  • Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
  • In this rare video from August 5th, 1995, Smoky Mountain Wrestling hosts a cookout featuring some very prominent heels as part of SMW Fan Week.
Yes, Jim Cornette -- the promoter of SMW and wrestling historian notorious for becoming enraged when this generation's wrestlers break kayfabe and expose the business -- is seen here breaking kayfabe and exposing the business in 1995, much like he does weekly revealing pro wrestling secrets free of charge on his podcast.
Featuring appearances by Jim Cornette, Kane during his time as Issac Yankem, D'lo Brown, Al Snow, Buddy Landel, Jimmy Del Ray, and Pro Wrestling Illustrated's Bill Apter.
    Highlights include:
-Al Snow making claims of being offered $160,000 from WCW.
-Jim Cornette talks with fans about how to properly book a wrestling card and financial figures, shoots on Ronnie Garvin & Tim Horner, and tells a story about Jimmy Del Ray setting someone's head on fire.
-Bill Apter impersonates Dusty Rhodes, Bruno Sammartino, Antonino Rocca, Pedro Morales, Terry Funk, The Iron Sheik, Lou Albano, The Grand Wizard, Hulk Hogan in The Dungeon of Doom, Buddy Rogers, and Jimmy Snuka.
-Buddy Landel tells a story about traveling with Ricky Morton & Iron Sheik over the border.
    -and more!

I dont see this as Corny "exposing the business". He is simply fulfilling his obligation to the SMW fans who loved and appreciated his promotion, while having a day to just relax from the stress of operating that business. If anything, I think he's protecting the business. There are no babyfaces. His passion for the business is unmatched! And he never would have thought that a home video recording would be mass distributed to an internet company that wouldn't even exist for another 10-15 years.

This was also a bunch of smart fans. It's not like he was talking to a television audience or a huge crowd of people. These people knew wrestling was a work, they were reading the sheets.

@@GregS-1981 smart fans back then was very rare or a very small niche, they had to have a foot in the back door, weather they knew people, helped at shows etc....Cuz back then majority of the fan was still wondering if it was real or not... nowadays much of that smart knowledge can be gained without even having to do any of that stuff from the past. lol

It's pretty clear that the person who wrote the Description above hasn't really listened to Cornette and doesn't understand the things in modern wrestling that irk him. They try to make him sound like a hypocrite, with the argument that "he becomes enraged when young wrestlers break kayfabe and expose the business, but he does the same thing on his podcast!". This is the argument of someone who is totally clueless. They know the bare bones basic facts of the situation and just want to bury Cornette. As far as "exposing the business", that cat's been out of the bag for 30+ years, and Cornette is well aware of this fact. He's been doing shoot interviews for over a decade, I think starting with the Sean Oliver KC stuff. The things that he hates about modern wrestling go a lot further than just "breaking kayfabe"
First of all, about this video... this cookout was part of "Fan Week", where smart fans had come in for the Superbowl of Wrestling and that week's worth of shows. This wasn't advertised to the general public. Feinstein started doing his shoot interviews around the same time, and I remember Eddie Gilbert doing one in '93-'94ish. And this video wasn't going to be sold by SMW, or anyone else for that matter. Plus it's not exactly a gripping exposé of the business. It's mostly Bill Apter doing impressions lol
There's a world of difference between this and the things that Corny dislikes, e.g. wrestling sex dolls & small children, a ring full of men selling an "invisible grenade", conga lines with guys sticking their thumbs in each other's asses, penis flipping, etc. THAT is the type of dreck that Cornette cannot stand. Not somebody simply breaking kayfabe in an interview or book or whatever. I'm sure he doesn't like the fact that everyone breaks character on Twitter, or immediately after the show at a press conference, but the man's not an idiot. He gets offended when you really thumb your nose as the sport of wrestling
Also notice that it's "Cookout with Heels"... So even in dealing with the smart fans here he isn't bringing the babyfaces and heels together. If you can't see the difference between this cookout and someone going into the ring at a live show and literally pretending to wrestle a blow up doll, then I think you're a lost cause...
