A little background on the "Up there Cazaly" saying: Roy Cazaly played 198 games between 1911-1927 for St Kilda and South Melbourne. He was a ruck who was famous for big marks. At South Melbourne a teammate, Fred Fleiter, would often yell "Up there, Cazaly" to get him to leap for the mark. The crowd soon took up the shout. The words entered the Australian lingo as a phrase of encouragement and was apparently also used as a battle cry by diggers in WWII. It fell somewhat out of use but became resurgent with Mike Brady's 1979 hit song, the unofficial anthem of Aussie Rules.
And later on he was responsible for Hawthorn changing their name to the Hawks 😊
@@glencullinanan505 Wow, I didn't know that! He really did leave a big legacy :)
@@glencullinanan505 I don't think he would have to put much effort in to that change though. Couldn't imagine "c'mon the Mayblooms" lasting too long. Keep up the good work, John
if youre listening to up there cazaly you also have to hear 'one day in september' they go tegether
Will do it soon
"The thing about football" is a must then .. as well as the 80s VFL promotion collage to the tune "Playing to Win" by John Farnham and LRB.
OK YOUR IN , LETS GIVE HIM A VISA GUYS !
The other great song that is played at every grand final for the AFL is a song called the Holy Grail that was first sung by the Aussie band Hunters and Collectors, that i think you should react to mate. Loving the channel and we are glad you are loving one of our sports.
Up There Cazaly for me is about the pride and passion of the players and the fans of the sport.
I'm a crows fan who went to the 97 and 98 grand finals with my Dad when i was 11 and 12. The emotion we shared together through those times and just being together for it is one of my cherished memories. He died relatively young last year unfortunately so those moments we shared are even more special. Long live the game.
It still gives me chills and goose bumps after Fourty years... You have picked up the spirit and heart and guts of the game in just one season... It used to be played with this kind of heart. You'll never forget your first season, first Grand Final, first personal kick and first up there, Cazaly! You get it, mate! Good on ya!
"A way of life" Amen brother 💛🖤💛🖤💛
Absolutely Spot On!! No doubt about that
It’s a religion and a way of life
Amen brother 🔴⚫️🔴⚫️🔴⚫️🔴⚫️
go tiges
Goosebumps everytime I hear this song!
I got them too
I so got the goosebumps from the song
Mike Brady sang it at last year's grand final and the atmosphere was electric. Goosebumps stuff! It's the whole history behind the game that makes it really live I think. We are the custodians of our game.
Spot on. Absolute Goosebumps. Thanks Kiri
Mike Brady is a icon - The Grand Final will never be the same when he is no longer there to sing it!
When he sings it live it's just fantastic
Cazaly aka Roy Cazaly was a Stkilda player who was a big boy but could really fly through the air higher and mark higher than any one at the time. This then created the saying up there Cazaly. Love the vids keep up the work
Yep, as others say, " One day in September " is a finals song, Cazaly was Roy Cazaly was a champion in the early part of the 20th century. I still remember my dad lifting my little brother, saying "up there Cazaly"! Great memories Don.
It's Great to see another Scott's be Passionate about this great game . 🏉🏉
Cheers mate. Appreciate it 👍🏴🇦🇺
The guy who wrote the song (Mike Brady) actually lives half the year in Scotland ...he only comes back to Australia for the GF to sing it at the GF and all thing celebrations before
Wow. Thanks Sally. Great info
'Up there Cazaly' The AFL National Anthem
For historical accuracy... the title 'Up There Cazaly' was used and so were some of the lyrics. One of my late relatives fought with the 9th Division in the north during the Battle of EL Alamein and sang the song during the vicious, loud and chaotic engagement with the Germans. General Montgomery paid notice to the forces in the north as "eating the enemy's guts out. " And subsequently drew Rommel's Panzer units north, allowing operation 'Supercharge' to break the enemy's back further south.
The Australian fighting man always had enormous respect for the "blood thirsty Scots" whose battle discipline and fierceness was always found to be outstanding. Especially during WW1.
I think historical accuracy is important.
Thank you for your e-mail sir, a pleasant surprise. It is nice to have feedback. And you as a proud veteran... thank you for service.
I merely served as a RAAF electronics technician, was not tough enough to be part of your brotherhood.
It's like Christmas Eve here. The excitement level is off the dial. So thrilled that you have finally listened to our magnificent Footy Anthem. Mike Brady will (as ALWAYS) sing this at the 'G' tomorrow. I can't listen to this song without singing at the very top of my voice, fists pumping the air.
I am just so excited for you to experience tomorrow. Watch ALL of it, soak up the History, the Drama and the Passion. See you on the live-stream. :-)
Describes the FOOTY GRAND FINAL so well ❤❤
For further historical accuracy you might like to watch a 'youtube' video... ROY CAZALY: The greatest player between the two World Wars (AFL).
My great uncle Don went "over the top" on 2 occasions before, ironically, being shelled resting and having breakfast in the rear lines after a battle during WWI...
When talking about your country men, he told me... "When adding the word 'Scotsman' to any military unit was similar to adding carbon to steel making the steel less brittle and so much tougher.
Spent my teen years working out in Cazaly's Gym in Hobart. A family legacy that was being run by his son at the time.
If this song isn't every footy fans favourite song during footy season...are you even a footy fan? This song is not just a timeless classic. It is a heartfelt anthem of our sport.
I still have the vinyl record in the original cover
my favourite footy anthem
You be proud to know roy cazaly mum is scottish
I always love the water guy punching the opposing player.
It wouldn’t be a Grand Final without this song.
Derby County FC adopted the tune as an anthem.Their version with the lyrics called Steve Bloomer’s Watching.
When this song was written, VFL was an armature sport, and 15- 20% of all Melbounians went to a game on Saturday afternoon.
ooh thanks for wearing the t shirt and using the mug .....:-)
My pleasure 👍🐱
GO CATS!!!!!
Have just watched your video above - Cazaly mentioned in the song is Roy Cazaly - born in Victoria 1893 & died in Hobart (Tasmania) October 1963 - tried out with Carlton, then left to play for St Kilda & finished his career with South Melbourne (now the Sydney Swans) in 1941
We will absolutely welcome you as an Honorary Hawthorn Football Club Member. and as a sidelight,my Mother In Law was from Mary Hill in Glasgow.Right across the road from the Army
Thanks very much mate. Really appreciate it
@@TheDonsChannel there was a part of my message that was inadvertently Deleted Mate.the particular section was that my Late Mother In Laws Family were across the road from the Old Army Barracks in Mary Hill. And Also my younger Brother Gary Buckenara was in the Hawthorn Team in the 1980s.He wore the #11 Jumper.
You are spot on mate...spot on
Don if ur interested .....Thrs a footy fest on Channel 7 .....If ur able to get access that would be great .....Channel 7 normally do have a footy fest the day before the Grand Final .....Will be going on all night n all thru till Saturday morning .....They have on old footy games from the past etc ......When footy was footy ....Not how it is these days lol 🤣🤣🤣
Roy Cazaley was a very short player with an almighty leap
Some info on Roy Cazaly the subject of the song considered one of the best 25 players to never win a brownlow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Cazaly
What a player he must've been. I will check out the video later 👍
When you make it to melbourne I would gladly be your tour guide and translator. Trust me you will need a translator.
🤣🤣. Thanks very much Andrew. Appreciate it
The Dons... you need to get your ass down here for round 1 next year. Season opener Tigers vs the Blues. Even with the Blues been a bit average last few years these two still get crowds of 80k +. Go the Tigers 🐯. If I could afford it I’d pay for you and the family myself. Anyways... love your work
Thanks very much mate. I'd love that. We are looking to come in 2021
The Dons Channel ... great to hear. You’ll love it. If your looking for massive crowds at the G put the word out for honest advise from your viewers before you come. 100k is usually only for the Grand Final but 80-90k crowds are common -match depending.
looking forward to the big crowds at the G after a bad 2020 season well done to the tigers
Greg Champion - Thing about football. That’s my all time fav footy themed song but probably more apt for the season beginning. And of course the Hunters and Collectors - Holy Grail (Holy grail being the premiership)
Coming soon Dylan mate..
Back in the day those players had full time day jobs too
I love your work Don, go the tigers
Thanks very much Paul. I really appreciate it. 🐯
Great Video. I didn't know what to say but I felt I better comment.
🤣. Thank you for watching and for your kind words
Great video. Pity the Grand Final was such a fizzer.
Ur going to have to do "One Day in September" as well 😃😃
Lea or Holy Grail.

Ahhhhhhh Yes I forgot about that one ....By Hunters n Collectors 🙂🙂
And don't forget "That's the Thing About Football"
Straight up Dougie, I just got home and was going to send you 'Up There Cazaly', and 'Holy Grail'...lolz
@@LeaCollingwoodMagpies
Yes Hunters and collectors, such a good song.
This next one not a song to react to just thought you would like it Lea.

Great minds think alike. Ive held on to this one for today. I will do the others aswell
If you loved this you should check out “I do love a Saturday arvo” it’s full of old footage and an absolute banger!
Should react to the 2019 version of this Better sound and u get to see the passion the fans put in to signing this song before the first bounce
"the Holy Grail" by hunters and collectors is great if you can find the song version that uses footy as its film-clip. Just please for once try on St kilda colours.... Haha! Love your work mate, your content will help us through this no footy virus season. Aussies are getting withdrawls already!
I would put them on but I don't have any. 😂. Thanks very much mate. There will be loads more AFL vid to come.
I doubt it will be as good as last year, i've a feeling richmond will smash them. But who knows.
yes every one l will missing AFL Season with 2021 and l will go for Adelaide Crows all the way We Fly As One ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You got it in an essence. So you will have to watch 'The Club' to end the season. It's a classic film about Aussie Rules in the seventies with cameo performances from Collingwood players of the time and some of Australia's great actors and writers. It is still very relevant to even these times. I used to have a copy. Anyway, go Tiges!
Yeah that’s a classic tune for the AFL/VFL been around longer than I’ve been alive I think lol
You were talking about emotion, did you happen to see the Fernando Rickson documentary following his last few years? I lasted 7 mins before the eyes stated watering but they started flowing near the end. So sad and a true inspiration of the fighter that he was .
1979 is when that song first came about 🙂🙂
Yes mate. Absolutely heartbreaking. He was a warrior until the end.
Lea Magpies Evans oh ok I was 2 yo lol
The Dons Channel yeah indeed , warrior on the pitch and in life.
@@bigoz1977
I was 9 years old when that song came out LOL 🤣🤣
Should react to AFL team songs, each club has their own
He already has.
It's all about the song Dom, that's Melbourne's national anthem my bro
"The originated in WW2 by Australian soldiers going into battle.
No Essendon gear?
Heya Don Father....small bit of info... Western Bulldogs nee Footscray... Brisbane Lions nee Fitzroy.... and... Sydney Swans nee South Melbourne
