If you're doing a medium sized production, most would like to have more than one light. It seems to me like a combination of at least 1x 300D II and 1x 300x would be a nice combo. You can use the 300D as your key light in most situations and then use the 300x as your kicker, fill, bounce etc, which then also gives the option to have any of those positions be either warmer or cooler to give an added dimension. Or alternatively use the 300X for key when the light is coming from a "motivated source" or when there is an ambient source of light that you want to color match and use as a key.
Caleb and I are on the same wavelength right now! I was just about to get on aputure and ask the group what light(s) I should start with. Should of known Caleb would be right there! Whats tough for me is that I only have small lights (different aputure amaran series) and I'm looking to learn how to dive in a bit deeper. Maybe a 2020 update on "Everything you need to get started." (IE everything you have to/ should buy to go with your light ) light box, fresnel, spotlight, batteries, diffusion, gels, etc.) Thanks for your 10 years of service!
I got to say...this is the only review of that light that I completely watched. You have a way of making these reviews that is just really good. And the shots are beautiful!
So for interview type setups and balancing with dif scenarios, Do you with you got the 300d? or is the X good. in my head i'm thinking about the X as a key light, with bi-color i can balance with room light that is usually more orange/warmer. Have you used it on a 48" sofbox or at least a larger diffuser?
Looks killer. Love the bicolor feature on my Amaran AL-F7. Would certainly be nice to bring that to a bigger format. Hate to lose that output from the 300d though...
Thanks, Caleb. Great overview Only other thing I’d like to know is, if you typically keep the smallest light at 50%, how often are you really pushing the 300D II to it’s full brightness? I’m just trying to gauge which light is potentially more valuable: a crazy bright light in one color, or a light that’s bright enough that can do a range of color temps? IF you could only have one high light in your kit, which one would you choose?
I loved geralds and curtis Judd reviews but this was the best as what I really wanted to know is how it compares in output and CRI compared to the rest of the family ❤️ Thanks heaps!
Thanks for the great video! At 4:24 you mentioned that the 120D II had Sidus link. I was going to buy that light to accompany my 300D II but everything I've read tells me that the 120D II doesn't have Sidus link without some adapter that hasn't been released yet.
I think if anyone got the money and never buy video light before, the best combination will 2 lights 300D, I have 120D and i think if i want to get a brother to it it will be 300D since we as much powerful light as passable, and you can add color to you ligths if you need.
I have the 120d ii and original 300d. I’ve used the 300d ii, while thermally it is nicer, i would still argue that buying a used 300d i at almost half the price would be the best value. I didn’t notice much of a difference using both 300d versions side by side on camera. Losing that output with the 300x for every shoot is a big con considering diffusion and I rarely film in tungsten anyway (i just use gels and sacrifice output then).
What about the new Godox VL lights? If I am looking for first all around UA-cam key light, what should I get? Any of the Aputure or Godox or anything else?
I'd highly recommend watching Gerald undone's video he does on the godox. The tl;dw is that the godox beats the aperture lights in almost every category and at a much cheaper price.
I can tell, if you really need bright output, or you have to fight the sunlight out door, 300d ii is the best way to go, if you in door, most of time, and won't need such bright big set up, then 120d ii will do good job most of time, 300x will definantly do everything good indoor
awesome detailed review my 300x just got delivered !! definately didn’t need the 300D i think it would have been over kill for me in terms of power but we’ll see, this my first light ever. thanks again!
I'm interested in the 300d but the appeal for the 300x bicolor has me a bit hesitant. I'm wondering if I should just get the 300d for the output factor and just slap a gel on it when needed. What do you think would be a better investment if you could only get one? Also thank you for the incredibly informative video.
@@JayJay-xs4ij I wound up going with the 300d for the output factor. While the gel isn't terribly convenient I've used the brighter light more than the gel for what I do. Hope that helps!
@@jimzielinski I also saw in a video by James Powers that the 300dii with CTO is 1/2 stop brighter than the 300x at the same color temp (he said tungsten). Just a quick tip on the 120D, someone figured out a way to mount it using a quick-release system, much like the 300D ii. Look for 'FINALLY a Quick Release Mount for Aputure 120D II'. Pretty cheap and easy upgrade.

What you said makes total sense couldn't they have just released a 600x bi colour straight away...i feel like your gaining something with the 300x but loosing the benefits of it supposedly having more output than the 120d ...can't have everything in life

Great video, Caleb! I've been slowly putting together a small studio in my office/second bedroom to film some educational content of interest to me. I'm also potentially going to be filming stuff outdoors at a soccer field (or similar) to go with this content. Right now I've got several Aputure MC lights, the Aputure F7, and the Aputure MX. I'm looking to delve into getting a bigger single point light source and softbox (probably the Light Dome mini). The 300x caught my eye (due to your review and Gerald Undone's review). I'm curious if you think it'd be overkill for my purposes vs. getting a 120d mkii? The room is about 9' x 10' in size, with floor to ceiling windows on one side.
Great video Caleb! Would you be able to make an updated version of this video at some point? With everything that Aputure has released in the last few months like the Amaran line and the 60x, I need some guidance!
How do you think the 300X at either warm or cool extremes would perform in the bounce set-up you have at 7:36? Is is powerful enough for that set-up do you think?
Please Help. My 300x was working fine two days ago.Today it's not turning on neither on small rig batteries nor on direct power from outlet. The ballast doesn't show any blink. What could go wrong ? I had purchased it brand new and used very carefully.
Here in the Netherlands are all these types of lightes sold out and unable to deliver for weeks, they tell me at stores. I just decided to purchase one.
I would love to see a comparison in smaller more mobile lights, like the Aputure MC. I am looking for a light that I can take on a hike and than light my foreground or something like that.
If you were using this 300x unit for outdoor stand-ups (cheap HMI), wouldn't using the 2X fresnel attachment get back some of the output loss of the bi-color unit?
Caleb, fantastic video. Looking into these as well as the Godox offerings, as many others have mentioned. Hate to be that guy, but what camera did you shoot this on? Looks literally phenomenal paired with the Aputure lights. 🙌🏼
Good job explaining the advantages and disadvantages of all three lights. I have the 300D now. I was considering getting a second 300D, however I work in corporate video where there are a lot of office environments using daylight balanced light. The advantage of getting the 300X is that I can light my subjects using tungsten (while the ambient light is daylight) and as a result my subjects will stand out from the background. I thing getting a 300 X will provide me more options regardless of the ambient lighting that I encounter.
Great video, Caleb! Exactly what I wanted to see! Thanks also for all of my questions that you’ve been answering recently! I think my final Aputure question is: if I am buying my first Aputure light, and do not have any other accessories where this is an issue, does it matter whether I go with the gold mount or the V-mount battery option? Is one preferable if one has an open book to start with?
Doesn't matter :-) That said, Gold is more solid when mounting batteries, but V-mount is usually more affordable when it comes to batteries. Personally I go with V-mount for all of my gear. Finally, there are adapters to go back and forth between the two standards.
@@ArthurAlmassy V Mount is also the more common battery type worldwide, with Gold being preferred in certain areas, like Los Angeles and Toronto. So if you are in a plate that prefers gold mount, it might be better to get that one so you can source batteries in a pinch, and vice versa
Excellent work! After watching, I’m interested in purchasing 300x but I’m not sure which tripods to purchase with for my room. Can you please recommend one?
How would this compare to a bicolor panel like the Rotolight AEOS? Big fan of this light given its portability. Output and color quality specs seem similr.
The way the 300x is designed, a 120x doesn't look like it will be in the works, because of the lower output, since the 300x has to use another special bi-color LED chipset that's not COB in order to get the perfect blending. So at a pro level probably not, but maybe at a cheaper pro-sumer level
Imagine that you turned off all lights in a room (or it was extremely dim) and could only run 1 of these Aputure lights. Imagine your goal is to shoot slow motion so you record at 120fps with a shutter speed of 1/250. Let's say you set the aperture to f/3.5. To put in perspective the distance from the lens to the subject, imagine you're shooting a production commercial for cereal. Finally, suppose you have a 36" softbox with 2 layers of diffusion. Is the Aputure 120D ii strong enough to bring you all the way down to base ISO? (What I'm really trying to pinpoint is whether or not there is any advantage to using the Aputure 300D ii for slow-motion commercials instead of the Aputure 120D ii.)
Hello, to say that I write from Spain and my English is for translation. That's why I beg your pardon ... First of all, congratulations on your work. Thanks. Using your experience, knowing that currently the LED light has enough power to be able to take product photography, specifically glass bottles, at low ISO and high F. To perfectly illuminate a photograph of a bottle, a glass and a product, it could be achieved with 2 Aputure c300d with Projector with 19, 26 or 36 lens and an LS600d with a 2x fresnel. I can think of this Aputure material for this type of lighting, (there is a bottle and a glass, a lot of glass), do you consider it appropriate?
Hey just wanted to know what are the blankets your using hanging on the c stands called? The ones you’re using to bounce the light into the diffusion frame panel.
Mr. Caleb. What sound gear are you using for your UA-cam setup? I am not an audio guy /gal. Therefore I would welcome any tech advice in regards to capturing production-Sound on a non-narrative set.
I know you’re playing around with your setup. What lens do you have on your master shot? It has a kind of out-of-focus/vintage lens/anamorphic look in the areas outside the middle of the frame.
and what about batteries for the 300X (i need bi-color for architecture... ) ? from the aperture web site : Therefore, for best results, we recommend using batteries that are capable of continuously discharging 14-15 Amps, to provide adequate headroom for the power draw. so the D&O/Comer C90 A/S Supports up to a 10 Amp Continuous Draw... so not up to the task... any cheap and good recommendations ?
I think if you're shooting both daylight and tungsten, you can get close to the light intensity of the 300d. Using half of the lights (only daylight for example) is still a bit stronger than the 120d
Nice video thanks Kaleb. Aputure's naming choices are strange, power output wise the 300X is nothing close the the 300D II which I feel they try to replace with with their pricing strategy too.
Hi, Caleb great review of the Aputure lights. Would you consider doing a review of the Godox COB lights the FV150, VL300, VL150? I think a lot of subscribers are interested in the Godox lights because they seem to have a similar quality for a more affordable price tag. I would love to get your expert review before deciding which brand to invest in... Godox or Aputure?
Caleb Ive got a crazy question...I have yet to see anybody talking about this?? I ordered my Aputure 120d ii and received it the other day. In the picture it shows the Aputure Logo on the Bracket is a Red and Black Logo. However mine is all Silver? any reson behinds this??
Quick question: You showed the output at various color temperatures, which really helped me see your point that the 300x is more of a bi-color 120d. I currently use a 120d mark 1 and constantly need to gel it with full CTO. So, my question is, do you know how much of an output difference there would be between my setup (original 120d with full CTO) compared to the 300x adjusted to 3200? Thanks so much for the helpful videos!
Curtis Judd did a video comparing a gelled 300D II vs the bicolor 300x, and the 300D lost close to half the output with the gel. Either way, the 300x would be brighter than your original 120D
Hi Caleb, are these type/style of LED lights better than the flat panel LEDs like the Neewer 960 LED flat panels for weeding video? Also, which lights have the farthest distance? these round shape LEDs or the flat panels? Thanks again.
"The new Aputure LS 300x is a bi-color version of the Aputure LS 300d Mark II. ... The LS 300x is equally as bright as the 300d Mark II, which was already 20% brighter than the original 300d." ... so why does it say that it is less bright in this video?

Hello dear, I am buying the first flash for UA-cam and outdoor photography as you advise me
Will they be making a 120x version? Seems like a logical next product in the line
I think you answered that question for yourself.
Hey Caleb. Would love to hear from you comparison side by side between Aputure 300DII/120DII vs New Godox VL300/VL150. Hope you can release soon.
I always assumed aputures naming was based on light intensity. I guess they couldn't have charged as much for 120X.
Would you consider doing a comparison to the falcon eyes bi color light with this?
Hi, Caleb great review of the Aputure lights. Would you consider doing a review of the Godox COB lights the FV150, VL300, VL150? I think a lot of subscribers are interested in the Godox lights because they seem to have a similar quality for a more affordable price tag. I would love to get your expert review before deciding which brand to invest in... Godox or Aputure?
In terms of interviews with audio equipment, how quiet are these lights? any fan noise??
what is the white/black blanket you use as a bouncer in the setup at 4:56?
Thanks for the concise review. Reckon I've got to get rid of my old hot barndoor egg cookers now :)
Nice review, so sad that UA-cam's compression destroys your nice background with this color banding ..
Keep up the good work !
Stay safe
well done Caleb as always!
can you please link me the diffusion that u use at 4:56 ?
Thank you
What is your setup configuration when shooting this video, specifically your lighting and lens setup?
Caleb Ive got a crazy question...I have yet to see anybody talking about this??
I ordered my Aputure 120d ii and received it the other day. In the picture it shows the Aputure Logo on the Bracket is a Red and Black Logo.
However mine is all Silver? any reson behinds this??
I hope you can also make a review of the new 60d and 60x and the new bulb from aputure😁
I never knew Sidus link worked with the 120dii's
Quick question: You showed the output at various color temperatures, which really helped me see your point that the 300x is more of a bi-color 120d. I currently use a 120d mark 1 and constantly need to gel it with full CTO. So, my question is, do you know how much of an output difference there would be between my setup (original 120d with full CTO) compared to the 300x adjusted to 3200? Thanks so much for the helpful videos!
The 300x should be a stop brighter at least than your gelled 120d
Curtis Judd did a video comparing a gelled 300D II vs the bicolor 300x, and the 300D lost close to half the output with the gel. Either way, the 300x would be brighter than your original 120D
The 120d mk. ii actually isn't compatible with Sidus link :'( (also how come your videos are so dark now?)
But it will, be with the Sidus Link Bridge
Thanks for this review !
Hi Caleb, are these type/style of LED lights better than the flat panel LEDs like the Neewer 960 LED flat panels for weeding video?
Also, which lights have the farthest distance? these round shape LEDs or the flat panels?
Thanks again.
If you had to choose ONE aputure light to be a key light for UA-cam videos, which would it be?
whats the name of that morph transition @ 4:30
I'm wondering also ...
Now the question is does CTB on the 300D provide more or less output than the 300X
what light would you suggest for the wedding shoot
Does anyone know the brand / model of the light featured in the background?
The one with 6 light bulbs🙏🏾🙏🏾
He spoke about his background and props in a recent video
Jai ghatie you got the link to that?
Having trouble finding it
"The new Aputure LS 300x is a bi-color version of the Aputure LS 300d Mark II. ... The LS 300x is equally as bright as the 300d Mark II, which was already 20% brighter than the original 300d." ... so why does it say that it is less bright in this video?
Great review. I think I'll have them all, please!
does the 300D have the green color fringe problem that's on the 300x?
Would the 300x be able to compete with the sun for outside shooting?
Probably not. You need very powerful lights for that. With Nanlite having their sale, you can get the 500 for the same price
