    Our walk starts at the top of Causewayhead, we walk down to The Greenmarket. Then explore Chapel Street where we see the beautiful Egyptian House and take a look at the Admiral Benbow pub. We then retrace our steps back to The Market House and walk down Market Jew Street, Albert Street and Wharf Road. Our walk finishes by Penzance Harbour with views across to the Scillonian III passenger ferry.

    Penzance is a town, civil parish and port in the Penwith district of Cornwall, United Kingdom. It is the most westerly major town in Cornwall and is about 64 miles west-southwest of Plymouth and 255 miles west-southwest of London. Situated in the shelter of Mount's Bay, the town faces south-east onto the English Channel, is bordered to the west by the fishing port of Newlyn.
    Penzance's former main street Chapel Street has a number of interesting features, including the Egyptian House, the Union Hotel (including a Georgian theatre which is no longer in use) and Branwell House, where the mother and aunt of the famous Brontë sisters once lived. Regency, and Georgian terraces and houses are common in some parts of the town. The nearby sub-tropical Morrab Gardens has a large collection of tender trees and shrubs, many of which cannot be grown outdoors anywhere else in the UK. Also of interest is the seafront with its promenade and the open-air seawater Jubilee Bathing Pool (one of the oldest surviving Art Deco swimming baths in the country) built during Penzance's heyday as a fashionable seaside resort. It opened in 1935, the year of King George V's Silver Jubilee.
    Penzance is the base of the pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance. At the time the libretto was written, 1879, Penzance had become popular as a peaceful resort town, so the idea of it being overrun by pirates was amusing to contemporaries.
    The Scillonian III Passenger Ferry sails from Penzance harbour to St Mary's, the largest island in the Isles of Scilly.
    The Egyptian House is a grade I listed building in the Cornish town of Penzance. It is built in the style of Egyptian Revival architecture and has been in the ownership of the Landmark Trust since the 1970s. The current building dates from 1835-36. The building is at 6-7 Chapel Street, Penzance.
    Penzance was the birthplace of the chemist Sir Humphry Davy. He is best known as the inventor of the Miner's Safety Lamp, or Davy lamp. There is a statue of Davy at the top of Market Jew Street, near the house in which he was born.
    The Market House and Old Town Hall (1836-38) in Market Jew Street was designed by William Harris, District Surveyor for Bristol, in the Greek Revival style. It has a grand Ionic portico and is surmounted by a dome. Alterations for Lloyds Bank were carried out in 1922-25.

    Been there as an exchange student from Germany in 1995 and 1996 for about six weeks each. These tiny mossy houses, the tropical weather, especially in summer. The lovely teachers and my host parents. Making friends, enjoying life. Played "Laser Quasar" near the harbour and billards with an one-armed veteran of WWII, who used to call us "Krauts" or even "fucking Krauts". I'am still in love with all of it. Thank you for the video!

    Thanks for this. I miss Penzance and even though I couldn't get home this year, your video helps. Only thing I would suggest would be to have a local lay out a route so that you aren't turning around so much. For example when you were in Greenmarket 4:21 you could have turned left and gone through the subtropical Morrab Gardens turned left on Morrab Road down to the newly renovated promenade which you bypassed completely.

      @TVJourneys  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching, i'm glad the video has helped. Thanks for the suggestions too. I definitely want to go back and film more walks around Penzance and will try and include Morrab gardens next time and the new promenade.

    Where are all the people gone??? This is my home town for over 10 years I left Cornwall in 2015. Similar I noticed with St. Ives in yesterday's 'Storm Eunice' some made here for yt. I remember both towns busy with people in my days!!! This ain't RAPTURE prior Global Nuclear War emergency evacuation - is it??? Never seen the streets so vacated as now, all the old people, mums with prams + tourists gone - while the houses look all nicely made up!!! I remember it more delapidated...in particular 'THE SAVOY CINEMA' on CAUSEWAY HEAD is really nicely made upb all in BLUE - do they still have the BARGAIN SHOWS with free popcorn for 2.50 Pds at Noon on Saturdays??? Tyvm for this video, it makes me homesick. STAY SAFE + LONG LIVE + PROSPER!!!!

    • @daggihohlweg7540
      @daggihohlweg7540 2 роки тому +1

      Omg - 'THE GLOBE' pub is amazing. Adjacent to that, at the Coop, I once had quickly sneaked out from Bread Street to buy myself a couple of Kilkennies when I had earned green armour at Runescaoe. Fond memories of bygone days not long ago when Penzance had just gotten FAST FIBERBAND BROADBAND from EU funding, as a mum with home education for my junior we had TIME for online RPG games. The locals timid + going to overly time consuming dragonic state schools for limbectomies + poor election choices had no such luxuries to raise their children for 21st century as I did with my Luke....hmmmm...fond memories in my private life also thx to a vibrant Pz home education group that mostly came from tourists settling raising their kids more protected + private initiatives. Tyvm again, beautiful flags for Galowan, again I find the city really been like emptied of its people! ?this being a supernatural mystery? As too this is one of the latest yt vides first hit already 8 months old when I searched just now for 'Penzance', kinda odd imho...🕵🕵🕵🕵🕵 No storm Eunice videos from tourust stirm chasers from Penzance (yet)???? I had from Bread Street a windiw view straight onto St. Michael's Mt + from the pier's harbour lighthouse I saw waves in autumnal storms larger than the lighthouse!!!! So no storm videos from Pz (yet). Let's check out the harbours life webcam....

    It took a few hundred years for Penzance to establish itself but only 40+ years for town planners to utterly destroy a once vibrant town.
    Looking at all the vacant shops bears testimony to the truthfulness of my opinion, and many viewers 60 years and older will be dejected at seeing this footage. There's a YT video "Penzance 1964" online, plus a comparison between '1964 and 2019'. Penzance once had a 'beating heart' but not even a 'transplant' is going to save her now. Visitors will say that the place still has a wonderful ambience but they don't realise the losses that Penzance has suffered. I choose to remember the town of my childhood replete with shop names such as Lennards, Trueform, Burtons, Hepworths, Trevails, Wimpy, Tregenzas, Whites of Alverton, James' Music Shop, Knees Toy shop, Samuels the Jewellers, Peasgoods (near Davy), Timothy Whites, Marchants, Trezizes Hair dressers, Parkers, Blewett and Penders, Lanxon's Sports Shop, Panache, Home and Colonial, Dingles, Liptons, Jacobs, Bailey and Harvey et al. What the hell happened?

    Pity you missed out on the large plaque in Chapel Street for the Admiral Nelson's bar (the real deal in remembrance to him, Trafalgar Battle against Spanish Armada + out of my memory this was the pub they carried into his body to lay out on a table + proof he really had died in that Sea battle pls add the year + historic details to my account) where you kindly stood at 9:28 min to give us a good view onto the Egyptian House which I found in most times strangely closed, just behind you on your side of the street on the left pavement you accidentally capture a tiny snippet of it when you turned your view to the right - the two close together the human oversight of Nelson's Bar can easily happen. All three, Nelson's + Turk's head & Admiral Benbow with the Pirate on the lookout on the roof top are quite historic SMUGGLER INNS, to be put under World Heritage + World Monument Fund imho. Tyvm for making such a historic town walk - i met tourists who regularly returned for Pz just for the Galowan Season. Maybe you return in 2022 for a tour inside these pubs??? 😇😇😇😇😇😘😘😘😘😘👠👠👠👠👠💖💖💖💖💖

    Wasn’t made there unlike my offspring, but I was made there, in the ovens of the Cornish. Cornish is a question of attitude. I’d live and die for Cornwall.Anybody want to Argue.
