The first of the Royal Navy’s new ‘eyes in the sky’ getting ready to protect the nation’s flagship.
The Merlin Crowsnest helicopter, which scours the heavens with its radar looking for potential foes.
The distinctive-looking helicopter with a large radar dome sticks out from the fuselage, earning the aircraft the affectionate nickname of ‘baggers’, will provide airborne surveillance and the control of other aircraft in the carrier’s strike group.

Looks good The need is for a better system but this is good start
All hail the return of the baggers! if we'd had proper carriers we could have bought the american Grumman Hawkeye EC2000 AWACS with proper radar proper range and proper speed not a half arsed super glued to a helicopter system.
if i am not mistaking a refit to put the e mag cats on is planned and that may open the possiblility of the hawkeye
@@ingendukjennerv2198 There's no requirement to operate the hawkeye.
@@jimmoynahan9910 there isn't a requirement that I know of either but that is not what I said I wrote that the queen Elizabeth class can be refitted to use magnetic launchers and that would open up a possibility so they are able to launch Hawkeyes I know that is not a plan as far as I know
👍😊
Intro music just a tad OTT me thinks!
My neighbour used to service and repair Gnome turbines.
We should have gone with cats/traps in the carriers
Could have the hawkeye and f35c
first refit - only so much you can get past the bean counters in one go, plus the only non vtol jet we have is Typhoon, which isn't marinised. But cats and traps would allow for better cross deck ops with the yanks. I think the MoD was also waiting to see if the electric ones would actually work before committing.
Why? Ski-ramp is better as it allows takeoff in ALL-WEATHER. And the F-35B sis better than the F-35C.
EMALS was thought to maybe not work, be delayed etc.
Amazing video and great to watch.
Intro sounds like T2
If it's as effective as it is goofy looking I suppose it'll be devastating.
can they be refuelled in the air ? how long can they stay on patrol ? and yes what stops the radar emissions frying the crew ?
yes, 1000km range just under 5 hours of flying , and probably the fact the radar is mounted under the helicopter when active and not pointing at the fkn crew .
@@furiousscotsman2916 Whats it like cats and traps would be cheaper and operate a proper Awacs plane but no the mod criminals use this thing.
Should have bought V22 Ospreys from the US they are better in every way.
Mh60 r is better
It would be better with a chain gun on the cockpit turret.
Chain gun rear.
2 gpmg on side doors.
Good for protection.
sitting high above the fleet would be an ideal target for the adversaries missiles, i guess that's why there's only 3 on board?
I guess that’s why the fleet has its own air defence 🤷🏼♂️
Yet the sole purpose of the aircraft is to detect the very threat your talking about chad
Should using F35C with E-2D
Nah should be using F-35B.
Seakings in my day with this radar were known as "Flying Bollocks"
wasnt' this supposed to be hosted by the LARGER Merlin variant ?
Oh dear, not the best option for Airborne Early Warning. Would have thought a high altitude, long endurance piston driven drone was the best option for the job. The helicopter crews are going to get fatigued very quickly trying to maintain a 24 hour CAP over the task force.
70s lift music at the end.
I respect the people who serve but the govt can rot.
So the ‘kings were lots of metal suppressing the analogue radiation from burning the jewels of the crew. This lump of carbon fibre will have to have some SERIOUS rad protection and thus weight todo the same. Oh dear.....
Pay a hefty price for the lack of a catapult and arrester gear.
Helicopters have limited flight, why to we not have long flight radar drones above the carrier group? It would make more sense.
Smoke and mirrors would have been more appropriate at the start. Why build a large deck carrier and put small deck aircraft on it? F35B fleet shared by FAA and RAF tossing a coin to see who gets to play with them this week. Inefficient TAG's that only the UK operate. All this can only make sense to politicians who have no idea what it takes to build and maintain effective armed forces.
Another useless report from DMR. They’re to fly off the Invincible class right........
Wtf is with that desperate intro music? X 😬
Bad idea, badly executed. About as much use as a chocolate teapot except, no one will admit it. A waste of valuable airframes. Just like the 2 65,000 tonne white elephant carriers, limited as to what they can carry. They should've been 3 off 30,000 tonne catobar ships with Hawkeye aerial surveillance aboard. Far More capability for less money. Way to go MOD !
