Raptors with Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan had a two year window to hopefully make the finals off the backs of two players that have had previous struggles in the post-season. By this trade the Raptors have cut their immediate window to one year on the back of a former finals MVP. It's a risk sure, but realistically the Raptors had no chance of making the finals (or even think about a championship) before the trade. Now if all things go right, this is by far the best chance the Raptors have at making it out of the east and at least being in the conversation for a championship. If things don't work out with Kawhi, Masai's plan was to build around a core of OG, Siakam and Fred (players that he drafted) for the future anyways. I think this was a smart and calculated risk for Masai to go all out and maximize the ceiling of this current iteration of players and not go out like the Atlanta Hawks did a couple seasons ago.

As an NBA fan from another city, you'd know that was not the case. Yes, Casey did win COTY but his plays and substitutions were VERY questionable. Diehard Raptors fans have been calling for his firing for years even with the 50+ win seasons! He was a reactionary coach and was often very slow to make said adjustments. I do see how fans outside the city might think that he's great based on the team's record. COTY means nothing, Sam Mitchell was the COTY. Was Scott Brooks a great coach? Now the argument could be made that Sam Mitchell did NOT have the stars around him to win a championship, but I'd argue that he didn't put them in a situation to succeed or they didn't have the star that could do that anyways (If he did coach well) hence Kawhi Leonard.

Raptors with Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan had a two year window to hopefully make the finals off the backs of two players that have had previous struggles in the post-season. By this trade the Raptors have cut their immediate window to one year on the back of a former finals MVP. It's a risk sure, but realistically the Raptors had no chance of making the finals (or even think about a championship) before the trade. Now if all things go right, this is by far the best chance the Raptors have at making it out of the east and at least being in the conversation for a championship.
If things don't work out with Kawhi, Masai's plan was to build around a core of OG, Siakam and Fred (players that he drafted) for the future anyways. I think this was a smart and calculated risk for Masai to go all out and maximize the ceiling of this current iteration of players and not go out like the Atlanta Hawks did a couple seasons ago.

I'm from Toronto and this isn't a great deal but not a bad deal. Kawhi, Danny Green, and OG gonna give Hayward, Brown, and Tatum fits. Pascal JV and Ibaka are a little better than Baynes, Morris and Horford imo. The x factor is the PG position where Rozier and Irving are better than Lowry and Wright.
