There's a New Villain in Town || The Fog (PPG 2016 Review)

  • Hey guys! Today's episode, The Fog, brings us a new villain in Townsville that has recruited several antagonists in the area to team up and work together to bring down the Powerpuff Girls. This may sound like the potential for a Meet the Beat-Alls sequel, but please do not get your hopes up because this episode is nowhere near as well thought out and planned the way that one was.
I'm currently doing my best to get farther ahead on reboot episode reviews right now. I've already finished up another one for next Friday and am about halfway done with the video after that. Ideally I'd like to get like 5 weeks ahead on reboot reviews during the month of October, so I'm definitely going to be setting aside a lot of my free time to jump ahead on these videos as much as possible. Stay tuned for a community post or announcement video regarding the bonus content people would like me to cover before wrapping up PPG 2016 for good; I'm going to be taking suggestions for various topics that people would want me to talk about so be on the lookout for that.

Haha, it's almost like the reboot's version of the original's "Moral Decay" where Buttercup wanted to have money from the tooth fairy so she started to punch every villain's teeth out. But there, she actually got what she deserved at the end. :)

If this was the first time in the reboot, then it wouldn’t nearly been as repetitive and unsatisfactory. The reboot version is at least way more funny.

@@seenl6eight258 It’s not so much the fact that Buttercup got punished for her crimes painfully and violently by getting her teeth knocked out by every villain she knocked the teeth from out of for selfish profit as comeuppance in “Moral Decay” in and of itself on violent kids cartoon, but the fact that they made her sisters come across as very needlessly and uncharacteristically cruel by deviously setting her up in a trap for Mojo and every other villain to knock out her teeth for comeuppance, then had them get away with it, and made it seem like her dad hardly cared that one of his daughters had gotten seriously hurt as comeuppance for her crimes at the end.
It was aggravating that Buttercup was suddenly derailed into a greedy and sadistic little sociopath, but her punishments for her crimes at the end would have probably been forgivable to most fans, if the writers hadn’t had Blossom and Bubbles gleefully and sadistically sell her out to get her teeth knocked as comeuppance, and hadn’t made it feel like her sisters and dad didn’t care much about the fact that she had gotten hurt at the end. I get being disappointed in Buttercup in “Moral Decay,” and I get punishing her However, it was needlessly cruel and wildly ooc for Blossom and Bubbles to team up with Mojo to gleefully sell her out, to take pleasure in her suffering, and to make it seem like Professor Utonium bafflingly didn’t seem to care that one of his daughters got seriously hurt all that much. You could assume at best that he was never told by Blossom and Bubbles that they were involved in setting Buttercup up in the trap to get beat up before it happened when they told her where her stash was, but, at worst, we could assume he was in on it, and let them do it. Either way, his seeming lack of concern for Buttercup at the end implies that he is okay with one of his kids having been beat up because she was a greedy little monster, which is ENTIRELY OOC for the Professor Utonium from the classic cartoon, who was often portrayed as being so worried about his super-powered children getting hurt by villains that he built a giant robot for the girls to fight crime in, then forced them to use by threatening to ground them if they didn’t, and even in the previous episode before “Moral Decay” of “PowerProf,” was so worried about his kids getting hurt when he was fighting crime with the three of them that he forced them all to wear helmets, elbow-pads, and knee-pads to go battle against Mojo Jojo.
Not to mention the fact that it was also entirely out of character for Professor Utonium to not express even *partial guilt* for failing to notice and put a stop to Buttercup’s greed before she met her ultimate downfall in a timeline of what’s implied to be at least a week. He may not have been aware of what Buttercup was doing or actively encouraged her to commit crimes, but the fact that Buttercup’s shadiness in the narrative of “Moral Decay” was implied to have been going on for at least a week, suggests some neglect of her on his part.
If they had done the same ending in “Moral Decay” with Buttercup getting her comeuppance from the villains she knocked the teeth out of for profit without Blossom and Bubbles intervention, or even if they had had Blossom and Bubbles *reluctantly being forced* to beat up Buttercup as comeuppance after getting a call from the Mayor about him needing them to stop their sister from actively committing crimes of knocking out the teeth of innocents for profit, then it would have been a forgivably bad episode. If Professor Utonium was portrayed as still being understandably disappointed in Buttercup and punished her by making her pay her dental bills with her stash he found as punishment, but also expressed some concern for her well-being and felt sorry for what happened to her, especially since he failed to notice what she was up to sooner and put a stop to it by talking her out of it before it was too late and she got hurt, then it would have been a forgivably bad episode for most of us.
Instead, the writers of “Moral Decay” met Buttercup’s unnecessary cruelty in the episode with more unnecessary cruelty and/or a lack of sympathy for her suffering from her very own family, who normally loved her and cared about her otherwise. The girls even felt bad when they went too far by nearly beating up *Mojo Jojo* to death for stealing their candy to be a petty asshole by pissing them off through stealing what they loved just because in “Candy Is Dandy,” but Buttercup suddenly deliberately harms Bubbles and takes delight in it doing it out of nowhere for her own personal gain, and Blossom and Bubbles aren’t going to express any sympathy for their own sister being hurt and sadistically delight in her suffering?
*That’s* what really pissed most fans off about the episode. The sheer amount of wildly ooc dysfunction, hatred, and indifference between Buttercup and her whole family because, even if there had been low-key implications that Buttercup was the “black sheep” of the family on the show before, it had NEVER felt like her sisters hated her and delighted in her suffering, and it had NEVER before or after felt like the Professor hated her and didn’t care about her safety and well-being.
That being said, while I DESPISE “Moral Decay” because of the inexcusably atrocious moral decay of Buttercup and her entire family in that segment for shock value and forcing across a moral that greed is bad, which they had already done BETTER previously in the same season in “Candy is Dandy,” anyway, and tend to pretend it NEVER happened, much like the show pretty much did too, AT THE VERY LEAST, Buttercup DID get stopped and punished for being a greedy and sadistic little criminal in “Moral Decay” in a way that she couldn’t just worm her way out of.

Remember original PPG episode "Moral Decay" that Mojo Jojo discovers Buttercup collecting their teeth after the "fight". He and another villains plans their revenge. Buttercup didnt get help from Blossom and Bubbles because Buttercup need learn the lesson
"Eye for an eye" "Tooth for a Tooth"
and all the money Buttercup recollected was spend on dental bills.
Yeah "The Fog" worst PPG reboot ever and reboot Buttercup worst powerpuff ever

That thing about the family being poor...
I’m pretty sure the Professor WAS making money in the original series. It probably wasn’t established anywhere in the original series because it wasn’t important to any of the stories. I mean, he HAD to have been making money there and in the reboot considering all the fancy stuff he and the girls have.

I could see the Professor previously having a very high paying engineering job, good enough to fund his personal projects in his basement, have a few inventions on the market he was making decent money off of...but then enough suits from collateral damage his daughters cause (sometimes unnecessarily) or economic hard times (like that big 2008 recession) could mean big layoffs all around, and given his general competence decay it might be harder and harder for him to both get and keep a stable job.
Still, there's no way a single father with a spacious suburban house, a laboratory in the basement, raising three daughters on a single income in a first world country could be described as "poor" or "impoverished" unless he had _serious_ debt problems.

    "Inexplicable bias towards Buttercup"
I don't think it's all that inexplicable tbh. For all of PPG 2016's talk of "girl power", it doesn't depict femininity as anything more than a hindrance or villainous (fashionistas). Those episodes where the girls needed to be saved by every male character got flak for obvious and warranted reasons, so instead of fixing the problem, they simply made the "hero" the most masculine reoccurring girl, which is buttercup.
And that really is the long and short of it: Buttercup is the most like a boy, she's the "tough" one, so when one of the girls has to save the day, it's more often than not her.

    • @isaacvazquez627

it's quite ironic; the writers in their attempt not to use male characters end up making the more tomboyish and less feminine character in the center of attention and prominence.

I feel like the ending is the way it is because the writers got themselves stuck. They wanted Buttercup to learn this lesson, but they can't just leave the villains out there causing mayhem. A bit of a disconnect between the lesson they were going for, and what makes practical sense given the situation. Thing is, I think it's a pretty easy fix. Have the Professor say something like, "Well, girls, better take care of them. Except for you, Buttercup, you're grounded!" And we end on Buttercup annoyed in her room as the other two have fun fighting. It could also make for a pretty funny moment to end the episode on, as well

Man I gotta say this reboot does a really good job at making Buttercup one of the most un-likable and annoying character in the show considering how much the writer's love to have her win at the end of each of her own episodes. Every time the girls are in trouble someone randomly shows up to help them and if it that isn't the case it's more than likely that Buttercup will save them and this wouldn't be all that bad if it wasn't obvious that the writer's had an obvious favoritism towards her compared to the other sisters. I bring this up because very early on when they first advertised this reboot there was this huge "girl power" message that they kept trying to shoehorn in , but completely failed at because they got rid of one of the most important female leads of the show ( Mrs. Bellum ) , and by having the most tom-boyish and abrasive girl alway's being the one who get's the save the day in the end as oppossed to Blossom and Buttercup who's chances of sucess is far less likely. The only other two characters I can think of that could probably be considered worse than Buttercup is the Proffesor ( who already has his own numerous amount of problems ) and Jared Shapiro ( who barely has any traces of personality to begin with ).

Having a sinister fog for a villain could've worked, like maybe if it were a monstrous force of nature that would cloud Townsville for whatever reason, or a collaborative scheme made by Mojo and some of the other villains. At least then it would create an ominous threat.

Buttercup was my favorite character in the original, and I gotta say I hate seeing them keep getting her character wrong every time. She’s supposed to be irresponsible, not straight up malicious. And that’s perfectly normal for most kids. Even then she ends up actually learning something most of the time, even if the “punishment” is unfair. Meanwhile here literally nothing happens to change her, not even emotionally. Also she sounds like a wanna be edgelord than actually being witty, which is the worst part.

I feel a comparison should've been made between this and a better episode from the original show, 'Moral Decay'. Where Buttercup learned about the Tooth Fairy and how she brings you money when you leave a tooth under your pillow, then she goes around Townsville, knocking bad guys teeth out and gains money by using their teeth. At the end, the villains (with help from Blossom and Bubbles too) gang up on Buttercup, knocking her teeth out. Also, the Professor uses the money Buttercup gained to pay off her dental work.
'Moral Decay' does a better job at teaching Buttercup a harsh lesson and have consequences to her actions than 'The Fog'. Another good episode from the original show that has consequences to a character's actions is 'A Very Special Blossom'.
I know I'm not the only one that feels this way, but the original show is far better. I would recommend to anyone to just ignore the reboot and go watch the original Powerpuff. The original show has more character development, consistencies, good story telling, moral lessons, etc.

I do like the idea of ALL the villains teaming up to launch one big attack on the town or the whole world. It could put the girls’ strengths to the test and maybe force them to split up and fight solo. That’s a GREAT idea and wish it was used more. Also dang this reboot sucks at writing villains. Although I would like to see the Gnat kick the girls to the next galaxy 🤣. As for Bubbles being offended by the fur coats I would say it’s not a problem because fur naturally grows too long just like hair and needs to be cut off eventually but conditions in the shops are probably not the best. Oh this is the episode I think it is and Buttercup did be inpatient with the lack of action in Aspirations from the original but she didn’t go this far as putting the town in danger because she does care about them. At least the original version 😑 this ending kinda reminds me of Moral Decay’s ending and it’s done kinda better. I don’t really have a problem with the girls being defeated so Buttercup saving the day because they did something new with it. But anyway stay safe out there everyone and onto the next week!! 💙💖

10:34 Depict the Powerpuff Girls as poor? WHY? What's the point in the original they seemed to be middle class. This is Powerpuff Girls, not Bob's Burgers. It doesn't add anything and only limits the plots. In something like Bob's Burgers, it makes sense. It creates conflict because they own a restaurant. Characters being poor can only be relevant if you play it up for gags like they do on the Simpsons. For example, this is one of my favorite jokes in the show. Homer and Marge talking in bed. *Homer:* What you can hear us *Lisa:* We can hear everything the walls a thin. Bart: We live in a crap shack *Homer:* Why you little. *Homer bursts a hole in the wall and strangles Bart.* In this show you can't go that far with the poor jokes because it would be jaring because the PPG were never poor. If you want poor characters make a new cartoon instead of arbitrarily changing an old one.

There was this episode called Moral Decay (which is pretty much what this episode is ripping off of), where Buttercup basically beats up villains for her selfish desires of earning lots of money. The villains didn't even do anything to warrant this and pretty much get tormented for no reason. Blossom, Bubbles and the Professor didn't know what she was doing, so she could've easily gotten away with it. But at the end, she suffers consequences when the villains beat the crap out of her and all of her money getting used to fix her teeth.
Yeah, I don't really like this episode much, but it's miles better than this waste of an episode.

It’s not so much the fact that Buttercup got punished for her crimes painfully and violently by getting her teeth knocked out by every villain she knocked the teeth from out of for selfish profit as comeuppance in “Moral Decay.” It was aggravating that Buttercup was suddenly derailed into a greedy and sadistic little sociopath, but her punishments for her crimes at the end would have probably been forgivable to most fans, if the writers hadn’t had Blossom and Bubbles gleefully and sadistically sell her out to get her teeth knocked as comeuppance, and hadn’t made it feel like her sisters and dad hated her/didn’t care about her at the end.
I get being disappointed in her, and punishing her, but it was unnecessary and wildly ooc for Blossom and Bubbles to team up with Mojo to gleefully sell her out, to take pleasure in her suffering, and to make it seem like Professor Utonium bafflingly didn’t seem to care that much about the fact that of his daughters got seriously hurt, which is just the complete opposite of who is character was in the classic cartoon. You could assume at best that he was never told by Blossom and Bubbles that they were involved in setting Buttercup up in the trap to get beat up before it happened when they told her where her stash was. At worst, we could assume he was in on it, and let them do it. Either way, his seeming lack of concern for Buttercup at the end implies that he is okay with one of his kids having been beat up because she was a greedy little monster, which is ENTIRELY OOC for the Professor Utonium from the classic cartoon, who was often portrayed as being so worried about his super-powered children getting hurt by villains that he built a giant robot for the girls to fight crime in, then forced them to use by threatening to ground them if they didn’t, and even in the previous episode before “Moral Decay” of “PowerProf.” was so worried about his kids getting hurt when he was fighting crime with the three of them that he forced them all to wear helmets, elbow-pads, and knee-pads to go battle against Mojo Jojo.
Not to mention the fact that it was also entirely out of character for him to not express even partial guilt for failing to notice and put a stop to Buttercup’s greed before she met her ultimate downfall in a timeline of what’s implied to be at least a week. He may not have been aware of what Buttercup was doing or actively encouraged her to commit crimes, but the fact that Buttercup’s shadiness in the narrative of “Moral Decay” was implied to have been going on for at least a week, implies some neglect.
If they had done the same ending in “Moral Decay” with Buttercup getting her comeuppance from the villains she knocked the teeth out of for profit without Blossom and Bubbles intervention, or even if they had had Blossom and Bubbles reluctantly beating up Buttercup as comeuppance after getting a call from the Mayor about him needing them to stop their sister from actively committing crimes of knocking out the teeth of innocents for profit, then it would have been a forgivably bad episode. If Professor was portrayed as still being understandably disappointed in Buttercup and punished her by making her pay her dental bills with her stash he found as punishment, but also expressed some concern for her well-being and felt sorry for what happened to her, especially since he failed to notice what she was up to sooner and put a stop to it by talking her out of it before it was too late and she got hurt, then it would have been a forgivably bad episode for most of us.
It’s the fact that the writers of “Moral Decay” met Buttercup’s unnecessary cruelty and unsympathetic characterization throughout the episode with more unnecessary cruelty and/or a lack of sympathy for her suffering from her very own family, who normally loved her and cared about her otherwise. The girls even felt bad when they went too far by nearly beating up Mojo Jojo to death for stealing their candy to be a petty asshole by pissing them off through stealing what they loved just because in “Candy Is Dandy,” but Buttercup suddenly deliberately harms Bubbles and takes delight in it doing it out of nowhere for her own personal gain, and Blossom and Bubbles aren’t going to express any sympathy for their own sister being hurt and sadistically delight in her suffering?
*That’s* what really pissed most fans off about the episode. The sheer amount of wildly ooc dysfunction, hatred, and indifference between Buttercup and her whole family because, even if there had been low-key implications that Buttercup was the “black sheep” of the family on the show before, it had NEVER before or afterwards felt like she didn’t care about her sisters and delighted in attempting to seriously injure them for selfish gain, felt like her sisters hated her and delighted in her suffering, or felt like the Professor didn’t care about her.
At the very least, Buttercup DOES get genuinely punished and stopped in “Moral Decay.” Even though that’s one of my most despised episodes from the classic cartoon that I pretend never happened, which is thankfully what the series pretty much did too, at the very least, Buttercup didn’t get to get away with being an asshole in that episode.

You know, I actually like the design of the Captian Quilt. It's pretty cute. However, the fact that he's a ball of yarn is stupid, not only does it not make any sense with his name since he's' not a quilt, but it's just a dumb idea in general. How I would fix him would first give him a better name, secondly make him an octopus since it fit with his wiggly arms aesthetic and would be less stupid than actual yarn, and lastly, have him be a silent villain. It would be unique to the reboot, I wouldn't want to ruin his design with a mouth, and it would be one less character who be yapping it up in the episode. I would have him use sign langue or writing to convey his evil plans.

I would like to think 'Marsha' is 'Him' delightfully playing along with 'Bubbles' plot and intentionally pulling the strings of operation. Indirectly calling bubbles out on their plan just to sit back and enjoy the clash later.
Though that would be level of writing that I am not sure reboot would actually thought of for this gag. It just feels like 'him' move and perhaps could even lean into how bubbles afforded this, him had lowered price so humorously low to play to bubbles ego.
This headcanon just lends to 'Him' trying influence Bubbles into being more 'bad' with subtle skill and that sound far better than the episode.

You know Shadow, the more I see stuff of the reboot the more I think back to how the original series kind of predicted this in that one episode that featured knock off Powerpuff Girls made by the Professor's old co-worker.
and like those knock offs, this series had 90% of the chemical X taken out of it leaving nothing behind by a shell that barely resembles the originals and I hate that this happened because it didn't, the reboot didn't have to be this watered down

Whats with all the mlp similarities this season? This was a plotline in the final season. An ally disguised themselves as a powerful villain to provoke other villains fight the main characters. There's probably no way that it was on purpose but its a weird coincidence

7:22 Am I the only one who found this scene funny? They just stand there and do nothing while Bubbles about to send them miles away and cause explosion which probably should kill them. I know reboot do that a lot. But it's still funny. Maybe it's because how they stand. The pose they stand.

Villain team up episodes are a lot of fun when they happen naturally. From the beginning I'm reminded a lot of Small World. Like ugh we've just had Mojo team up with someone who's meant to be far more dangerous than anyone the PPGs have faced before. Are we really doing this again? I'm midway through the review and it doesn't seem like it's going in that direction but you can't tell me you didn't think the story was going to take that direction again and just had Buttercup's VA play the fog thinking nobody would notice.
