Me Creaming the PSone Version of Thunder Force V 5 on Hard Mode (Turned out to be a speed run)
I have been playing the series since I was a kid. What caught my attention to the series was the weapon system that Thunder Force always had in each game that allows it's players to quickly change through the inventory once obtained. A system that was not seen in any shooter in 1988(89) When I first got to see Thunder Force II on the Genesis. This game (meaning PSX version of it) in particular is my least liked out of the series although I played it the most maybe because the Saturn version (IMO) is so much better and a little harder. My favorite being Thunder Force IV on the Genny.

I never understood the significance of Rynex coming to fight you in mission 5 until I read the lore and played Thunder Force 4. Then it hit me and I realized the genius behind that boss fight.
Thanks for the heads up, your comment actually got me to read the lore, and holy shit was I missing some huge bits of information from 4, 5, and 6 that I never knew about.
@@acid360delta7 for real, Thunder Force has a better and deeper lore and story than most freaking RPGs can manage.
@@FFXI_Addict Well, considering 6 is only in Japanese, most of that lore has a language barrier around it. Hell, without a timeline, I had no idea what the hell was going on for half the series.
Better still, it has more consistency than most other shoot 'em up series. Thunder Force never rebooted its storyline, which started from the first entry on Japanese microcomputers

This series NEEDS to come to modern consoles or PC stuff like Steam ESPECIALLY TF5 & 6! I suck at shmups / STGs but I love things about them that MAKES me want to purchase them! PLEASE some publisher make these come to modern generations! I WANT to purchase them!

Despite going by Rynex on youtube, Vambrace is my favorite ship in the series, and possibly my favorite fictional vehicle period. Love the effect when using the over-weapon.
I did like that over weapon feature and yes Vambrace is a great ship. I wish I knew about the models when they came out.
I just watched this entire thing from beginning to end with my headphones on. That was like watching an epic movie. The music, the scenes and the masterful playing on your end.

Something was lost in the transition to polygon-based graphics. Thunder Force IV looked incredible.

Admitedly when it came to side scrolling shoot-em ups polygon based transitions werent amazing unless you were to look at R-TYPE DELTA. that looked amazing but you could tell it still werent there yet.
Even though this video is around a decade old, the Hunter is still my favorite weapon all-time

Basically on stage 5, you automatically change your ship from RVR-01 Gauntlet into RVR-02 Vambrace that equipped with the new weapons.
If you play time attack mode using RVR-02 Vambrace, It's the default weapon.

Using the super weapon/while at close range makes them go down even faster.
Certain weapons allow you to kill enemies faster closer you are to them especially free range.

i'm starting to think that thunderforce V is a piece of cake to beat with no death if the player memorized every spot in the game XD
since you've made this video then i think that i have to do the usual hard ways to make at least something new as i usually try to do with the games that i've put a good practice on it ^_^
I wish Tecnosoft had put more effort into upgrading the PS version graphically a bit.
The new CGI videos are really great, but e.g. level 3 looks a lot better on Saturn.
Saturn was pretty bad with polygons so they could have made some improvements for PS, but ok.
Anyhow, great game, and I can play it in HD which is worth a lot.

Hold down the button this will lock free range in position it will not fire unless you are holding it in position with the fire button. It will automatically fire when enemies are in range as long as you are holding down the fire button.
I hope one day we get a Thunder Force 7. Even though its chances are looking VERY grim :(

coffeeblak86 2D games always looked better on Saturn, 3D games looked better on PS1. PS1 version of this had more content and less slowdown so the PS1 version wins since content and performance is more important plus, they both look dated now anyway.
My high score in this episode : about 700 000 000 points in hard mode.

Like better looking level 3 on Saturn, but transparencies on PS version where ugly mashes were used on Saturn.

Thunder Force 5, this game is great and not so great at the same time. :)
It's a lot shorter then IV, has less cool & interactive levels but is still a VERY good TF.
And the music is fantastic.
But graphics aged more rapidly then for TF 3 & 4 due to using polygons.
They just don't look very good anymore.
I played this a lot on my Saturn, but now I prefer the PS1 version on my PS3 in HD. Looks SO much brighter and cleaner.
One of the most difficult shooter game i've played! I've just not understood the wave shoot in the game, it is so weak!
The wave shot has its uses in the stages but not against bosses.
The Saturn version has better visuals than the PS1 version. Though the framerate is worse however...
For free range, do you have to hold down the button and it will automatically shoot, or do you have to keep pressing the button?
10 years late, but I'll answer it:
when you don't hold the attack button, the free range visor will rotate 180 degrees oposite of where you're going, ex: going top right will point the free range to bottom right.
when you hold the attack button, the free range will stay and fixed it's orientation to the last direction before you hold it and will attack anything that comes to it's range.

I'm not sure if you can... Not until you lose that ship it will release the RVR then all of your weapons will be able to be used...
Iron maiden is definitely easy if you have powered all of your arsenal especially getting range

yeah, the saturn version has significantly better visuals but struggles somewhat in the framerate department.

For whatever reason IMO it is harder. The in game graphics do look better. But there are no cut scenes and the game overall has less content than the Playstation version. If the game had the Saturn's in game graphics with the playstation modes and content + video scenes that would be great but for whatever reason the PSX version is not as good as far as the in game experience.

Oh god I tried master difficulty and damn was it hard. The second to last boss in master mode is easily the hardest boss in the game IMO.
