AFL is played during the Australian winter, the grand final is played in late September, usually at the MCG in Melbourne. There's a players parade, and a grand final breakfast, awards for best players, and all sorts of other end of season events in the preceding week. As far as fans are concerned, AFL is not a matter of life and death, it's more important than that. You can't push a player in the back, or hit them in the head. You also can't grab, or hold onto, a player's clothing. You saw a few examples of the "hip and shoulder charge" a very effective way of knocking an opponent out of the way. It is a contact sport, but the lack of any protective gear means most players don't actually try to hurt each other deliberately.
French Tastic thank you for your reaction to AFL. This was the first time I ever seen something like this before and thought I knew all sports out there.
Is actually a winter sport, far to hot in Australia's summer to do that much running, a mid-fielder can run 16-18kms in a game. The Grand Final is normally the last weekend in September, with a crowd of 100,000 (MCG holds 100,024 seats, and is a sell-out every non-covid year). Best all around athletes in the world, ie soccer players more skilful with their feet, but dont have to jump, catch, bounce, tackle, handpass etc, Basketball might be more agile, but no kicking and alot less endurance, Rugby players are bigger and stronger but dont have the hand and foot skills, or endurance.

We hold the players to high standards if they break rules on or off the ground can cause them to be dismissed. The Grandfinal is in September and a huge deal if your team is in it even better
And we aren't generally aggressive supporters either; we are very loyal and emotional supporters, but there tends to be very little aggression involved between the supporters of different teams.
First official rules set for the game in 1859. Started in Melbourne as a way for cricketers to keep fit. It's the link to cricket that has them playing on the same size field Grand final is usually around late September
An AFL season spans for 6 months, starting from early-mid March until the final Saturday in September which is when the Grand Final is played. I highly suggest watching the 2021 AFL grand final mini match

Love the AFL. What's fun is when the NFL brings a player over. They turn them into punters because of their ability to kick the crap out of the ball. San Diego had a AFL player that was awesome. Unlike most punters in the NFL that avoid contact whenever possible, this guy would go down and punish anyone that had the audacity to return one of his punts.

Hi Marie, great video and great reaction. AFL is my kind of football and Essendon is my team. (black and red colours) If you are interested in more AFL you should certainly watch the best marks (catches) and the best goals. And perhaps something about the best players such as Buddy Franklin, Eddie Betts and Dustin Martin to name a few. Before a game, the players run through a large banner prepared by their supporters (the cheer squad) as they run onto the oval. Each club has their own theme song; many based on 19th century songs with trumpets and the like. The club theme songs are worth a reaction video if you're interested. To clarify using your opponent to catch the ball; yes you can jump on him or use as a springboard (don't be dangerous about it). If you take the mark, then you can take the kick. If you don't, you give away a free kick to your opponent. Go bombers!
it has been around since 1850's, it started in Victoria to keep the cricket players fit over the winter months, the Grand Final is played in September. the men have a pro league and in the past few years woman have also got a pro league.
Hey French girl i'm glad you enjoyed our national game....it put a smile on my dial watching your reaction. If you like getting the stuffing knocked out of you you will love playing this game. We are concerned about the amount of concussions, no more than most contact sports, there have been some rule tweaks to try and address this. Come over and watch a game live, the atmosphere is unique and after you will be well and truly hooked.
It's the off season at the moment. The season is played through the Aussie winter and the grand final (the "granny") is traditionally the last Saturday in September.
It is a winter sport in Australia, played between about March to September. There is also women's Football which starts in Jan/Feb. The AFL seems pretty good about not blocking reactors, so I think you are safe.
Note the ball is not only not a round (perfectly predictable) soccer ball, and also it is different to a Rugby Union and Rugby League ball and need I say, an NFL ball. Rules will be strange with hand passes and having to bounce ball on ground every so many strides. Great for player's confidence...they register six points for a clean shot between the big posts but if they miss ad ball goes inside smaller posts they get one point for turning up.
Australian Rules has been around since the mid-1800s, older than most other football styles. It was supposedly devised to keep cricketers active during the off-season.
Australian Rules football was invented in 1859 but it's never been recognized anywhere else only until recent years. It's a great game. My Dad played it and so did I on a high school team.
What a crazy sport!! Looks super fun! I don't think I've ever seen it before - if so I probably thought it was rugby. Amazing athletes. For a port that has rules it sure doesn't seem to. :0) Would love to see a match. Thanks Marie! Hello from Harper 🐺 :0)
@@buff_stuff Australian Football? Tom Wills was sent to rugby school for a few years and returned with knowledge of the game in 1856. He encouraged cricketers to play the game to stay in shape during cricket's off-season. Since "football" codes in England were different depending on what school you went to, there was no real concept of what football should really look like. The sport quickly became popular and a set of rules were established, the "Melbourn Rules" of 1859.
Believe it or not but AFL is played mostly through our coldest months of our year, It starts in March and the Grand Final is in late September, so it starts in our Autumn, goes through our Winter and finishes in Spring. The weather can be very cold and also raining but the running around helps keep you warm The players wear the same uniform all year, its rare for any player to wear a jumper with sleeves, 99.99% of them wear just what you saw in the clip. Its the greatest sport in the world! I can't wait to go to a game again next year now that we are getting on top of Covid, I only got to go to one game this year. If you ever visit Australia, make sure you attend a game. Its amazing :) I follow Hawthorn aka The Mighty Hawks :) Each team has a Suburb name and an associated animal or thing. My team, the Hawks, or Hawthorn which is a suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne in Victoria. The Grand Final can have as many as 100, 000 spectators, I have been lucky enough to attend 4 of them in my life :)
I have a lot of copyright issues on my channel, with content that normally other people have no problem with. It could be because I’m based in France 🇫🇷
Don't worry. I don't think the AFL will block you. I have seen many of these AFL reaction videos from the USA, the UK and Italy. The NRL are fussy, but the AFL don't mind. You can stream a reaction to a live game but you cannot show the game live on UA-cam. Videos are no problem at all, so go for it. You're the first French person to react to AFL I have seen.
Mate, the AFL season generally runs from late March to late September, during the Australian winter months. The Grand Final is normally played on the last Saturday in September... Tschüss aus Australien.
Welcome to AFL the best footy game in thw world, and one of the oldest sports recorded...Loved your reaction, AFL is a winter sport here in Australia. The AFL Grand Final is normaly played in September in Melbourne but Covid-19 changed that last year but we are hoping it will be played as normal in Melb this coming Sept.
You might be interested that the AFL now has the AFLW - the early stages of bringing the women's game into the professional ranks. Pretty sure there will be highlights on the AFLW's website. The women have some distance to go but you can't fault their commitment and tackling skills.
Afl games start late march and continue thru to September when finals start. It's actually an Australian winter sport played thru autumn winter and spring. Cricket is Australian summer sport. Aussie rules brought together the nationalities that lived in Australia at the time and parts of the games they played back in the 1800's like basketball, rugby, soccer, Gaelic football and an aboriginal sport they played to produce the game we all watch now. Which is why you see so many characteristics of other sports in our game.
Aussies Rules Footy is a fast exciting game with non-stop action. It is not shown in other countries because it will steal viewers from other football codes. While most sports are based on keeping possession. AFL It is based on _keeping's-off_ so the ball is always moving. It is the oldest football code in the world ... Started in 1851 It has the highest percentage (41%) of women attending AFL games compared to other football codes. There is a Women's League AFLW and almost 30% of women participate.
That leap on to the shoulders to gain leverage for height is extremely dangerous...could easily go wrong and do severe damage to other player's neck / spine if he alignment is miscued.
@@flamingfrancis to be honest most people that get hurt in those scenarios is the players jumping over the top as you concentrate on the ball and don't think about the landing.
The AFL are always trying to show the game around the world. So they actually like UA-camrs reacting to their videos. There are no other televised Australian Football leagues in other countries, so it is not a problem. By reacting to the official videos you are helping the AFL grow their game.
Great reactions and sexy accent. The AFL season is March to late September or early October, so unfortunately you have missed this year's season. However, the AFLW (women's version of the game) starts on 6th January 2022, so you might want to check that out. You picked up the fact that it is a fast game. This is true. Sometimes the ball can be moved from one end of the ground (which is around 180 m long) to the other very rapidly (fastest I have seen is 12 second) by a combination of running with the ball and passing to team mates by hand or foot. You also noticed that it is "violent". It is true that the players need to be tough, but much of the violence that used to occur has been weeded out by the application of tough penalties for offending players. You also recognised that there are elements of many different games in Australian rules football. This is true but it is not because Australian rules football was derived from lots of other sports. Australian rules football is actually a pretty old game. The very first game was between two Melbourne schools in 1858 and the rules were codified in 1859, which earlier than rugby (1871), association football (which we call soccer, 1864) and American football (1873). It was invented as a way of keeping cricketers fit in winter. That is why it is played on an oval ground (pitch or field). Often, the ground is used for football in winter and cricket in summer. The Grand Final attendance is actually normally 100,000, which I guess is "90,000+", but that is a weird way that they said it. It is true that the Grand Final is normally held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) but, because of COVID restrictions, it was held at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2020 and Perth Stadium in 2021.
Yes they have teeth guards AFL is Australian Football League and children play football as soon as they start school . We now have an all girls football team Nationally Cheers 🇦🇺🐨🐨🇦🇺❤️
You would be aware Aussies love their sport. AFL began in the winter of 1858. It was created by Englishmen, based on sports played at English public schools and wanting to keep cricketers fit during the winter months (Jun-Aug) as cricket in Australia is played in Summer (Dec-Feb). Melbourne and Geelong founded in 1858 and 1859 are among the oldest continuous sporting clubs in the world. The AFL winter season is March to September. In the state of Victoria, the government grant September 24 as a public holiday for the AFL Grand Final (generally the Friday before Saturday's Grand Final).
It might look like they combined other sports to make this game but in fact Aussie Rules is older than those other sports. It dates back to the 1850's It is played in winter as it was designed for cricket players to keep fit in the winter time. Just remember our winter is your summer. You will have to wait till it starts again after the summer.
@@macdac9861 yes I agree it was modelled off Rugby and Soccer (or English Football) . I was only referring to how many Americans equate it to NFL or Basketball. It's the same when some people react to Cricket saying that they got pieces of it from Baseball.

Unfortunately the mens afl season has ended for 2021, the Grand Final was on September 25 between Melbourne and Western Bulldogs. The good news though is that the women’s season, AFLW, starts in January. It is a much shorter season than the men’s, and there are only 14 teams instead of 18, but it’s growing all the time (AFLW started in 2017, whereas AFL started as VFL back in 1897). Australian Rules football actually was devised back in 1858 when Tom Wills of the Melbourne cricket Club proposed a sport to keep the cricket players fit in the winter and from there the Melbourne Football Club was born. Nope, that's winter. AFL is a winter sport, although the Grand Final is actually played in early spring. If those guys tried to run 22 km in mid summer in 2 hours in Australia they would die from heat stroke.
Most Australians live in the two states dominated by Rugby League, but it doesn't have the phenomenal popularity of Australian Rules football you find in the rest of the country. That's because Rugby League is traditionally a working class game and for that reason it doesn't appeal to everyone. But I think here has been highlighted another reason for the difference in popularity. The average rugby league player, whilst powerfully built, hasn't got the tall athletic figure that attracts women to AFL. Also, it doesn't hurt that because AFL players are reaching up so much to catch the ball, they wear sleeveless shirts that show off their muscular arms and shoulders. Since their shirts are so skimpy it would look strange if they had baggy shorts so they've always worn tight shorts as well. It can be argued that the women in Melbourne are more fanatical than the men about footie.

The AFL channel doesn't normally block. Plenty of other people have reacted with out being blocked.
OMG - You are gorgeous. Your reactions to our game was great. Women play the game as well and they are amazing to watch. (AFLW)
Aussie Rules is played through winter, starting in mid March and ending with the Grand Final in late September.
First official rules set for the game in 1859. Started in Melbourne as a way for cricketers to keep fit. It's the link to cricket that has them playing on the same size field
Grand final is usually around late September
The AFL grand final made history this year as it was played for the first time since the inception of the game and league in Perth Western Australia
An AFL season spans for 6 months, starting from early-mid March until the final Saturday in September which is when the Grand Final is played. I highly suggest watching the 2021 AFL grand final mini match

Sporting capital of the world, what a typical wankish Melbourne thing to say!
Umm actually no your not the most liveable city in the world, havent been since 2016. Melbourne came in 9th in 2021, Adelaide was the highest ranked Australian city at no 3! So your not even the most liveable city in Australia. But hey any chance you melburnians have to give yourselfs a handchandy.

Kudos to being the only person I've seen react that then straight away watched actual game play..
Are You talking about Saverio Rocca?? I cant remember who he played for in the nfl is why im asking.

Hi French girl, so nice to see you liking our AFL, there is such a great atmosphere at these games as its so fast and usually a lot of goals scored
5:16 its a winter sport but it starts in march/april and the regular season ends in August. The finala run through september. The last saturday in September is the day of the grand final
Footie used to be on American sports channel ESPN back in the 80s. I watched it a lot.

Go bombers!
You can find so much on you tube and the season starts in the last weekend of March to the last Saturday of September
it has been around since 1850's, it started in Victoria to keep the cricket players fit over the winter months, the Grand Final is played in September. the men have a pro league and in the past few years woman have also got a pro league.
Good to see you like this game, lm a port Adelaide supporter 👍
Great to see you enjoyed it. It truly is an awesome game. : )
Actually it's played through the autumn and winter as it starts in march which is the first month of autumn and there's 3 months in autumn
Honey, your reaction to sports is so fun to watch. You would be wonderful to have at a Football Game.
It looks tougher than American football, since they don’t wear any protective equipment.
It's roots are in old Rugby and pre-association football, that's why it looks similar.
You should check out "Go inside the 2020 Grand Final".
@@DougsShack its roots are not in rugby? Who told you that?
Originally an indigenous game

I am surprised AFL blocked the video, they haven't blocked any other people doing reactions to what is AFL?
I have a lot of copyright issues on my channel, with content that normally other people have no problem with. It could be because I’m based in France 🇫🇷
@@FrenchTastic Perhaps reach out to the AFL. From all accounts they are extremely helpful.
The season runs from about March to September.
The Grand Final is played on the last Saturday in September
Started in 1851
It has the highest percentage (41%) of women attending AFL games compared to other football codes.
There is a Women's League AFLW and almost 30% of women participate.
When someone jumps on you and takes a mark it hurts pride more than physically most of the time
That leap on to the shoulders to gain leverage for height is extremely dangerous...could easily go wrong and do severe damage to other player's neck / spine if he alignment is miscued.

7:45 that's a hip and shoulder perfectly legal providing the shoulder doesn't make contact with the opponents head
As an Aussie I can reassure you that the AFL will love and appreciate any and all free promotion they can get so go nuts ;)
Wow, THAT game looks hard and rough.
No other sport asks more questions of its competitors
I haven’t heard that it was invented by an Englishman, I always understood AFL was started by an Australian born fella called Thomas Wills.
@@IcanBePsycho That's correct! Thomas Wills was Australian born but educated in England. He was the grandson of a convict I believe.
@@IcanBePsycho Hammersley, Bryant & another were English born. I believe Wills was Australian born & umpired the first match.
It's starts at the end of may till the last Saturday in September
It might look like they combined other sports to make this game but in fact Aussie Rules is older than those other sports. It dates back to the 1850's It is played in winter as it was designed for cricket players to keep fit in the winter time. Just remember our winter is your summer. You will have to wait till it starts again after the summer.
It’s the oldest competition, not the oldest sport. It was influenced by other types of football
@@macdac9861 yes I agree it was modelled off Rugby and Soccer (or English Football) . I was only referring to how many Americans equate it to NFL or Basketball. It's the same when some people react to Cricket saying that they got pieces of it from Baseball.
@@Notric I was just being particular about semantics. The point you are making is right, Australia has been doing its own thing for a long long time…..well most of Australia, NSW’s inferiority complex means they can’t defer to Vic about anything leaving them and QLD left with the pommy import
Little Ladie you should watch AFL biggest hits , and just so you know AFL is a winter game
Melbourne actually d we on this years premiership, their 13th, but their first since 1964, so we as Melbourne fans were very excited. I’ll post you a link to the game in full if you would like to watch it.

The 2022 season has just started. Not sure what options you have in France to watch though?
I think violent may be the wrong word. I’d use the word rough in its place
