- Holy cow, 6 years ago to the DAY I uploaded my first ever review of Powerpuff Girls 2016 and after all this time, we're back again. Crazy to think that it's been one year since my final video ever on the series haha... that is, until today of course.
I've been in the mood to make some ranking videos again so I figured, hey why not, let's rank the first season of PPG 2016 from worst to best. A lot of those season 1 videos are outdated by my standards of today so this was the perfect opportunity to try out something new (well, I made 2 rankings back in 2019 but it's been 2.5 years since then so I wouldn't blame people for forgetting).

I like that you still call the princess "Blue Balls". That is commitment.
I think a year long break from this series is what you needed. I'd definitely get sick of this show if I had to review every season of it.
Every season every episode as well as other related media such as comics and games.
Yeah it's very exhausting. I'm surprised Shadow was able to maintain his sanity.
Feel like bubbles should have been an artist instead of a computer programmer. And probably would have made sense since the original had shown she loves to draw and color with crayons. Kinda would have made an episode where she puts her art on Instagram and she get bummed out that she doesn’t have likes. Would have made a lesson that art in media has issues but not to feel bad, cause it’s that fact that art would make someone happy, even if it’s just one person or family that likes their art.
They did make her an artist in the reboot. One example of this is road tripping. In the original, she liked to color sometimes. In the reboot, they Flanderized her into being interested in modern art. Also, there are many different types of intelligence. The issue with the computer programmer trait is it's not funny. In a comedy show, you should write characters with schtick in mind. You can use Bubbles being a scaredy-cat to tell a joke. It's harder to use being a computer programmer to tell a joke.

I feel if Silico's backstory was retconned to being Bliss who messed with Silico's situation (and Silico was set up to be a 20-something), then their final appearances would be more worth it.

It’s a shame that this will be the last time Tom Kane portrays the professor considering he was forced to retire due to a stroke. The reboot completely ruined his character and we will never hear him reprise his role in a way that redeems him. Speaking of Him, I suppose it’s a blessing in disguise that they used Him so sparingly since he portrayed both of them.
Oh, yeah, it is, fuck.

He did a good job in this reboot...even if the show was terrible.
But unlike the Prof, one of the few things that this reboot did well was HIM was still legitimately evil and competent, especially in Electric Buttercup and Power of 4.
Even in his final appearance in our brand is chaos, he isn’t reduced to a goofy villain searching for a key to the world like in the series finale of the original.
Although I like the Powerpuff Girls Rule, I never got why HIM needed the key to the world. He’s the devil and should not need that. Also since he can fly and teleport, He should have gotten the key.

The writing would be WAY more respectful to the OG.
Frenimey would be awesome if they turned the tables on Jemica and mind controlled her. They put the necklace on her when she falls asleep. They use the mind control to make her return everything she stole and turn herself into the cops. Then throw in physical gags for revenge.
It really does speak to the quality of the 2016 reboot when over 80% of just S1's list of episodes was a mix of awful to just boring with only the final 10 being decent or just okay.

@@ShadowStreak but of course, you've had an amazing growth over the years since I first watched you back in 2016 and seeing you go back and give a sort of re-review of the episodes was a treat because as you said, you've grown and matured so much with how your review that you were able to spot which episodes needed to be either knocked down more or maybe propped up just a little.
I was happy to hear you talk about one of the episode and realizing that it deserved more criticism and that you initially were nice to it to be considerate of others, even if they may have just been assholes who were trying to manipulate your viewpoint.
THAT is a sign of growth and you have every right to feel proud
But Season 2 and especially season 3 had a lot more good episodes. So it’s not like the series remained bad throughout its run.
@@Esgles It kinda did tho. Those episodes were hardly any better. Hardly enough to change how bad this show was. Those seasons still had a lot of consistency errors and terrible writing just like the first season. In fact hardly anything was fixed.
A shadow Streak video is a great thing to have while recovering from nasal surgery.

And Harvey(HIM’s little boy alas) does return in Imagine That. So HIM uses his Harvey alas to spy on the girls at school
I guess it’s fitting to look back on this reboot one last time before the eventual CW reboot drops. If it’s as bad as the leaked script, then PPG 2016 may as well be the calm before the storm
I think the CW show is quietly being swept under the rug.
This is one thing I dislike about the reboot. In some of these episodes the villains don't have a motive. Nobody is evil for evil sake they need to get something in return for being evil. The biggest example of this from the reboot I can think of is Quarantine. How does Mojo stealing that chemical help in his conquest of Townsville?
Exactly. This show falls apart when it comes to execution. Some of the original PPG episodes had this problem too, but the reboot worsens it.
@@AJPierson The original never had this problem from what I remember. I watch it pretty often. The monsters even had a reason for attacking Townsville. If you fight the PPG it means you are tough and the other monsters think they are cool.

Happy 6th Anniversary, Shadow Streak! It's pretty cool to know how some of your opinions on episodes have (or haven't) changed. And these Season 1 reviews are certainly a great improvement! But I was surprised to know you disliked roughly 65% of the season. (You don't have to do the math.)
We should have a montage of Shadow Streak saying “Next we get a montage”.

I'm going to resent this reboot solely because Tom Kane's last role that we know of - was this bastardised Professor and the fact that it completely shatters the delicate floating timeline and worldbuilding the original set up to unbelievable levels.
Also, I have to reiterate that this reboot falls under Fairly Odder philosophy: if you ain't aiming for preschool level writing, there's this weird smudge where everyone else/tweens and teens used to be replacing periphery demographics which I call the "Pop Culture Hole."
It's why it's hard to market animation as "adult animation." unless it has gore or swearing or something in it, and even then it can easily be sucked into the hole by one South Park reference too many.
Tom Kane has some more recent credits than this.

Adult Animations Don't Need To Have Gore And Swearing. Adult Animations Explores Symbolism And Life Lessons (Sometimes Darker), The Big Example Is #PerfectBlue Even I Didn't Watched, But I Know It Have Gore And Other Heavy Tropes, But It Represents The Dark Reality of A Japanese Idol.

The reason I feel Mulan is my favourite piece of feminist media is that it doesn't portray men as morons to make women look good, it portrays both men and women as strong

I remember I didn’t subscribe for a while because I would be super embarrassed if someone saw One of your videos in my recommendations and then after two months of watching your channel I said “fuck it” and I subscribe and here we are. Honestly I feel genuinely feel bad for the animators/voice actors who've had to work on this show like you cannot pay me to rap out a cringy song and the animators who worked so hard on these episodes I'm really sorry for them all, they can much much better

Seriously what happened with Jennifer Hale and this reboot? They brought her back to voice Ms Keane whose role dimished greatly in the reboot, but not to voice Princess Morebucks whose given twice the amount of screentime as the original.
I didn’t even realize until this video that literally all of the women were recast but not the men. That’s fucking embarrassing
Haley Mancini wanted to take the role for herself and shoved Jennifer to the side.

Yay! I missed your PPG 2016 videos. You should consider reviewing the toys that came out. I’m a rare one that likes this reboot and I got to say my favourite from season one is Tiara Trouble because HIM as usual is just content with how much chaos he causes at the Beauty Pageant.
Kinda hate the fact that I was way too lenient when I watched the reboot in its early days as Season 1 of this series genuinely one of the worst seasons of any animated show I've seen. Yeah there might be some passable or even decent episodes, but the amount of pure garbage here is astonishing and almost all of the eps feel like first drafts.
Though I will say. Still love Bubbles expression at 42:01. Low-key iconic.

Thank you for really reminding of all the things I was not fond of with this reboot, you summed it up splendidly in your 1# pick. I could forgive so much if it was still them being Super Heroes and beating up bad guys and such, but so much of this show is just a bunch of down to earth stuff or surreal things that makes their powers worthless that didn't need them to be Super Heroes to do, it made me wonder what the point of it was here. Hard to feel like I missed much when I decided to just stop halfway during Season 1.

I remember moving to boomerang and realize there was a old version of PPG (boomerang also shows old shows) the 1st ep i watch from the old was like the collector then steals them to be on his collection and after that i become more into the old version than the new its just more cool

Powerpuff Girls 2016 was an unwatchable torture fest from beginning to end. It's a spit in the face of the original.

I just got the strange urge to rewrite frenemy so I did:
So the episode starts on job day (I don’t know the proper term), it starts with the professor’s turn who is has a base for a potion and let’s kids choose what goes into it, they choose glue and ice cubes, professor then mixes it, it isn’t tested because doing that in the classroom would be irresponsible, then Jemica comes in and shows everyone the many adventures she will go on, this intrigues the girls. After all the adults go back home and school is about to end Blossom, Bubbles, and the green one zoom to Jemmica and ask her to take them on an adventure, she says yes, right after school, but no adults allowed. Blossom is pretty suspicious about this, but Bubbles gives her the benefit of the doubt and says she doesn’t want any adults to ruin the fun, which buttercup agrees with. The girls go home and ask the professor if they can have a play date at jemmicas house, Jemmica, pretending to be her mother says yes and gives them the address to her house. A little later they drove up and soon the professor leaves. Jemmica grabs a book from the shelf and shows where she plans to go tonight, an ancient temple. The girls are excited until they fly there with Jemmica and it says “No Trespassers” Jemmica hastily covers this up by saying she bought tickets, the girls all go along with it, although a blossom has a bad gut feeling, they pass many traps, the girls destroying all of them, Buttercup holds the crushing spiky wall up with one hand, blossom freezes the fire they had to walk over. Bubbles calls animals to crush the scorpion pit (all the animals survive somehow) Jemmica realizes how helpful those powers would be for adventures, so right before Jemmica grabs the artifact and leaves she asks the girls for a sleepover, they refuse because it’s a school day. That makes Jemmica mad and that’s when she breaks out the mind control necklaces and puts them on the girls

I still really love your old season 1 reviews, and well, all of your PPG videos in general, and rewatch them every now and then because of how good they are. As for this video, it's another great one, though I have a few disagreements.
I still really like Poorbucks and think it's the best ep of the season, but you made good points about it.
I don't think Presidental Punchout was all that bad. Maybe because i'm just a sucker for eps that involve an election but I thought some of the jokes were pretty funny.
I REALLY don't like The Sleepover. It's just so boring to me, there wasn't a joke I remember laughing at. It's just so forgettable.
While I don't dislike Power-up Puff, I do think that The Big Sleep, Viral Spiral and Fashion Forward were much better than it, but your reasons are understandable.

Yeah lol, I've wanted to watch it at some point because I never got into it as a kid, I just don't have the time currently to get invested in long-running series.
Easy fix for Sapna spoiling the TV special: Have her say something to the effect of "It already aired a while ago in (insert other country here). Sorry, I thought everyone knew."
This is something that happens a lot; I used to watch SpongeBob episodes through YTV rips, because some episodes aired in Canada first.
How sad is it that the 2016's version of an alternate universe is one where the Professor is actually a caring dad? Also, the comic "Deja Vu" did this concept much better.

If they made a new season, I would like to see a faction made up entirely of PowerPuff's, like maybe these Puffs are they bootleg Puffs from the original series epsidoe Knock It Off. Like maybe the chemical fire mutated them and stabilized thier Chemical X, and after the fire clears they wake up with new forms. They're motivation would be that they believe that the girls have fallen from grace and no longer deserve the titles of heros. They'd start out seemingly as villains until they save someone from another villain. Its just a dumb idea butbI thought it was cool.

I shouldn’t have to say this but here it goes: children shows covering transgender people is heavily important because some children will relate to that AND other children will learn the terminology. Like how I learnt from Steven universe the term ‘non-binary’ (and yeah I’m not a child but I’m grateful for the show for teaching me that cuz school never did 😅) and what the 2016 reboot did has massive horrifying implications even though we know it was never intended as a allegory to being trans but just the fact that CN tried to advertise it as such is so horrible

Personally, I feel Man-up is a good companion piece to Makes Zen to Me. Also, I find it notable that the villain was named Man-Boy considering there was an episode of Johnny Bravo with a one-off villain of the same name but had a completely different appearance and gimmick. If it was supposed to be a reference, it failed because of how little resemblance the two Man-Boys bear to each other. If it wasn't a reference, the staff show their ignorance of their classic series by unknowingly reusing a villain name.
Once again you should review the GBA game “PowerPuff Girls HIM and Seek”.
Your pick for worst bothered me as well but for a completely different reason. The whole thing with Bluebell trying to yeet herself was a try-too-hard joke at showing just how far she would go to trigger some sort of reaction from the Princes since in her head, he would only show up whenever she was in grave danger so to her the bigger danger she was in, the more likely the Prince would show up but we later know why this wasn't the case, that being they decided to portray the Prince as a 'stupid gamer guy'. It was bad because the people who made this show would not waste a moment on trying to remind the viewers how much they think male characters suck as we have seen with that they did with character like the Prof and Mojo.
No, my beef with this episode comes from how two-faced the message is about how to be a 'strong girl' and it comes off as saying that femininity and strength can not coexist. Bluebell was only 'strong' when she got needlessly angry, tore off her skirt, and if anything just became irritable and aggressive but at least she wasn't 'weak and girly', amirite? This was something that the original show never tried to force which is why we had THREE HEROES who showed off three different personalities and how they could be heroes in their own right. The reboot didn't hide that it favored the more BOYISH Buttercup who was reckless, aggressive and patronizingly smug but she was still better than the responsible Blossom who was often depicted as a hot mess and Bubbles who was vain BECAUSE she was the most girly.
How the absolute fuck did they think shit like this would be empowering to girls when they're telling them there is only one track of being strong and that's to be like Buttercup who they turned into an absolute asshole. Oh wait, I know. It's because most of the crew already fuckin' act like Buttercup so what they're doing is throwing their biases right at the viewer and telling them how they should behave because they think they're an idol to look up to.
