      The sportsmanship makes sense for Kovalev even from a selfish perspective. He had a rare opportunity to face the most famous and talented chess player on the planet.
      If he managed to win, imagine his accomplishment being undercut by the notion that he only won due to a late start.

    • @craftycri
      @craftycri Рік тому +17

      @@paulybeefs8588 its not uncommon for players to allow tardiness of an opponent to penalize them, Spassky accepted a win from Fischer's failure to show. First Kovalev didn't start the clocks, on purpose, and wouldn't have but for the Official, then clearly runs off the time to make the play fair. IMO, if a fair viewing of the elements shows honorable action, good sportsmanship, a refusal to take advantage of another even if it's legal, THAT is the only fair conclusion to hold.

    I don't think it was a show of confidence when Magnus took a few seconds to adjust his pieces. It was code for "I see what you are doing with the clock, brother, and from here on we can continue with the time we have. You have my gratitude for creating an even playing field."
    In other words, he said thanks.

    Oh he absolutely was wasting time on purpose. He's a strong grandmaster, he already knows that opening theory. This is like the opening book moves of a chess program, they don't even think on those moves, they know them and play them automatically that early, even for human players. This is his objection to the arbiter starting the match when Magnus wasn't there. He wasted two minutes on his clock to make it a more standard match with no out-of-game factors giving one player a handicap. How many times in your life do you get to face Carlsen, the world champion, in a rated tournament game? Handicapping him literally wastes one of those few precious times you can actually fairly match wits with him when something is actually on the line for him.
    To not waste time on the clock is to deny yourself a golden opportunity to test your mettle against the absolute best.

    2:00 this is not true. Atleast there are indications magnus did things in this match he doesn’t normally do. After these moments, magnus will find ways to waste time such as adjust his own pieces needlessly multiple times. After one such occasions, Kovalev looks up at him to make sure he’s understanding which is essentially “thank for the gesture but I don’t need you to waste your time”. This has happened to magnus albeit as a child. Kasparov showed up slightly late to their match when magnus was 13. He showed no such “sportsmanship”. Victory is victory. Circumstances aside. Judging by what we’ve heard of magnus in terms of interviews, it stands to reason he might even be offended by the notion he’s owed time back through wasting by the opponent. For the sole reason look at how many comments discount the win bc of it. That’s exactly why.

      @@Yellowmankey hey, thank you yellowmankey. I was thinking it was something like that. I had never played chess in my life until a few months ago so I'm really just starting out. It's really just amazed me that there's infinite moves and solutions or just so many. I never realized it was such a complicated and intellectual game. Glad I found it now though. I really enjoy it. Haven't won a match yet but I will get there.

      @@egroegartfart it's an increment, it's not always the case that the players get extra time when pressing the clock, the world championship, for example, requires the players to reach a set ammount of moves in order to obtain extra time, and then no further incriment.

    the good thing about chess is, having more time doesn't change anything if you're not better

    So I'm guessing that when the timer goes down to seven seconds if you stop it within 7 because your turn is over and then you start your next turn it resets to seven seconds to get additional time
