who would have thought a few years ago that i would be sitting here watching a dude work on a loft in his garage for entertainment. these have become some of my favorite videos.
We watch because we wish we could do what they're doing. Taylor is especially fun because he does it right. We 'sorta' live our lives vicariously through guys who do what we wish we could have but life got in the way, low pay, too many kids, etc., etc. Yes unless we so old (me) we don't have the energy AND we know our life is so totally uninteresting we'd never get off the ground with our own channel. Anyway, this full width loft once shelved up will give Taylor all the space he'll need.
That was fun, as an electrician I was cringing, but the comment section is already full. Thanks for the entertainment, the loft is coming together. Hell of a shop.
When I saw all the racking shelves at the start of the video, I thought thank goodness he put an extra layer of plywood! Imagine those unsupported cuts between bracing with a shelf foot on them! Obviously T Ray thought the same thing and added that plywood.
Not black though! Black sucks the light out of a room fast. I painted my garage ceiling black to look more sleek, and now I have to triple up on lights to overcome it.
Leave it to a car guy to wire his shop in DC car color codes instead of residential house wiring colors. Black for hot, white for neural and green for ground. Not red hot, black ground and white neutral. Red is for the 2nd leg of a 220v circuit.
that and i would think it would be a good idea to use romex as thats designed for ac. the wires he used are likely rated for dc. at the very least, im surprised he didn't (or appears that way) use any kind of sheathing to protect the wires, or for wire management that is. If it was just networking cables, then there is no building code or anything like that for that matter as they don't get hot, that and amps/volts are so low that they don't pose any danger. that is as far as im aware of.
@@jd_railfansolid core is residential, stranded is for automotive so he did right there. As for extra sheathing on the wires inside the conduit, it’s not required by code and would be more of a hassle than it’s worth. Sheathing is only to help with abrasion or vibration and a shop has none of that.
I agree. Three poles, three chains. Right most pole is fixed, and the other two fit into a piece of pipe welded to the front of the platform. Just lift them out and hang them off to the side when you need access.
I'd def. paint the underside wood in the lofts light gray or white to help give it a more finished look... And those brown chairs look totally outta place should have went gray or black... But the shop in all is looking killer... It kinda sucks cause there isnt gonna be much more that you will need to do to the shop and i really like the shop build stuff as much as the car stuff... lol Keep up the cool content...
On minute 22:39 I saw you connecting a green wire to a black wire, being an electrician that’s something that I would never do, in 12v black is negative but in 120v ac black is load it’s like 120v positive and green I earth as negative and white is neutral
Your shop is filling up quite organized. Your little rest area is smart and would be even better as a Pod scene. Keep your videos coming, they are great!
Love the content, glad to see the shop really coming together.... now all you need is a Neon light that says Jibber Jabber Lounge for the hang out area.
Flip the shoplights over your lofts so they point at the ceiling, it will diffuse the light across the ceiling and give you really pleasant light on the lofts--especially the hang out side
If you ever decide to run more conduit a torpedo level with strong magnets is your best friend and bend your offsets in the air, with the handle of the bender sitting on the floor that way you can shoot down the conduit to keep bends parallel while your making the bend.
It's amazing that more homes don't burn down, being the way we wire homes. I've more/less have written off wire nuts in place of Wago's from here on out!
I love it. Glad to see you pick up all this room, hang out area, more storage, sorting it all out. I've been doing some organnization in my own garge as well. Feels great.
Time for a fridge/mini fridge up there, and couch/futon for when you just need to crash/have a buddy/buddies helping out to have a spot to crash. Love it!
You should look up the elevator grind hard plumbing co mad e for their loft!!! Would come in super hand for just going up and down, also could store up and out of the way. So you wouldn't lose any floor space!!
Put a switch on the light above the hang out lift itself as you may want to put a lamp or other lighting in that area. Gonna need a vent fan in that loft as well to expel …
If those tight 90s ever give you any trouble, my method is to use a shop vac to suck a string through the conduit and pull the wire through with the string. You can suck a light string easily enough or put a wad of paper towel on the end of a heavier string. The paper wad shoots through faster.
i've done some super high end under stacker LED in the past, it's not hard, and can be done without any modification to the lift. we did 24v 5600k spotless tape in track with a centeral control box with a smart controller per lift so they could be remote controlled
I am such a sucker for garage improvements. I just remodeled my garage but now I"m going to move to another State and have a shop built in the next year.
For lights in your lift: Check out how Matt Farah runs power in his car storage lifts. He's got power cord reels run from the floor or ceiling to his stackers running power for trickle chargers. They're kept at constant tension and work with the stackers going up/down.
Here’s an idea maybe put those lights switches on a motion switch so when you walk in there they turn on and when you leave, they turn off or have a motion switch with the switch
Hey Maybe you could do like a dark ish wall for background with maybe some old school neon or underglow/street glow (if your thing) and maybe some initial d stuff for drift homage but man all these upgrades are awesome ! Makes me want to build my backyard shop so much faster !
This has been my favourite product outside of the cars. The loft and lift como is so cool. Maybe one day. I remember back in the day of the struggle with the Mx5 and Corvette out the little garage. This was only a dream back then for you. And that fact you have managed to pull that off by simply never giving up. Really hope the newer subs go back to your older video. That's also amazing content aswell. Love you and your content buddy. Hopefully we get to cross paths one day. Would love to shave your hand. Genuinely proud of you. And if you made it this far try looking into wago connectee to replace the wire nuts
Im a long time viewer but as a commercial electrician… this hurt to watch. Anyone and everyone please don’t take any of his advice here. This would fail any inspection. While I understand it’s his shop, it’ll be caught during inspection when/if he sells the house and someone’s gonna have to have it addressed. Conduit is not strapped within 3ft of it entering/exiting boxes and not using the proper color wire. Code states that White/Gray must be neutral and the ground must be either green, green w/ yellow stripe, or bare copper. Your “hot” wire can be any color in the rainbow other than the ones previously listed. This is considered an illegal installation in my professional opinion. This is why we go to school for this stuff. We have an entire semester dedicated to the purpose grounding and that green wire. Which you not using one, puts anyone who comes to work on that system, in risk of being electrocuted.
is it also dangerous and/or illegal if he is not using the proper wire thickness (gauge) as well? i was surprised that he isn't even using romex (or related) ac electrical wiring
@@jd_railfanI am impressed that he did use 12ga , but his lighting seems to be on the same circuit as his outlets which is a fail. I am more worried about him using wego connectors and not wire nuts, and also gawd forbid someone who knows proper electrical comes in to work on this and they could be seriously hurt. I can’t tell you how many of those Chinese outlets/switches I have had fail in the last 20 years and the odds are pretty good that he will experience the same.
@@jd_railfanyes. Code is considered the *minimum* safety standard. You can go above and beyond. For the most part, you can over-size your wire all day long. (Sometimes we have to). But 12 gauge is the most common size you’ll see which is permitted for up to 20 amps. (Yes, I know the 90° column says otherwise but 90° connections don’t exist in regular off the shelf equipment) I didn’t catch exactly what kind of wire he’s using but it looked properly rated for the application. I personally would’ve gone stranded so it’s easier to pull.
As a union electrician I was puking watching this install. This is a case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should." This wouldn't pass any code inspection
You beat me to it 😂. I've worked with enough electrians both union and nonunion. That was big time fail. That over stuffed box of junctions needs a complete bomb job.
Hey Taylor, truck them wire nuts off and get a box of Wago connectors. they are lever action locks in a 2, 3, or 5 port configuration & 2 common gauge sizes. no more twisting wires together. can cable tie multiple wagos together for really neat finish. cheers from Aus'.
Black, white, green for universal hot neutral ground wires. Stranded wire is so much easier to work with than solid. Not a bad idea to tape around your outlets so if you ever pull them apart live you don't arc them into the box. Couple of tips from an electrician. Nice job.
Speaking of efficency, Maybe you could make a gate on each side of the lift so you don't have to duck under the bars all the time. Just a random thought ha ha. Love your video's man, cheers.

You should cut up a carpet tile and put it on top of the container table. I will keep things from sliding and take the tinny sound out when you put stuff on it.
I’d say to help finish off that lounge area, put up a way to hang some cloth behind to act as a”paint/wallpaper”. Easy to take down maybe with clips to wash them. Would be a good backdrop
You might want to add some grounds to your boxes/outlets/switches. Also since they are metal boxes you might want to wrap them up in tape. Don't wrap them up crazy just one wrap around or two. But it will help if you have to get in there live or if something touches and pops the breaker.

Can we all stop and just give a quick shout out to R2? MAN PUTS IN WORK!!!!
Beep boop
R2 ftw
Yo R2 you the fork lift my dude!
It really should be R4…R2D2 was blue and R4D4 was red
I was just thinking that
Dont forget to put some steel plates under the shelves legs on the storage loft. Spread that load and save that wooden floor.

Good advice

Need a monster refrigerator
Green ground, white neutral, black hot!
🎉
ground can be black, as long as it's taped with phasing tape(Green).
Paint the underneath side of loft flooring white to brighten up the area. Look great 👍.
Not black though! Black sucks the light out of a room fast. I painted my garage ceiling black to look more sleek, and now I have to triple up on lights to overcome it.
Gray.

Your shop is filling up quite organized. Your little rest area is smart and would be even better as a Pod scene. Keep your videos coming, they are great!
Put kick boards around your loft areas, will stop you accidentally stepping off the edge or kicking something off and hitting something/someone below.
Man that’s looking real spiffy dude. Also stoked to hear the word podcast multiple times. That would be sick!
It’s insane how much you can inspire someone to build things and go outside of their comfort zone to learn new trades. Hats off to you Taylor!
