I was lucky to have met Dave Allen twice as a kid. The first time was when we sat next to each other on a plane flight and he kept me (a 6 year old) entertained making jokes over his missing half finger. The second time was a year later when we went to see his live show and he happened to remember me and we went back stage afterwards. I'll remember him as a kind and funny man taken too soon.
I was raised Roman Catholic. We loved watching Dave. Every Catholic I knew, loved Dave Allen and found him hilarious. We could all relate to his jokes. After all, Dave Allen was raised Catholic.
I remember watching Dave Allen on the TV back in the 70's. I always found him to be hilarious. My parents would always allow me to stay up a little later to watch the show with them. Good times.
Dave Allen was Irish but lived and worked mostly in the UK he broke the stupid old fashioned mould of comedy and set the stage for the new stand up comedians like Billy Connolly etc. I grew up watching his brilliant delivery calm clever and he made you think with his pauses and slow method and with just a glint in his eye and a slight subtle smile you got the hidden joke too.
This brings back some happy memories watching Dave Allen with my parents, a very funny man, and yes he did ruffle a few catholic feathers, but I think they too also loved his comedy deep down inside .
If everyone could laugh at themselves we would have a much better world. Dave saw the funny side of religion but he had huge respect for people's religious beliefs and always finished his shows with the words "May your God go with you".
My Irish Mum and Dad were living in Australia and loved Dave Allen and with my first job, I bought them tickets to see Dave Allen when he came to Canberra (Australia). They told me he was amazing!! They have since moved back to Ireland.
I’m so glad you both enjoyed Dave Allen, he was a national treasure in my household growing up in wales, me & my father would be glued to the screen howling laughing while my mother was tutting & shaking her head in the background trying not to laugh, absolute legend!
I personally am so happy to see repeats of Dave Allen, because when he was first on TV, I was laughing so HARD, I missed the next joke. Absolute GENIUS
He told the jokes, which sounded quite controversial at the time. But he was tolerant, and always said at the end of his show 'May your God go with you'. He only wanted to make people laugh.
Dave Allen was brilliant, he had a srtict religious upbringing and put it into comedy, every week during 1970s 1980s our house was filled with laughter watching him, and he is as good today as he was back then 😂😂
Dave Allen was a contraversial figure back in the day. There were frequent calls for him to be banned and tone down his act but he didn't comply. He broke down barriers at a time when North Ireland was having The Troubles. Truly a leading comedic light. He is missed, I wish I could see him commenting on the state of the world now.
A lot of the banning calls weren't even from Catholics, ie Mary Whitehouse, who set herself up as the morals upholder for the British Isles, where in fact she was just a blue rinsed old biddy, who'd forgotten what a good Rogering was like.
Dave Allen was a legend and was the forerunner of UK comedians today. As a country the majority of the UK is not religious and religious people tend to be quiet about their religion. We tend to think americans are what we call bible bashers - shouting and promoting religion
The English laughed at the time We Irish rolled on the floor and laughed our legs off. And we were SO SO PROUD OF HIM. I once saw him at a gig and thought I 'd turn inside out with the laughing. hospitalized
I agree that comedians should be able to make jokes about anything *without punching down* (because that’s just bullying). Not a stand-up, but the best humorist I know to strike that balance was Terry Pratchett. He could be incredibly scathing of systems and conventions, and was always extremely funny, but he always took people’s humanity seriously.
I adored Dave Allen, as a Catholic family, my mother used to complain he was blasphemous but still found him funny, the rest of us just thought he was magnificent. He used to end his shows with the words “ and may your God go with you” - very classy.
Back in the 1970's I was a teenager and as a family we would watch The Dave Allen Show - it was primetime Saturday evening on BBC and I think at one point he 'defected' to ITV. Happy memories of laughing at his wonderful comedy with my late Mum and Dad and my sister. He was a comedy legend and genius. It's so sad her went before his time. RIP Dave.
His Tv career took off out in Australia in the early `60`s I believe. He returned to the U.K. & in the late `60`s, had the first of his own Tv show`s here. I started watching him with my family at the end of the `60`s & the `70`s onwards. In this new decade his program was called (Dave Allen At Large) & I believe, any clips like this are from then. When he is going grey are the later `80`s era & the Airplanes one you mentioned was from his `90`s one-man shows.
He was so radical and controversial in his day .. but his credibility and brain won over the masses. Speaking of mass, I was shocked to learn that my Catholic friends found him even funnier than I did.
Irish Catholics are easily ble to have the mickey taken out of us. We simply just don't take offence, and we laugh at ourselves and all of the silly observations of our guilt-ridden upbringing. Like Jewish people, Polish people and many more: because, really, who cares? Mock me if you wish, but we mde the jokes first 🤭
Dave was very much his own style of comedian. His stand up was done sitting down and his style is of a natural storyteller, relaxed with a drink in his hand entertaining his friends. He started in the 1960s and ended in the 1990s, but his heyday was the 70s and 80s where he was very popular on British TV. He wasn't a family comedian on Saturday evening, he didn't host game shows or chat shows. He had his own shows, an later when the kids are in bed, consisting of his storytelling, broken up by his usually dialogue free sketches. That is the odd thing he did all that talking but then treated the inserts as bits of silent comedy. The main controversy he had was being I think the first to use the F word on TV in the UK. He was a great entertainer and I think his material has not dated all that much, given most of those pieces are 40 or 50 years old. I don't think you got the Gideon reference. The Gideon Society used to put bibles into hotel rooms.
This was the 70s and 80s . I looked forward every week to the Dave Allen show, one of the best satirical comedians ever, he overshadowed everyone else in Britain, Dave R.I.P, much love and respect to a true legend, thank god l.o.l , snippets of your shows can still be seen on UA-cam 😂😂
Brings back happy memories of sharing these moments with my long gone parents in the 1970's. It's great to see how timeless his humour is - and that it is being enjoyed by a new generation. RIP Dave Allen (which side of the wall are you on).
Ahh, Dave Allen, superb tale teller with a fantastic, laid back style, brilliat at cutting the pompous down to size. His skits are some of th best you will ever see, well worth reacting to more of them Joel. On a side note, the car in the funeral chase, the Citroen 2CV, I used to own one, one of the strangest cars you coulr ever drive, drove like the illegitimate child of a space hopper and an old bedstead. Lots of fun though. Great choice for a post Joel, More please!! 👍👍
"You wake to the clock, you go to work to the clock, you clock-in to the clock, you clock out to the clock, you come home to the clock, you eat to the clock, you drink to the clock, you go to bed to the clock, you get up to the clock, you go back to work to the clock... You do that for forty years of your life and you retire - what do they fucking give you? A clock!"
Joel, I really love your work. You find so much interesting material for your reactions. English comedy has always been very good. They can be very suggestive without being vulgar. Dave Allen seemed to do a fair bit of "religious" material.
loved watching you and your mates reactions to, who I think was the best comedian ever. You need to show your mate, the one, where he is teaching a kid about time, and the one where he starts school.
Hi Joel. Thank you for another video from JPS. It was -4 here in Glasgow last night and don't think it's to get above 3 today. So going to be a cold one. Letting you know my parcel to you has arrived in your PO Box. Can't wait to see your face lol 🤣 Take care. Fiona M, Scotland.
he had his own show in the early 70s and into the 80s... you could get away with a lot more back then...there were a few British tv comedy shows back then in the 60s 70s that didn't make it into the USA till a few years later...
Back then there was much less political correctness in the UK, a lot of our sit coms and comedians would not be aired today. Dave Allen was a gem and vety much loved.

5:30 you guys missed the joke, the Gideon Society leaves copies of the bible in hotel rooms. Next time you stay in one, check the drawers. You’ll almost certainly find one.
The UK is majority atheist. Dave Allen used to live near Henley on Thames and drink (infrequently) in a pub I occasionally visited. His 'whiskey' on stage was actually ginger ale (non-alcoholic). He died in 2005 with his last BBC show in 1990. He had a second home in London where he died.
1970s.... Saturday night after "match of the day" with lights turned off and the couch pulled out right in front of the TV with my dad and brother watching "Dave Allen", great childhood memory. I'm certain MANY people of a certain age in the UK have similar memories. Dave Allen was a great but humble man. sorely missed.
He was my favourite comedian. He is still popular. All these comedians are mainly still around. Dave Allen live was the first date I went on with my future husband in New Zealand in 1987.
Thank you thank you from a little old lady who loved Dave Allen and never thought I could watch him again. One of my favourite jokes was the wall in heaven.
The book he's referring to, that is...''left by a fella called Gideon''...in every hotel room he's ever stayed in, is the bible. The Gideon associstion print and distribute to hotels, as a way of spreading Gods word. We'd also be given one in school...i had one in the late 70s, early 80s....but i dont think they do it anymore. I havent seen one in a hotel in decades either.....which is a shame imo

The Gideon's are/were a christian movement who used to leave bibles in hotel rooms all around the world, it was a very common occurence to find a Gideon bible in hotel rooms back in the day(I can recall finding at least a couple of them myself back in the 1980s/90s) but I don't think they're anywhere near as common as they used to be these days, i'm not even sure if it's still a thing anymore.
I am not sure about not taking stuff too seriously. The subversive nature of Dave Allen's comedy contributed, as all good comedy should, to helping people free up their thinking so that they became more willing to interact with non-traditional views. George Carlin was a leading exponent of this humour in your own country and of course there have been many since. Of course it helps if, both of these, you are also bloody funny. Laughing at something slightly taboo is a transgressive act so one immediately becomes complicit to some degree. Clever, huh?
I grew up in a irish Catholic background. Remember watching Dave Allen as a teenager so funny. But if Father O'Riley came to visit. My mam ud switch the tv off and throw table coth over it
He is hilarious, you need to also check out Morley and Wise. Comedy duo that last from 1941 to 1984. Very very dry sense of humour which I only truly got when I became an adult. 😂
Joel is turning into a distractingly handsome guy. That tank top is giving me life! My boyfriend better start wearing one! I don't care that it's not very 🌈
One thing I love about Dave Allen is the fact that at the end of his show he always says "May your god go with you" showing his respect for all peoples beliefs
I had the good fortune to bump into Dave Allen twice as an old age pensioner. I was the old age pensioner, I mean, not Mr Allen. Anyway, we were sitting next to each other at a bus stop in Scunthorpe and he kept me (an 84- a year old) entertained making jokes about my glass eye and hip replacement. The second time was a year later when I went to see his live show and he didn’t remember me. Still, I’ll remember him as a soulful and gentle human being taken too soon.

Lived in Australia as well
lets not forget Stanley Baxter and Dick Emery both like Dave Allen where a head of there time and the humer still stands good today

I personally am so happy to see repeats of Dave Allen, because when he was first on TV, I was laughing so HARD, I missed the next joke. Absolute GENIUS
People are calling him British, but he was from the Republic of Ireland. He was such a brilliant comedian, and sorely missed.
Love Dave Allen….brilliant comedy
I had forgotten just how hilarious and clever Dave Allen was. Loved watching his comedy shows. Thanks for posting.
I saw Dave Allen live in Glasgow over 40 years ago while I was at Uni. He was hilarious from start to finish.
i saw all the shows when iy was first shown on BBC here in the UK in 1971... briliant comedian
He told the jokes, which sounded quite controversial at the time. But he was tolerant, and always said at the end of his show 'May your God go with you'. He only wanted to make people laugh.
I love the way brits could laugh at themselves...Dave Allen was the best. Wish he was still with us.
I agree,but he wasn't from Britain or the U.K.He was Irish.🏴

He was hilarious. Everybody loved him. It was on from 1971 - 79 😂😂😂🥰🇬🇧💃
there is a religious society that leaves and edited version of the bible in hotel rooms "The Gideon Bible"
In the UK, according to the 2021 census, less than half of the population recorded themselves as Christian. The Church of England is currently haemorrhaging adherents at an exponential rate with average weekly attendance at services around or less than 1% of the population, accompanied by a high rate of church closures.
Yes same in Australia- about 43%
Same in New Zealand and Scandinavia
5:30 you guys missed the joke, the Gideon Society leaves copies of the bible in hotel rooms. Next time you stay in one, check the drawers. You’ll almost certainly find one.

I think they are non practising Christian we certainly not bible bathers
No, I am going by the 2021 census. It would have happened in 2011 but there was a trend to put 'Jedi' as the religion.
Now that you've introduced Arturo to the best in British comedy, is he ready for the Two Ronnies, four candles?

Thanks for the remiinder of the genius of Dave Allen. Funniest Man.

The Gideon associstion print and distribute to hotels, as a way of spreading Gods word. We'd also be given one in school...i had one in the late 70s, early 80s....but i dont think they do it anymore. I havent seen one in a hotel in decades either.....which is a shame imo
I love your new friends they had certainly added a bonus
Hoping they will join you if you travel to the UK next time
That was one of his best, Joel. Brilliantly funny. Have a great weekend!! John in Canada
He died. Hilarious well-liked tv comedian.
He changed his last name to Allen when he moved to England so that he would be at the top of the Yellow Pages for to get work. True.
I usually can't stand "react" videos because the reactions are soo fake but your ones are GREAT!
I can tell it's really genuine and it's FANTASTIC that some young people like yourselves want to check out legends like Dave Allen and find them funny.
All the best from the UK mate!
the gideon bible was in every hotel room until mid-90's in UK lol
You need to remember that Ireland was a very strict Catholic country until fairly recently.
Satirical understanding, is a beautiful thing 😄👍
I really enjoy your video Joel can we have more videos with your friends please
Love watching your stuff . Lol love from Scotland 🏴
Love the vids bro, shocked you ain’t reacted to DAVE yet.
He’s a musician, arguably the best lyricist living right now.
If you do check him out (Ez Views) id suggest you listen to the Physcodrama album and Game Over.
Gideon publishes Bibles and leave them in Hotel Rooms all over the World.
Your reactions are " classic", as we say in Australia, means really great. Grew up watching Dave Allen with dad, he too was classic! ☮️

I just looked it up, the Gideon's are still on the go, only they've now rebranded themselves as "GOOD NEWS for everyone"(sic).
I remember watching these sketches in the 60's and 70's , they were very controvercial , but we loved them , so funny .

Comedians do a better job of pointing out the total bullshit of religion than a thousand UA-cam atheists can manage 😂😂😂
In 1978 I used to watch Dave at my friend's house with his mom and sister.
