed seeing your new Rieleit ( a kite that's on my endless wish list) . Thanks Cherie for the close up filming of the new kite. Even with it's large size it appears to be another "gentle giant" to fly. Loved that shot of the Rieleit flying high above Morro Rock.

      Thanks Carl, it was a lovely time and satisfying. Cherie is a wizard with the camera. I was happily handling the kites and she was mindful of her wrist.

    Well, What an excellent video. It looked like a very colourful couple of days.
    I was pleased to see the spinsocks doing their thing in between so many superb Kites. A variety of big and small kites, Young and oldish people, What a super couple of days. Thanks to Cherie for getting some really good video. The end result was worth the effort put in by you both.

      graham vaughan The spinsocks flew the best yet. Both were arrow straight and never a hiccup in the smooth motion. They were every bit the perfect accessory for a large kite festival. I'm proud to display them. You are right about the effort. Serious kiters are no shrinking violets. We have gear, weather and crowds to be mindful of. I'm glad we could produce a video of it. Memories fade, you know.

    great advice Glenn...as I watch these wonderful videos of around the world kite... such artistry and movement in the sky, I often wonder how lines are not crossed with all that beauty in the wind.
    I guess I will just have to go to one and find out! Perhaps Niagara Falls this April~~

      +Mark Groh Mark, lines do cross. We call it "making new friends." Niagara would be great..as long as your kite doesn't get loose ha! Check the American Kiteflyers Website for a calendar of kiting events. There might be something close by.

    Hi, can you tell me exactly what camera was used to film this? Thanks-Jeff

      +1minibean Hi. I used a Sony HXR-NX70U and filmed 60fps progressive. I edit in Sony Vegas and use the highest possible quality. UA-cam re-renders everything to their specs thereafter.

      Imran, it is free for all, but in 2019, the organizers have taken it away from Kiteflyers and made it into a children's day at the beach. I am much saddened by this and hope for better times in the future.

    What a wonderful event, Glenn, with some great kites in the sky, big and small! Glad to see I was right with my original guess about your "mystery bag." I hope Premier are paying you well to advertise their products. Sorry to see you succumbed to getting the spinsock in their nasty printed fabric; very headache-inducing, that. I do like that eel, but too expensive. Lots of lovely filming touches by Cherie; she did a great job.

      Jim, thanks for the comments. Premier really did have a presence at Morro this year. I was delighted to be part of the event.

    Great video with nice kites, but I really miss seeing framed kites at festivals. It seems like the big money inflated pieces have taken over and it's kind of sad (even though I'm semi-guilty too). I really enjoy replica historic kites as well as homemade creations too. Can't forget the Battle Rokkaku either. Ya gotta luv a good kite fight! LoL

      This was a very nice event, probably a pinnacle. There has always been s healthy debate regarding show kites dominating events. There can be no doubt that people enjoy the spectacle. There is an undeniable pride in being able to say" that's my kite". On the other hand, wretched excess by having the most space hogging piece on the field is bothersome. Too, kiteflyers often get territorial to the point of defensiveness over their patch of earth. Lastly, people get put off when the owner of a big kite is lecturing others on safety hazards etc. None of this is ever likely to change. Morro happens to be a fair sized beach and people got along well...right up until the time that non Kiteflyers thought they could do a better job running things. It was the kiss of death! Regarding the sticked kites, I agree they are fun and manageable, Cody kites are a boutique kite for purists. I love mine. I do hope we all get more air time in 2021. This season was a bust!

      HI, the event was held in America at Morro Bay during the last weekend in April. Currently, all festivals have been cancelled. Look to next year for similar events.

    I am torn between kites or the tea cups. The deciding factor would be copious amounts of tea sandwiches and a reserved sign. The privileges of being a AKA member. Does that discount work in the carnival area?

    • @PanyingPilot
      @PanyingPilot  9 років тому

      That is a choice to ponder! AKA members were given deference on the field. Hot dogs were comped. You should a been there!

    Will do Glenn. I'm looking to have a large delta made with custom colors, can you hook me up with a name and number for this?

    • @PanyingPilot
      @PanyingPilot  8 років тому

      I would first look at Premier's collections, the Into The Wind's deltas. If you are really set on a chain creation, contact Graham Vaughan in England. Check out his UA-cam videos to get an idea of scale. Finally, if you want colossal Kites check out Weifang Kaixuan Kite manufacturing in China. Good luck.
