Spencer didn't even use one of his Pokémon. That Venusaur was an absolute tank for this fight.
For real, these videos have shown me what a powerhouse tank Venusaur is.

Watson made it closer in the end than I thought he would, but Spenser played too well in the early and mid game. It'll be interesting to see what he does going forward.
Wow, the RNG went almost ENTIRELY on Spenser's side this whole game. That goddamn Venusaur especially.
Spenser has bad luck with paralizis, but that critic againts Electivire was crucial
wattson also made some very questionable moves, suicune could easily set up on his team despite being weak to electric so i dont think it mattered that much tbh. it would’ve just been a much more interesting fight
4 full paralysis on one and 1 on another is having RNGsus on your side?

@@LichLordFortissimo I say rngsus was pretty fair this match, crit on both sides, if anything 5 full paralysis is kinda overkill, what you should say is making decisions like using knock off on a venasaur that already used its berry and has giga drain that can almost ohko your raichu and thus basically recover more damage than you can deal was a bad idea

I was kind of hoping this battle would happen without finding out what the mystery Pokemon was. I'd like to see someone advance past the first round without revealing their wild card.
That Venusaur was just too much for Wattson- he lost the moment that Giga Drain crit on Electivire and took it out.

@@ksoundkaiju9256 yeah it did and the Situs Berry was good tech too. Even outside of that though, I still didn’t see him winning though. A Mono electric team is good offensively but against a balanced team it’s easily walled. It’s just not good.

@@cygnusprime6728 not to mention none of Wattson's electric pokemon could get paralyzed from Body Slam so Giga Impact makes the most sense

@@OurKindofEntertainment good point. I often forget that can't get paralyzed. Maybe next video they'll give it giga impact. Slaking would be downright terrifying with an adamant nature.

I was SO pissed that Electivire fainted so soon! It felt really undeserved, but Wattson put some fight after all. Good job. I have a strong feeling that Hoenn might just be really bad for Gym Leaders, as they usually have monotype teams, or lack coverage...Well, I'm looking forward to more battles! Keep up the great work, please!
Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. There are way too many trainers with diverse and powerful teams, that can sadly just crush these mono teams.

Spenser: Ugh ... grr! The tongue of an insolent youth in the soft body of a man who cannot climb stairs without an electric lift to do the work for him! For this, I will thrash you with every ounce of my true power!
Wattson: Go ahead and try, monkey-face! I'll shock your little nature preserve pets into submission and turn your ridiculous excuse for a "Palace" into my next Mauville expansion! HAHAHAHAHA!

Critical hit with the giga drain on the Electivire was key moment of this game, otherwise that Venesaur was out and Watson did not had to waste 3 other pokemon to it.

Venusaur on Wattson's team was like. Hey, nice team you got there! LMAO
Wattson has an obvious edge, with three of Spenser's Pokemon being weak to every Pokemon on Wattson's team. That means Venusaur will likely be the most important Pokemon in Spenser's crew, and Slaking might get a surprising amount of use if it has Earthquake. With Choice Band or Life Orb to increase its power, it could potentially wreck any Pokemon on Wattson's team, if none of them have Protect. The question is, would Spenser be able to predict a switch into Rotom and its Levitate? If Wattson does and Spenser doesn't, Slaking could quickly become dead weight, doubly so if it gets paralyzed or burned.
I hope Wattson takes this, 'cause he's a great guy I was glad to help with his projects. Spenser, on the other hand, is a blustering old dinosaur who can't win a symbol match to save his life without gimping the protagonist with those ridiculous Battle Palace rules. Zap him, Wattson!
Edit: Arceus damn it! I wanted Spenser to lose and lose hard, but that freaking Venusaur just refused to go down. Lots of luck on both sides (Spenser constantly getting criticals, dodging the Will-O-Wisp, AND getting paralyzed), but what really cut Wattson's chances was just his team being too worn down after they all fought Venusaur. Well, guess I've just gotta put my hopes on Maxie or Brandon to avenge this in Round 2!
I was hoping the tournament was going to be postponed until Watson's story in pokemon masters could come out and he'd have his Mega Manetric.
@@2hotyscotty13 I wouldn't have wanted the tournament to be postponed, but yeah, I wish that Wattson had Mega Manectric, too. It has a similar fast, hard-hitting pivot strategy to Mega-Beedrill, and we saw how crazily effective that thing was in the Johto Tournament. Wattson could have wrapped this one up with Mega-Tric in his court.
I'm surprised he didn't have flamethrower on his Manetric
@@2hotyscotty13 He probably did, but Venusaur kept switching out for Arcanine: Wattson didn't use Flamethrower or Overheat because Arcanine would have just absorbed it with Flash Fire.
@@AHEM1313 good point. That electivire going down with a combo move with leech seed killing it off really hurt watson. Hopefully, he does as well as Blaine did in the first tournament. Since they are very similar in more than a few ways team wise.

This tournament is going to be LOOOONG, I mean we got new gym leaders, the Elite Four, multiple champions, a whole ass Battle Frontier, some sick villains, in addition to trainers. Annnnnnnnd I’m all for this, I don’t care if this lasts till 2021!!
This was awesome I was always a big fan of Spencer!! I want to see him battle Drake so bad
For never playing emerald, I only ever heard of the frontier from the anime and from a friend playing it but he didn’t mention individual trainers. Spenser was one of the few episodes I watched with the frontier and I remember a race between venusaur and sceptile through the jungle before a grass vs grass battle. Fantastic to see that bond in this battle with the looping heal tricks similar to a jungle swing

I think the battle frontier trainers will usually have the advantage thanks to diverse teams and legendary Pokémon but I may be surprised

Hey Silph, I’ve been watching since before the Kanto tournament and I love your content. I’ve always wondered who the players were controlling these teams though. Is it all you or do you have other people captain these teams?
It's always great to see a battle between veteran trainers.
This will be a very great and interesting tournament considering the gym leaders have a certain Favourite type while the frontier brains All run mixed types.

Spencer had two water pokemon against electric team. Also his slaking will be such a hinderance.
Post battle analysis:
Wattson underestimated how much of a threat Venasaur was, and not paralyzing it (even if it meant overextending) before sending Electivire was a fatal mistake that cost him the battle right there. Electivire is strong but loses to hard defense unless it is weak to Electric.
Personal note: This battle reminded me of Shulk VS Egil from Xenoblade Chronicles. "Your blade. It did not cut deep enough!"

Slaking is such a wild card because it could one shot anything in Wattson team, though Truant combine with paralysis (and I am sure plenty of thunder wave is coming his way) would be a deathblow to Spencer.

How can a Mono-Electric Team against a team with no immunities use Volt Switch with only two mons? And then on his defensive mons of all things.
Volt Switch is one of the best moves to have on any electric type, as it is a base 70 power STAB utility move with pivot capabilities?
Wattsons team is really solid over all, but I do think that the movesets are subpar.
I don't usually have many issues but seriously.
Why does the raichu not have fake out?
Why does nothing on Watson's team have protect?
Also the amount of clutch crits the venasaur got was insane.
If you redo that battle and the venasaur did not get those last second crit giga drains, it would be a very very different battle.

@@hammalamiri12 No. When you are running support/screens Electrode, it's best to not run T-bolt since you won't have much offensive potential

-Light Screen
-Reflect
-Taunt
-Volt Switch/Explosion
Usually volt switch is best since it the foe switches out expecting offensive Electrode(which almost none use competetively) to get in your teammate safely, or to switch out safely anf have another round to set uo screens. There is practically no reason to use thunderbolt on Electrode.
