Never saw Raiden II at the arcades, though they had Raiden DX which was an awesome remix and my fav shooter until I discovered the mechanics of cave games via your channel 👍 There’s a neat Raiden arcade spin-off not wildly known and playable in MAME called ‘Viper Phase 1’ and it’s good to boot..
I'm sorry my dude ha! Yeah SF2 is the genesis of the FGC, so from that perspective, the 09'ers are still missing the first half of FGC history ha. 09'ers do tend to show a lot of love to the earlier games though, like SF2 and SF3, mostly because we played the games casually as kids (I have a really funny about me playing SF2 as a kid I should work into a video somehow ha).
Totally agree with Metal Slug 3, I always felt it was ‘too busy’ with some tedious damn hard levels and lots of cheap deaths (maybe I’m just crap at it lol). Definitely missing the fun and simplicity of “X” - my personal fav 👍 I’ve never had patience for cut scenes either, skip them all ha! (I’m looking at YOU Touhou..)
It seems like there's not much overlap between the Melee community and the shmup scene. Rollback has been a godsend. The freeform movement and combo system along with the never ending ability to improve makes Melee timeless. You seem to like a lot of games with limitless potential in terms of skill and player improvement. NG2 is also a favorite of mine although I prefer NGB on the OG Xbox. So much that I bought a new Xbox just to play them in 4K!
Yeah sadly melee and shmups are different worlds. I still enjoy both a lot though. And yes melee with rollback is a thing of beauty! Been enjoying ng2 on the xboxonex as well!
Awesome video, love to hear your stories on games from other genres. One game not many people know about is Knights in the Nightmare. It was released by Atlus on DS (later on PSP) as part of the Dept. Of Heaven series. It's Turn-based strategy RPG/Bullet hell shooter. Only game of its existence, mad crazy mechanics and as niche as unique as can be. Strongly recommended either in emulation or in it's original form.
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 . Never thought of it, but you are absolutely right, this should be amazing willl need to load it up on my PC and try it that way
Thanks for doing this topic man. Hopefully it does help to bring in some variety once in a while. :D Pretty sure Quake was my first, but Starcraft Brood War was also one of my first few online competitive games. Protoss were my go-to. :D Interesting observation about the connection between fighting game players and shmup players. I definitely enjoyed fighting games growing up, but mostly fell away from them after my late-teens. Shmups on the other hand stuck with me. Third Strike is my fave. :D When Smash Bros. Melee came out I was going to my friends house to play it everyday after school. The new Guilty Gear looks pretty cool. I might even pick that one up too. I'm a huge Dark Souls fan and I think I was a little too hard on Nioh at first, didn't hate it, mostly just didn't like the loot system. I think I need to give it another try and Nioh 2 is coming soon. I've enjoyed a lot of JRPGs like FF6, FF7, but as I've gotten older my patience for cut-scenes has definitely decreased. Most of the time I just want to get in and get right to the action, which is a big reason why I love shmups and why they are still one of my go-to genres to this day. These days I'm about 40/40/20 shmups, third person action (Soulsborne), and racing, mostly rally racing. If there's another genre besides fighting that has a spiritual connection to shmups it's definitely rally racing. :D
Thanks for supporting the channel my dude! Yeah racing games are ****ing awesome! Especially the arcade style ones (at least for me). I've tried to get into the hardcore simulation ones, like GT5, but am not enough of a car enthusiast to go that extra step. Actually, my favorite racing game is sort of a hybrid between the two called Project Gotham Racing on the Xbox, did you ever play that one? Another favorite of mine was this Initial D arcade racing game, sooooo much fun. I was about to buy a punch card for it online, but then my local arcade sold it off :-(
@@TheElectricUnderground I did play PGR. Great game. Think I had that on Dreamcast. I love Initial D. Not saying it's an easy game, but if you get used to more sim-like games Initial D becomes pretty easy generally speaking. :D
My MAN We have near-identical tastes. Amazing! Got excited when you started talking about Metal Slug 3 because I'm ALWAYS saying it's the worst of the original games.
I love it! Yeah Metal Slug 3 is nowhere near as great as 1 or even 2 (with the slowdown fix). What's funny is that, even though Metal Slug 4 is all recycled content, I actually enjoy the game a bit and view it as a really well-done romhack ha. Plus who doesn't love the double machine gun addition?
Lately the only games I play are Shmups (very badly i might add lol) and the Yakuza series! I'm also waiting to FINALLY get my Polymega and when i do actually get it will start playing through Policenauts with the translation patch
@@TheElectricUnderground from what I've heard so far it is indeed a killer soundtrack! Snatcher is already one of the top 10 games ever (possibly top 5!)
Love a run and gun myself and agree re Metal Slug 3 which was just a coin grabber - sometimes arcade games just don't translate to the home and that's usually the reason. My big game genre outside shooters is puzzle games; particularly Tetris but I'm also a fan of Puzzle Bobble - trying to 1CC Puzzle Bobble courses can be a challange. My next big love is arcade racing games with time trialling in particular - very satisfying trimming bits off best times against ghosts.
Yes man! I love racing games as well. My favorites are Project Gotham Racing (on console) and Initial D (on arcade). Another really really fun racing game is F-Zero GX! Have you ever seen the arcade machine for that ha? It looks insane.
@@TheElectricUnderground GX is a gorgeous game but I actually prefer X on the N64 - GX just gets a bit too difficult for its own good. (Have seen a GX arcade machine in an airport - wonderful looking thing). Daytona, Sega Rally, Outrun (original and C2C) and Mario Kart would be my other favourites.
I know my dude, hot take for sure. It's not a hipster thing or anything like that (if that helps). What happened is that, a few years back, I decided I was going to 1cc every Metal Slug game. I had a ton of fun with 1, 2 (with slowdown fix) and X, but when I came to playing 3, I found myself hating the game ha. It's pretty fun the first few times you play, but if you start to dedicate to doing a 1cc (at least for me), the game starts to feel ridiculous and way too long. The shmup stage is really great though!
If you have irl friends and want a local multiplayer game there's an arcade car battle game (technically not a racer) called BlazeRush and its probably the most fun I've ever had multiplayer. Specially 4 player survival mode. So fun.
As a follow up to this vid, it’d be cool to see a top 20-25 games of all time to give you plenty of breathing room for the various genres you like across platforms.
I’m playing NG2 for the first time and I’m so sad I didn’t get around to it after loving ninja gaiden 1 way back in the day, it’s a v special lil game even today. I’m stuck in the aqua capital levels atm, gaining on it chunk by chunk
Have you tried Granblue Fantasy Versus? Might fit the same space that you like in terms of fighters. It plays like a mix between Alpha 2/Alpha 3 meets an oldschool SNK game. Maybe even N/S-Groove Capcom vs. SNK 2 where you need fundamentals (and not flash or setup), short combos (as in, you don't need lab time to do most of them), and solid character archetypes. All of the characters in that game basically map to traditional fighting game characters to a T.
Surprised to not see you speaking abut Pinball. Those 90 tables and só on require a lot of reflexes , skills , and have some a complex design disguised and Simple controls
I agree on Metal Slug 3. It's way too long, and I really dont like the zombie level which kills the game's early momentum. My understanding is that SNK was on the verge of going under, so the MS3 guys just threw every unused asset and idea into the game cos they figured it was their last chance. The game does sometimes feel creative/unhinged, but overall it's a huge slog. I like Slug X and most and Slug 5 the least. I'm also an 09'er. Played SF4 competetively for many years but I gradually moved away from SF and got heavily into Blazblue and Guilty Gear. Not sure how I feel about Strive yet but I trust Arcsys to deliver.
Yeah man, I feel the same way about 3. The thing about Strive is that it will probably be less deep and amazing as Xrd, but at the same time I think there will still be enough meat left for solid competitive play. A loss for the hardcore GG players, most likely, but a win for the general fighting game players to step in and start establishing themselves ha.
@@TheElectricUnderground Definitely, these are also very challenging and gameplay dense games. Unlike other JRPGs it's not about leveling but strategic deck-building, covering own weaknesses and exploiting the enemies. Even minor mistakes can quickly lead to a complete wipe of ones own party. Since we seem to like the same type of games, I think you could potentially be interested in SMT. The best entry points are SMTIV, SMTV or Devil Survivor in my opinion.
Metal slug 3 gets too much especially at the end...but 4 is the worst...X the best (but still - contra 3 is the papi of that genre). Have you played Omega V the xbla game by natsume (forgotten worlds type game)...you may find it on the easy side but its a great game. I love a beat em up especially Vendetta
