It really shows when someone likes his job and have fun doing it. Congrats Sorin!
Most of us "ME" would have no idea where to start. I Love Dodgy. Great Channel
I like watching this gentleman work. He fixes computers like i fix my pickup. Lol. Anyone can throw parts at something until it works but you can see this gentleman understands the complete system and fixes it. Im very impressed! Thanks for posting on the channel.
Hello Mr. Soren, I am one of your followers for maybe a few years and I watch everything you do and I want to tell you that I am maybe your age and I see that you are one of the very smart engineers and the way you examine and find solutions to the most difficult problems you face with several devices you are considered to me a treasure of knowledge. Thank you very much for what you provide to us and we are proud of you for your professionalism, ethics and broad-mindedness.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
verry nice sollution. Did this once with a all in one sound system. There it was 12 V. I stole it from somewhere else. Still working after couple of years :)
As a software developer I know the situation when something works after some troubleshooting, that's just a wonderful feeling! Congratulations! It's a pleasure to watch and celebrate with you :)
11:56 Sorin i will call you Dodgy no matter how better than factory you do, Dodgy is the reason i am here lol, keep up the great videos ♥
Way better then telling the customer it can't be fixed. It will probably work that way for years. Great video.
29:08 - Female voice saying "If you want me to stay quiet" only if robot says it...
😂😂😂
watch for retaliation! According to some veteran studies, the amount of SoD may increase by 23%
Proper professional and calibrated wire with funny laughts. Not dodgy at all. Nice pizza also today😜😜
Very interesting and impressive repair! Definitely worth at least two pizzas! 🍕 🍕
I personally would have replaced the chip. I understand tight deadlines and he needed it back the next day - and he would have, without sound (just as he brought it to you). I'd have then said once the part arrives, bring it back for a proper repair. However - I was impressed by your repair! No need to mess the customer about any further and the results are the same! One working computer! Pure genius!
What is "proper"? It works fine this way. So, it is not "proper" until there is what "god" put there?
Agree with everything you said!
@@milsiart4976Proper might not be the right term and is very relative..Fixed As Designed is what OP was suggesting and may be a more appropriate way of putting it
..
That's fine ONLY if you can even get the chip.
@@milsiart4976well I think, proper is when the repair follow the original schematic of the board
He wanted an expedited repair and he got it. If he can find the burnt IC, he can have you replace it later.
It's a voltage divider, if R1 is bigger then R2 is also bigger.
yes the resistors were in series
What do you mean by "R2 is also bigger"? The measured resistance of R2 is 9.1 kOhm, which matches the recommended value given in the datasheet. It is a voltage divider and the ratio R1/R2 determines the output voltage of this power supply via FB (feedback) pin. Given that R2 is fixed (9.1K), the bigger the R1 the bigger the output voltage.
@@Armagedon698 He means that in voltage divider, ratio is important, and he is saying that Sorin is supposed to remove both resistors from circuit and measure them, Sorin was confused after measuring only first one out of circuit.
What is confusing Sorin here, is that he forgot that he has one probe on ground, and he is not measuring resistance of that resistor only, he is measuring resistance of that resistor plus whole laptop in parallel to that resistor.
At 18:25 you can see that he measures something at 5.6K Ohms, we dont know what is real R2 value since its never measured out of circuit.
Sometimes Sorin is so dodgy or lazy it backfires on him, but its his way of fixing stuff. Desoldering both resistors and measuring out of circuit would give him proper ratio in 2 minutes.
I'd replace with other duck 🦆.
@@Armagedon698 there was a cap charging, not reliable.
The pin 5 (FB) of power PWM chip APW7301 perhaps should have 1.25V to stop generate pulses. A quick look in the datasheet should confirm what voltage assigned to the pin. Then provide a voltage 5V on output of the coil and check what voltage will be on pin 5. Now you have sufficient information to calculate what supposedly should be the output voltage to supply to audio amplifier.
5V taken from other chip might be insufficient to provide enouth power to amplifier and perhaps strains other power supply chip.
But as a quick fix it is a reasonable solution.
I would use a buck converter (connect to 19v rail) to provide power to the chip. They cost a few euro on ebay.
Yes! Even anything you got like 7805 a117 anything but to take from the audio ic power supply... The above does work OK up to the point you will put up too much volume and the amplifier will draw in amps not miliamps and will drop the voltage on the audio ic enough to crash it and disappear from the system until next reboot 😅
The problem with buck converters is that they take space and it's difficult to fit them inside a compact device such as this one.
space, the final frontier! :D
@@miftosaurus 🤣
I would have done the same repair, little expense, maximum result!
The old days we used to "have picture". Now "we have sound"!
Another great, very interesting, helpful and educational video! Thank you!
Sorin, I love your videos and your sense of humor ! ❤❤
This is the best way of fixing this kinda of job
I would have installed a small buck converter (LM 2596) to the main power rail, adjusted its output and then connected it to the audio circuit. I think your method would overload the other circuit that you tapped into causing premature failure of that circuit. Captain dodgy strikes again 🙂
It is a "monster" for such solution, there is a cheaper and smaller solution which available in plentiful.
Lm2596 is an overkill here, I would rather use mp2307 or some sort of thing. It has higher switching frequency and smaller size
I tought the same when I watch the video first time. Then I checked again how much current the chip absord when Sorin use the bench supply ... it was only 20-30 mA,
29:39 I would do what you did before, putting a brand new Buck converter maybe converting power line to 5v and good to go, it can produce power enough for anything
There is a voltage divider formula in data sheet, after knowing the voltage you can replace with any other Buck converter laying around in spare boards or even premade 3£ converters from the Chinese, it's less dodgier, lol
I had done like this. 👍
thats one of the best repairs i have seen.
this time "We have Sound!" nice work my friend!!
No this is a pure professional a skilled person can do this kind of jobs really it's a good👍
это великолепно.Вы мастер своего дела.Удачи вам
Captain dodgy to the rescue lol
Inteligență și creativitate! Acesta este Sorin!🏆
Another proper calibrated video 👍
Hi sorin the fb pin has a defined voltage if that voltage gets to the feedback pin the buck supply switches off pwm generally feedback pin has voltage of 0.9 to 1.6 v that means if output is 5v the feedback pin should have the voltage defined for it after the resistor divider network doesnt matter what resistor are being used in it untill its in range of 100kilo ohms.
I would replace the chip. There is a possibility that the 5V rail will get overloaded and burn in the future. How many watts do these speakers have? 2-5? If they are 5W, the required current is about 1.25A RMS on 4ohm speakers. I am expecting a return.
This is probably power of amlplifire, after repair test speaker using bass music on full volume.
Speaker is powered directly to Chip, he checked it. There is no amplifier.
That's the real deal, master at work
probably we need to check the audio ic input voltage specs in the datasheet and then supply voltage from somewhere else I think if that makes sense !
Yeah We have sound Yesss. Thank You My Lecturer
Hello Soren and channel. To fully evaluate this fault, the altered power input, it is very helpful to simply set about designing a board region.
Several very robust programs support the activity as board component within design layout, the activity to design and fixture chips, capacitors, resistors, mosfet, diodes, ect. Within the program, effortless placement is moved, altered, as to achieve a nice package with the normal end goal set as sales. My task was to effect a car windshield with dim out to the dreadful blue -white halogen intensity as blinding as hours of operator darkness.
The understanding 1st gen trial, leads to 2nd gen, 3rd gen. Directly relates to various print reads to the modern , mother board complexity. Some models, such as several dell monitor, suffered a central power solder fracture after months of end use.
Re solder, repaired the fault for a refreshed service time. And I think the interested channel will at once, think of other examples. A common fault to model. Fundamentally, the customer to repair wants a rugged, long service to needed device. And advances a device to request for repair. How the electrons flow is not of interest or comprehend.
Enter practical, restored to working. Sound is on. Everything works.
Low cost, expected robust operation for a long life.
Next example? The modern car parked outside, with a list of electronic modules doomed to fail. Water, vibration, hot cold cycle?
Get ready to pay for expert service. Will you truly care about 11 volt to 14 volt duty? Drive on. Calibrate wire. Everything is fine because "we have picture". M.
I think that when the resistor is bad, it increases its resistance, probably that's why you found that resistance, there is a voltage divider if any of the resistors are changed the output voltage is different, remove the resistors from the board and measure and calculate using the formula: VOUT= VIN(R2/(R1 + R2)
Hi Sorin, good job and not dodgy , obviusly better replaing the IC, but sometime we must adapt to the situation, bye Francesco timpano from Florence Italy
good job
I have a similar case but no short ,the sound work from time to time by itself,
i did removed the motherboard and applied heat on the realtek chip and the 2 amplifier it worked but after some days it appeared again i think the chips needs reballing
it's asus zephyrus s gx531gs
Where would Sorin be without his calibrated wire ?
If i was doing the repair i would have been honest with the customer and told him that
for now it is working, but it requires a new I/C to return it to factory spec.
If he continues to use it with the temporary repair it is at his own risk.
You are the master Sorin
Nice one, but for me i will use an "external USB sound card dongle "to convert the sound.
But your approach was a great one. Thanks for sharing
I will do exactly what you did!
27:23 That cracked me up. 🤣😂
..i dont want to know 😂
Sorin dodgy? no way never ❌🙅♂
That ic takes 12v and i would add step down buck regulator and convert 19v to 5v or boost regulator from 5v to 12v incase power supply is not always on when you plugged in adapter. Thats how you can proper job incase you dont have in stock but being a technician i always keep srep down and step up regulator with variable outputs on me for these kind of jobs.
I would take the power from the charging port, but with a few diodes in series to get about 12 volts.
Lol after we have picture now we say " we have sound " can't believe 😂
Sorins magical touch
I will take 5v from the HD drive .. but i'm worried about this voltage... the burned power supply can power also the 2.5 HD... this machine has an M2 for windows ( i don't think it's an optane hybrid array ) .. if i'm right the 2.5 disk is also not working.
Hello. I have small generic switching power supplys with diferent sizes and adjust the voltage. I reapair some Epson proyectors using thats. Put the power supply inside a heat shrinkable.
Realtek manufactures both lan and audio controllers. you might have tested the lan one first time around.
would try to get the right part but you fixed it good job so that what you have to do he needs it back asp
can it burn the 5V power supply ?
For me, I will add some external board PSU with 5-9V and supply it from the main 12V
He's a wizard, an absolute wizard.
If i where you i will check that chip input then i will use step up power supply or a booster and try the right volt. Then it will be safe if he used his speaker on max.
No doubt that your repair is quick and smart and cost no other part.
Exelent Job!!!! Regards for argentina.
On my motherboard, the sound is also broken and can't find the chip anywhere, so I connected an external DAC and the sound is better than the original. I did remove the chip in case it can also be short-circuited.
Perfect job👌👌👌
Salutare, eu cumpărăm o placa de sunet externa tip stick și gata .
I would replace the chip. You are now supplying voltage to both chips using the same power supply, which might not handle that kind of power. Remember that the audio IC must use much less power than the audio amplifier, so most likely the audio IC 5V supply is going to be mad hot while in operation and may die sooner than expected.
Most power supply chips are way overpowered for this kind of application. Can't even buy the shitty chips anymore. Economy of scale. Also the power supply will provide until it burns. Thick board, lots of solder. No problem.
I would too, but the guy said that he needs this device to be repaired asap, so there should be no complaints 😅
That’s the only way
Very good way to ez fix.👍
It is a good way like u did but for to go like more professional I will check more to be sure about the voltage an put a buck converter to get the same value from the speakers.
I always looking ur videos, I love how u do fix the problems in a easy way and saving time. I learned a lot from u either. Keep doing what u do and don't mind about dogshit comments for those who don't know in electronics
NICE VIDEO.. NICE REPAIR
Proper calibrated wire always win✌️
Good job mate 👏
perfect tactik
i saw that (apw) buck converter in (video door phone) and if the frequency and package of a replacment switching ic is the same... so you can use it instead....good luck
I came to embrace the dodgy repairs, so long as there's no side effects.
The machine was fixed, and Sorin should have said that the sound quality would be shit.
And if client wants better quality, he should suggests a USB sound card (or better yet, BT speakers). Or client could call "in a week" and find out if the part has arrived.
Remember, the "bottom line" depends on many situations, and here the critical parameter was: have a computer tomorrow, and only then an additional one: have sound would be nice.
The client received: a diagnosis and a temporary solution.
This is awesome stuff. My only concern is,whether it will put more load on the 5v buck converter IC? When you increase the volume also it will push more current through the IC
Better to get that 5v from the usb connector. It is more adaptive.
I would have probably installed off-the-shelf DC-DC module from aliexpress. Or waited for the IC lol.
Thanks sorin
Sorin, my first aproach would be to see what chip îs sound ic and what îs audio amplifier
There are small PS modules, configurable to variable output.
Some device will only work with a bypass so great job
I will read the voltage feedback of power supply and find the proper voltage value and after that I will try to find the same ic , if not possible to find ic then I will fit a small size buck converter but with enough power , power will be given from Input power of ic and Enable pin also connect.
But I don't have time ,like I have to give it in 1 hour then I will also do the same.
In market there are little little very small buck converter or circuits that converts 19v to desire voltage that would be perfect 😎
Nothing very wrong in the repair you did but the only issue could be, the speakers are too demanding and the amplifier draws a lot of current, you may also burn the supplly from where you have sourced the 5v.
Better to replace the chip on long run as soon as possible it’s available.
this design is actually clever id say a good propper design someone think aye we just slap an isolated soundbar module in this thing tied to main rail then step down the voltage and we done simple efficient if it get rekt it doesnt take the other component or chips inside
amazing Zorin
Good find Sorin, maybe it was volume
anyways id just use a direct conversion from the main rail and tune it down to 10v using inductors and variable resistor and a 30v100uf buckconvert
No datasheet but there is another way.... I checked some HP AIO schematics.... the ALC chip runs on 5V
in 25:33 what did you do ? did you injected a 1 volt at low current ?
IF... you are sure the 5V you are stealing it from is not a "balanced" circuit that drawing from it could crash that and can of worms..., then maybe a little voltage reg tapped from 19V would be the safest and it can safely draw what ever the volume is. I have tons of 5,9 ect v regs for this purpose, not just laptops. So useful when you want to get power to something controlled but NOT sure if the tap is safe to do so. Sorin is VERY experienced and wouldnt do this or show you unless it was safe. The guy knows his stuff when other shops are clueless. He makes stuff work!!!
Given the time constraints, this is the only possible solution. The thing is whether such solution is viable as a long term fix? Cannot it just ruin the other healthy part the PC? That is probably the question Mr. Soren needs to confirm to his viewers.
Mini pcb psu -and looking on discord for info ABOUT board-u recomended NONSTOP THIS
I would send to Sorin to fix it
Hi sorin could you touch on input and output voltages signal voltages and what is voltage good reading like how many volts is that what is important for us to know thank you
You can buy that chip ACL1301 easily.
What about the burned chip, cant be replaced from a doner board?
You Pick The Albert Einstein Style this time.. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Smart Choice Sir Sorin 😆😆😂
Very good, i wouldnt have got that done for next day, lol, Would have had to order the i.c., well spotted!
i love this repair xD
A separate power supply was made for a reason. Will this power supply be more loaded?
Sorin to the rescue, yes he wants his Pizza.
Servus ! Eu i-aș fi recomandat, pentru rapiditate maximă, o placă de sunet USB și boxe externe.
